What Is Banoffee Pie?

Banoffee pie is a British dessert made with banana slices, whipped cream, and a caramel sauce. The original recipe, created in 1971, is attributed to the owner and chef of Hungry Monk Restaurant in Sussex. Its name is a combination of the words “banana” and “toffee.”

Banoffee Pie Ingredients

These are the ingredients you’ll need to make a British banoffee pie recipe:

  • Dulce de leche: Use canned dulce de leche or make your own at home.
  • Graham cracker crumbs: The simple crust starts with graham cracker crumbs.
  • Sugars: You’ll need white sugar for the crust and powdered sugar for the whipped cream.
  • Ginger: Ground ginger is optional, but it adds depth to the graham cracker crust.
  • Butter: Melted butter lends moisture and helps hold the crust together.
  • Bananas: Banana slices are key to a traditional banoffee pie.
  • Heavy cream: Use heavy cream to make homemade whipped cream.
  • Garnishes: Finish the banoffee pie with chocolate shavings and espresso powder.

How to Make Banoffee Pie

  1. Make the crust, press it into the pie pan, and bake until set.
  2. Arrange the dulce de leche and banana slices on top of the cooled crust.
  3. Make the whipped cream and spread it over the bananas.
  4. Chill the pie and garnish before serving.

Test Kitchen Tips

The recipe was tested in our test kitchen — here are some tips from culinary experts:

  • Adding ginger in the crust makes a nice flavor addition if you are making this for Christmas dessert.
  • The crust can be made ahead and stored, covered, for up to 2 days.

How to Store Banoffee Pie

Cover the pie and store it in the refrigerator for up to five days.

Can You Freeze Banoffee Pie?

We don’t recommend freezing banoffee pie because it likely will not thaw well. However, if you’d like to keep it for more than five days, you can freeze it for up to three months.

“Absolutely FABULOUS,” raves JennyM. “Great texture and flavor. The family LOVED it!!!”

"Made baby portions in ramekins [instead of in a pie crust] and it turned out fantastic,” says Paddy O'Dea. “Substituted Hobnobs instead of graham crackers. I'm now asked at every dinner party if I can make mini banoffees.”

“This is so simple to make and delicious,” according to wbalelo. “I thought it would be too sweet, but the plain whipped cream on top actually helps to balance it out. Because of that, I do not recommend using Cool Whip or any other pre-made whipped topping.”
