Title: Writer

Julie Laing has been a writer and editor for more than 25 years, much of that span as a freelancer. Since 2016, her writing has focused on original recipes, the tools used to make them, and the stories around them. Julie is the author of “The Complete Guide to Pickling” (Rockridge Press, 2020). She writes a weekly food column, named "Twice as Tasty" after her personal food blog, for the Flathead Beacon, in addition to contributing to other national websites and publications. An avid gardener, home canner, fermenter, and baker, Julie focuses on products and gadgets that help when growing, preserving, and cooking from scratch at home.

Experience

Julie’s 25-plus years as a writer and editor have taken her around the world, and since 2003, she has freelanced from her home in Bigfork, Montana. Julie is the author of “The Complete Guide to Pickling” (Rockridge Press, 2020), “The Pickled Picnic,” and TwiceAsTasty.com, a food blog focused on eating well year-round. She writes the weekly Twice as Tasty food column for the Flathead Beacon and regularly contributes to websites and publications like The Spruce Eats, Taste of Home, Kitchn, “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” website, and Clean Plates. She has also been featured and shared her expertise online and in print, including in “The Telegraph” (UK), Insider, Cookbook Love Podcast, and “Waggoner Cruising Guide.”

Julie also teaches cooking workshops and prepares food as a personal chef. Each year, she and her husband, George, fill every spare space in their 500-square-foot cabin with homegrown and home-preserved food. When they’re not at home, Julie and George are most likely skiing in Montana’s stunning mountains or sailing aboard the “Blue Mule.” Their lifestyle makes Julie a fan of products that can help her preserve homegrown produce, from deep freezers to fermentation crocks, and of tools that can be used at home, in the sailboat galley, or at a shoreside picnic, from knives to grill mats.

Education

Julie received a bachelor’s degree in English with journalism emphasis from Chapman University.
