Allrecipes' editorial guidelines Published on April 19, 2023 In our eyes, Jennifer Garner can do no wrong. From her goofy, ingenious hacks to her unending love for Ina Garten to her endearing "Pretend Cooking Show" on Instagram (where she's made one of our recipes, by the way). That's why we couldn't help but tune in to her Food Diary video on Harper's BAZAAR's YouTube. The video has many charming takeaways including how she gets fixated on one breakfast and will eat it every day for years (relatable), how she's been known to eat a pack of Once Upon a Farm—the baby and toddler food company she co-owns—for breakfast on the go (she is technically above 6 months old!), and even her favorite Barefoot Contessa recipes (the famous roast chicken-duh!) But it was one of her favorite snacks that really caught our attention for its ease and simplicity. In the video, Garner confesses, "I do have a big sweet tooth and I also have a big salty tooth. I have a big everything tooth." But there's one thing that satisfies her sweet tooth so much so that Garner says she can't keep it in her house because she, "can’t resist:" chocolate 'magic' shell on ice cream. Jennifer Garner/Instagram/Allrecipes Jennifer says she recently learned how to make homemade magic shell and she "can't handle it," around the stuff ever since. "If it's in my house, I'm having a bowl of ice cream with magic shell," she reveals. If you're not familiar, magic chocolate shell is named as such because it magically hardens in seconds upon contact with ice cream. It's also magic because it typically has just two ingredients. As we're finally getting into the warmer weather months, we can't see a better snack to have stocked in the house, even if it is irresistible. Here's how to make it homemade magic shell in just a matter of minutes. Holiday Baker How to Make Jennifer Garner's Favorite Sweet Snack To make homemade chocolate shell, you can follow this recipe from Allrecipes community member, Fervent Frugal Foodie. It's got two ingredients, takes less than five ingredients, and can be made right in your microwave in one bowl—no mess and no clean up! Chocolate shell is made by simply combining 3 parts chocolate to 1 part coconut oil. This recipe calls for semisweet chocolate chips, but as Jennifer Garner notes in her food diary, the best part is it's customizable to your taste. "When you make it yourself you can titrate how much milk chocolate you want versus dark chocolate," she says. As the recipe author states, you can use any neutral oil to make this recipe, but we found coconut oil adds a slight nutty taste and yields in the best crunchy texture once hardened. If you don't like the taste of coconut, be sure to opt for refined coconut oil which will have a milder flavor. It's also noted that you can add slightly more oil for a thinner, crispier shell, or add slightly less for a thicker shell. Once you have your preferred chocolate and oil in a microwave-safe bowl, microwave them in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until the chocolate is melted and it has a smooth, uniform texture. When you're ready to eat, simply pour the chocolate shell over the freshly scooped ice cream of your choice. Watch as it magically hardens in seconds, evoking your favorite nostalgic chocolate-coated ice cream truck treats. Jenn—we're with you on this one! Was this page helpful? Thanks for your feedback!
