How to Make Homemade Banana Pudding

You'll find a detailed ingredient list and step-by-step instructions in the recipe below, but let's go over the basics:

Homemade Banana Pudding Ingredients

These are the ingredients you’ll need to make this homemade banana pudding recipe from scratch:

  • Sugar: This homemade banana pudding recipe starts with ⅔ cup white sugar.
  • Flour: All-purpose flour helps thicken the custard.
  • Salt: A pinch of salt enhances the flavor, but it won’t make the dessert taste salty.
  • Eggs: Three beaten eggs add moisture and act as a binder.
  • Milk: Use two cups of milk or your favorite milk alternative.
  • Butter: Butter lends richness and decadent flavor.
  • Vanilla: Vanilla extract takes the flavor up a notch.
  • Bananas: You’ll need two peeled and sliced bananas.
  • Cookies: The banana pudding wouldn’t be complete without vanilla wafer cookies.

How Do You Make Banana Pudding at Home?

Make the pudding on the stove, layer the pudding with the bananas and cookies, and chill the dessert before serving. That’s all there is to it! Find the full, step-by-step recipe for homemade banana pudding below.

Can You Make Homemade Banana Pudding Ahead of Time?

Yes! You can make banana pudding up to three days in advance. Simply assemble the dessert and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It’s served chilled, so you can just pop it out of the fridge whenever you’re ready.

“What a great recipe,” according to karen8817. “I only used the yolks and saved the whites for meringue. I also used half-and-half instead of milk. Thick and smooth!”

“Delicious,” raves Candace Peterson. “The second time I made it, I added ½ cups of semisweet chocolate chips. Really good for those chocolate lovers. I'm keeping this recipe!!!”

“This was an excellent recipe,” says Patty Lee. “Instead of using the store-bought vanilla wafers, I used this recipe and made my own. It turned out great.”
