Anne Hathaway's 2-Second Dessert Hack Is Pure Genius

It's a certified party-stopper.

In case you haven’t caught it yet, "The Idea of You" is the new romance film that already has fans begging for a sequel, with the brilliant Anne Hathaway starring as the leading lady. And, as we watched her perfectly portray the nuanced struggles of a woman navigating an age-gap relationship, we were reminded of one of Hathaway’s other exceptional talents: dessert

Hathaway is a self-proclaimed dessert expert. When Stephen Colbert asked the actress on the stage of his talk show, “Are you a good dessert orderer?” she responded with an iconic, “No, I’m great.”

“I crush ordering dessert,” she admits. “You know how they say you have to put in 10,000 hours to be great at something? Yeah, I have blown past that. I have put in so many hours at dessert.”

And how do we know she’s not overselling her skills? Because not too long ago, Hathaway shared a dessert hack that took the internet by storm—and stopped an entire party.

Anne Hathaway’s Brilliant Cupcake Hack

Not only is Anne Hathaway skilled at ordering dessert, she’s also skilled at eating it. On an episode of "The Kelly Clarkson Show," Hathaway mystified the audience with her “special way” of eating a cupcake that really channels the Princess of Genovia.

"I didn't realize that this was that unusual until I was at my friend Steph's 40th birthday and it got 'Omicron-ed,' so we couldn't have a cake, so we did cupcakes," Hathaway explained to Clarkson. "So I took my cupcake and I did this thing and it stopped the party."

So, what’s the "thing" that brought the party to a halt? She carefully tears the bottom portion of the cupcake off and sticks it on top of the frosting, transforming the cupcake into a neat little cake sandwich right before your eyes. No mess, no icing-covered noses, and the perfect frosting-to-cake ratio in every bite.

It’s almost like eating a whoopie pie, Clarkson points out, and it makes snacking on an average cupcake even more fun. Plus, it's much more practical than another viral dessert hack—the wine glass-cutting cake trend of 2021.

"And then it feels more casual,” Hathaway adds, “more like an hors d'oeuvre, which, I just want to make all desserts more casual so we can eat more of them." We don’t know about you, but we think she could run for office on that platform.

As summer rolls in, we know we’ll be taking Hathaway’s tip with us through the cupcakes of birthday parties, graduation celebrations, and Memorial Day picnics, hopefully stopping the party every time. It’s not "playing with your food" if Anne Hathaway does it—after all, she’s the expert.
