Photo: Allrecipes / Kristin Kempa When my family stayed at a hotel recently, I was so relieved to see a Keurig sitting on the counter. I may have been in a new place, but I knew exactly how to use the coffee maker, and this is where Keurig shines. Not only are Keurig machines incredibly user-friendly, but I also don’t have to guess how much coffee needs to be made, everyone can drink as much, or as little, as they want. Of course, Keurig has moved beyond the basics. I like all the useful features, such as temperature control and brew strength. I crave iced drinks during warmer months and the “over ice” button makes preparing a refreshing drink especially easy. The Cafe series includes a milk frother for making specialty drinks as well as a button to brew a 2-ounce shot. With so many features to choose from, we talked to our Allstars to find out which Keurig machines they can’t live without. It could be a little quieter, but I’d rather have slightly noisy than slightly messy!” The sleek K-Elite offers many options for your household. First, there’s a wide variety of cup sizes: 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 ounces. Once you choose your cup size, you can choose how strong the coffee is brewed as well as the temperature. You’re not limited to just hot coffee—you can also brew iced beverages, and we love the extra hot-water button, which is useful for making morning oatmeal. The K-Elite’s large water reservoir holds 75 ounces, or about 8 cups, and is easy to fill, but you can’t see it from the front of the machine and there isn’t an “add water” alert. The drip tray, drip tray lid, and pod holder are all removable and can be rinsed in warm, soapy water. The K-Elite does alert you when it’s time to descale the machine, which makes deep cleaning a breeze. The Details: 75-ounce water reservoir; 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12-ounce cup size; 9.9 x 13.1 x 12.7 inches Best Budget Keurig K-Mini Coffee Maker PHOTO: Amazon $100 $49 at Amazon $90 $60 at Target $89 $61 at Walmart Why It’s Great: Petite size; can fit travel mugs; auto-offGrain of Salt: Only the Plus has a removable water reservoir I love how easy it is to use the K-Mini. Just fill your cup with water, add it to the machine, pop in a pod, and press start. That ease is why Allstar Kristen Flowers recommends it! “I love it,” she says. “Fast coffee, much cheaper than Starbucks every morning!” Fast is an understatement. The K-Mini brews up to 12 ounces within three minutes. And while Kristen wishes it was even more compact, you can’t beat the K-Mini’s 5-inch width (and yes, it will fit your 7-inch-tall travel mug). Its small size makes it a go-to choice for taking on trips, sitting on your desk, or stored in a cabinet if you don’t need it every day. This machine has an auto-off after 90 seconds, so there’s no worrying about whether the coffee pot is off when you leave the house. This is also compatible with the K-Cup Universal Reusable Coffee Filter so you can use your own grounds if you prefer. One thing to keep in mind is that, despite its small size, it’s not the quietest machine and seems especially noisy at the end of the brewing cycle. There’s also the K-Mini Plus, which includes storage for nine pods, a removable water reservoir, and a brew strength option. Either model has a removable drip tray and should be descaled every three to six months. The Details: 12-ounce water reservoir; 6 to 12-ounce cup size; 4.5 x 11.3 x 12.1 inches Best for Families Keurig K155 OfficePro Premier Brewing System PHOTO: Amazon $295 at Amazon $20 at Walmart View on Keurig.com Why It’s Great: Large water reservoir; touchscreen display; quickly brews consecutive cups; dishwasher-safe partsGrain of Salt: No brew strength feature While it’s technically for commercial use, Allstar Crista Black recommends the Keurig K155 as an excellent choice for a family, as well as for all of us working from home. “I prefer the commercial ones for home use, they last longer,” says Crista. We also like that the large 90-ounce removable reservoir can make up to 18 cups of coffee. Everyone can brew their perfect cup via the touch screen display, which shows a picture along with the number of ounces, helping you pick the right size every time. Though you have options on sizing and temperature, there isn’t an option to pick the strength of the coffee. After the initial warm-up period, each cup takes about a minute to brew, but we think the real charm comes in the fact that it is ready within 15 seconds to brew another cup. The K-Cup holder and the funnel are dishwasher-safe, but the water reservoir should be hand-washed. The machine should be descaled every three to six months, which you’ll need to keep track of on your own. The Details: 90-ounce water reservoir; 4, 6, 8, and 10-ounce cup size; 10.38 x 14 x 13.8 inches Best for Lattes Keurig Single-Serve K-Cup Coffee Maker PHOTO: Amazon $188 at Amazon $225 at Walmart $200 at Wayfair Why It’s Great: Can froth milk and brew coffee at the same time; can froth milk cold or hot; espresso shot optionGrain of Salt: No temperature control Allstar Jane Willcox fuels her love of coffeehouse coffee with the Keurig K-Cafe. One of the highlights for Jane is the 2-ounce shot for lattes and cappuccinos (in addition to your regular cup sizes). While you’re not able to adjust the temperature of the coffee, you can adjust the brew strength. The K-Cafe stands out because it can brew the coffee at the same time that it froths milk. “The frother is AMAZING!” says Jane. “I use it for everything from whipped cream to a nice froth for coffee. I’m my own barista!” The milk frother works at the touch of a button and has two fill lines for either a cappuccino or a latte. The frother can heat milk for hot drinks, or you can select the “cold” button to keep the milk cold before adding it to an iced drink. It beeps twice when done, eliminating guesswork, and creates a thick foam each and every time. This frother is also dishwasher safe, while other Keurig frothers are not. It also boasts a large removable water reservoir, as well as a removable drip tray, and Jane attests that everything is easy to clean. The Details: 60-ounce water reservoir; 6, 8, 10, and 12-ounce cup size plus a 2-ounce shot option; 15.25 x 11.75 x 12.5 inches The Best Cappuccino Machines to Start Your Morning Off Right Most Customizable Keurig K-Supreme Plus PHOTO: Amazon $220 $208 at Amazon $219 $187 at Walmart $220 at Wayfair Why It’s Great: Three temperature and three brew settings; programmable settings for up to three people; MultiStream technologyGrain of Salt: Need to remove drip tray to fit tall travel mugs Customization is king in the Keurig K-Supreme Plus, and that’s why Allstar Sarah Stone strongly recommends it. It offers three temperature and brew strength options, plus the ability to save up to three different settings so you don’t have to push the same three buttons every morning. The MultiStream Technology brews a full-flavored cup regardless of the brew strength chosen. For warmer months, there is an “over ice” setting, an option that Sarah loves. The stainless steel exterior, stamped metal logo, and metal handle elevate the appearance of the machine. Lights on the top of the machine alert you when more water is needed in the 78-ounce reservoir, as well as when it’s time to descale. This boasts one of the wider ranges of cup sizes: 4 to 12 ounces. With a 12-ounce option as well as an over-ice option, we wish it could accommodate taller cups without removing the drip tray. Though similar to the K-Supreme, the Plus version has more customizable features, if you’re trying to decide between the two. The Details: 78-ounce water reservoir; 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12-ounce cup size; 8.3 x 13.3 x 12.2 inches Our Allstars Love Single-Serve Coffee Machines—Here Are Their Favorites Best Basic Keurig K-Select Coffee Maker PHOTO: Walmart $150 $120 at Amazon $140 $94 at Walmart $120 at Wayfair Why It’s Great: Strong brew option; drip tray is dishwasher-safe; automatically shuts offGrain of Salt: Need to manually track whether the machine needs descaled The K-Select is a well-loved Keurig among our Allstars, with both Jennifer Aleman and Lisa Lynn Backus having one in their kitchens. It has all the features you need at the touch of a button so even the most exhausted among us can use the machine without missing a beat. Even though it’s on the basic side, this does have a strong brew option, a helpful feature that slows down the brewing time to extract a more robust flavor from the pod. It’s also still versatile enough that Jennifer uses it for other hot drinks, and likes that she doesn’t have to brew a whole pot of coffee just to make a dessert or marinade. Another great feature is the power-saving auto-off feature, which turns the machine off two hours after the last brew. Regular descaling is recommended for optimal performance, though the K-Select does not alert you when the machine needs descaled. The Keurig K-Classic, which Allstars Kelsey Riley and Brenda Venable recommend, has similar features and is another great option for a basic Keurig. The Details: 52-ounce water reservoir; 6, 8, 10, and 12-ounce cup size; 9.2 x 11.6 x 12.5 inches Best with Carafes Keurig K-Duo Plus Coffee Maker PHOTO: Amazon $230 $150 at Amazon $230 $199 at Walmart $200 at Wayfair Why It’s Great: Stainless-steel thermal carafe; eight different brew sizes; pause and pourGrain of Salt: No carafe storage The K-Duo Plus allows you to make a full carafe of coffee or brew a single K-cup while keeping the same user-friendly design. It comes with a stainless-steel thermal carafe that holds up to 12 cups (60 ounces) of coffee and will keep the coffee hot without needing to use a warming plate (and risk burning the coffee). Unlike most Keurigs, you will need ground coffee, not K-cups, when using the carafe, and it does have a pause-and-pour feature when you remove the carafe mid-brew. Both the single-cup and carafe methods offer four size options, so you’ll always brew the right amount. The K-Duo Plus is also programmable, has a clock, and a strong brew setting. If you won’t be using the carafe very often, it can be stored in a cupboard, but we do wish there was a spot to put the carafe when not in use. The Details: 60-ounce water reservoir; 6, 8, 10 and 12-ounce cup sizes and 6, 8, 10 and 12-cup carafe; 8.2 x 11.7 x 14.19 inches Our Takeaway Keurig offers multiple models with a variety of features, but we love the Keurig K-Elite Single-Serve Coffee Maker for its wide range of cup size options, brew strength, and temperature settings. We also like the large, removable reservoir, and the hot water button. How to Pick the Right Keurig Coffee Maker Features Each Keurig has a unique combination of features so it’s important to know what’s the most important ones for you. When it comes to brewing there’s MultiStream Technology, which uses five needles to puncture the K-Pod. Water saturates the coffee grounds more fully to extract the most flavor from the pod, but without slowing the brewing time down as the “strong brew” option does. Meanwhile, the SMART machines have BrewID, where the machine recognizes the pod and customizes the brew settings to achieve the best results. They’re able to connect to Wi-Fi so you can control the machine with an app. Other features include an “over ice” button that brews six ounces of coffee at a cooler temperature than the standard option. It starts the brew on hot water and then switches to cool water to minimize the ice from melting. The Keurig Cafe machines allow you to make specialty drinks, such as cappuccinos and lattes. They include a “shot” button and an electric milk frother. Lastly, the K-Duo and K-Duo Plus brew both carafes and single cups, ensuring that you never run out of coffee. Other helpful features available on some machines are alerts when the machine needs descaling or when water needs to be added, and having temperature control or multiple temperature options. Cups or Carafes? If you want to be able to brew both a single cup and a carafe, then look for the K-Duo and K-Duo Plus. These models use ground coffee and a traditional filter for brewing carafes. It is also possible to buy reusable pods, which would allow you to use your own coffee grounds for both the single cup and the carafe. In the past, Keurig had machines that brew larger pods called K-Carafe, but those are no longer in production. While every model brews 6, 8, and 10-ounce cups, some models brew 4 and 12-ounce cups as well. The Cafe models have a “shot” button that brews 2-ounce shots for specialty drinks. Other models offer an “over ice” button that brews six ounces at a cooler temperature that is meant to be brewed into an ice-filled cup. Care Just like with any other coffee maker, caring for your Keurig machine is an important part of ensuring optimal performance. Every model has a removable drip tray and lid that needs to be emptied and washed weekly, if not daily. It’s also important to empty and clean the water reservoir weekly. Some models have dishwasher-safe drip trays and water reservoirs so check be sure to check the manual. You’ll also find instructions on how to descale your machine in the manual. Keurig sells a descaling kit and rinse pods to make this process as easy as possible. Every machine should be descaled between three and six months. Some models will alert you when the machine needs descaling and other machines rely on the owner to keep track. The PHA (the part that holds the pod) also needs to be cleaned from time to time. We recommend cleaning this, as well as changing your water filter if applicable, at the same time that you’re descaling. If your machine is going to be in storage or unused for more than a week, make sure to drain the water reservoir and the internal tank. Before using it again you’ll want to run a rinse pod through it. One more area to keep in mind is flavor carry-over. Plan on running a rinse pod through your machine weekly, as well as after each time a flavored coffee or hot cocoa pod is used. How to Clean a Keurig So It Will Run as Good as New Common Questions Is it okay to leave water in your Keurig all the time? No, the water reservoir should be washed with warm, soapy water and thoroughly rinsed weekly. Towel dry the outside of the reservoir and lid, and let the inside air dry since drying the inside with a cloth can leave lint behind. Should you use distilled water in your Keurig? No, you don’t want to use distilled water in your Keurig. Distilled water has a high concentration of minerals that can affect the taste of the brewed coffee. These minerals can also be deposited inside the machine and cause the machine to underperform. Tap water, filtered water, and spring water are all good choices for the Keurig. Some machines have water filters inside the tank, which is a good option when using tap water. Are K-Cups the same as coffee pods? No, typically coffee pods are round and flat, and use filter paper whereas K-cups are specifically designed to be used in the Keurig. K-cups are made of plastic with the coffee grounds inside a cup-like container. The container is covered in foil that the machine punctures to brew the coffee. These specially made K-cups are available through multiple different coffee brands (I’m partial to Starbucks Dark Roast K-Pods). Why Take Our Word For It?
