Historiography

What follows is an annotated syllabus for "Graduate Historical Methodology" at UNO, which is not a "methods" class so much as it is a survey of historiographic theory and approaches to the writing of history in the Western historical tradition. This is my "fifty-page syllabus" for the course, which I give to students. It is so lengthy because I decided to write out introductory comments for each of the 103 reading assignments listed on the syllabus. I thought that doing so would be preferable than just giving the class a list of unfamiliar readings for each week and letting them try to guess why I was grouping those readings together. For the purposes of the web-posting here, it also provides a justification for the inclusion of specific readings, which might be of interest to those looking at this syllabus with the goal of comparing it to some other actual or potential course.

Вступ. Імперська спадщина в сучасній Україні є предметом суспільної уваги, набагато ширшої ніж коли-небудь вона мала в українському академічному дискурсі. У націоцентричному наративі, який домінував у 1990-х-2000-х рр. «довге XIX ст.» було затавроване як «втрачений час» бездержавності, де українські землі стали жертвою хижих імперій. Голос Ярослава Грицака, який закликав до «нормалізації» української історії й уваги до надважливої доби змінформування модерного суспільства, лишався майже не чутним на той час (Грицак, 2000, 2011). У 2010-х рр. підхід проблематизувався, через поступове наближення українських науковців до західного академічного поля, запозичення усталених в ньому підходів (Гундорова, 2013). На початку 2020-х рр., пов'язаний із повномасштабною російсько-українською війною, виклик нової хвилі деколонізації вийшов далеко за межі української академії. Під час круглого столу, який відбувся у січні 2023 р. в Чернівця (Бемпорад, 2023), американська дослідниця Елісса Бемпорад зазначила, що поточна війна впливає на вивчення єврейської історії Східної Європи. Історикиня вважає, що об'єкт дослідження -«російські євреї», як він тривалий час сприймався в західній історіографії, поставлений під сумнів. Використання подібної термінології фактично тягне за собою екстраполяцію імперської моделі на академічні дослідження. Як наслідок, регіональні особливості були проігноровані, а спільноти, які жили поза російськими територіями, були позбавлені голосу. За спостереженнями Бемпорад, як редакторки журналу «Jewish Social Studies», автори які надсилали свої тексти, ніколи не робили винятку із цього правила слововжитку. Однак, тепер проблематизація цієї ситуації стала очевидною. Ці слова знаної дослідниці євреїв на білоруських землях та антисемітизму здається підкреслили очевидний зсув, постколоніальний поворот у єврейських студіях Східної Європи. В той же час, підкреслюючи очевидність деколонізації, яка сьогодні є вимогою суспільства, історик Ілля Герасимов застерігає від сприйняття позиції її творців як непроблемної та апріорі моральної (Герасимов, 2023). Control of their own educational systems by aboriginal peoples is the key to their social, economic, and cultural survival. During the' 70s and' 80s, considerable achievements were made in establishing some measure of local jurisdiction. This control has been manifested in a number of different ways: administration, finance, curriculum, and teacher training. This report describes what some mainstream instructors involved in an aboriginal teachereducation pro gram have learned about themselves and their aboriginal students. This brief report is a synopsis of the authors' experiences working with various aboriginal groups. A great deal has been learned as a result of interactions with thern. Galileo’s understanding of nature remains a relatively underexplored subject.
While a significant portion of the historiographical debate has revolved around whether Galileo adhered to a philosophical framework rooted in mathematical realism – famously articulated by Alexandre Koyré’s assertion that le réel incarne le mathématique – this contribution aims to shift scholarly focus towards an aspect of Galileo’s conception of nature that, despite some recognition, has not received adequate attention in existing literature. Regardless of its mathematical foundations, Galileo argued that nature transcends complete and absolute human understanding. This perspective, linked to a distinct conception of God as a geometer and deeply motivated by an anti-anthropocentric view, finds its most explicit elucidation in Galileo’s letter sent to Gallanzone Gallanzoni on July 16, 1611.

A history of the book approach to Thomas Hutchinson's History of Massachusetts Bay (published 1764-1828) recovers his commitment to preserve facts and his place in eighteenth-century historiography. Hutchinson's vilification by patriots still obscures our understanding of his loyalism. The article reassesses late colonial society, the American Revolution, and Anglo-American culture in the British Atlantic World.

The article carries out an approach to some theoretical positions that draw near cultural studies, cultural history and its relationship with plastic and visual arts, in the historiographical analysis of contemporary thinkers that undertake trans-disciplinary looks, to elaborate new theories that sustain index research in plastic and visual arts.

My research examines Dante's engagement with the traditions regarding collective memory in medieval Florence. In particular, it investigates the ways in which Dante responds to public and private attempts at forging both individual and collective identity in Florence. Selecting key chronicles, inscriptions and visual sources alluded to in the Commedia, the implications of Dante's representation in terms of his ideological response are then extensively discussed.After introducing the central passages from the Commedia relevant to my project and a review of selected secondary literature on Dante and history, the dissertation introduces the Medieval Latin Chronica de origine civitatis florentiae as Dante's most important source regarding his city's foundation. Tradisi Ruwahan merupakan salah satu tradisi yang biasa dilaksanakan masyarakat Desa Sindangsari Kecamatan Banjrsari Kabupaten Ciamis sebelum datangnya bulan suci ramadhan, yang didalamnya terkandung Nilai-Nilai Kearifan Lokal. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah menggunakan kualitatif Historis yaitu 1) Heuristik, 2) Kritik, 3) Interpretasi, 4) Historiografi. Selain itu juga menggunakan Metode Antropologi yang merupakan metode penelitian Sosial-Budaya (cultur domain) dengan menggunakan triangulasi atau beberapa metode pada saat mengumpulkan dan menganalisis data secara bersamaan (observasi, wawancara, studi kepustakaan, dan catatan lapangan). Pengumpulan data yangdigunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah 1) Studi Literatur, 2) Studi Lapangan. Dari hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Tradisi Ruwahan hingg saaat ini masih terus dilestarikan, sedangkan nilai-nilai Kearifan Lokal dari Tradisi Ruwahan bisa dilihat dari Hubungan antara Manusia dengan manusia (hablum minannas), Hubungan Manusia dengan Alam (hablum minalalam), Hubungan Manusia dan Tuhan (hablum minallah). Adapun manfaat dari penelitian ini adalah sebagai bahan informasi mengenai Tradisi Ruwahan di Desa Sindangsari Kecamatan Banjarsari Kabupaten Ciamis, dan diharapkan agar masyarakar sepatutnya merasa bangga dan selalau melestarikannya sebagai entitas budaya lokal suatau daerah.

En el siguiente articulo haremos referencia a las observaciones de los actos escolares del Bicentenario de la Independencia realizadas en jardines de infantes de la ciudad de Tandil como parte de la cursada de la materia Ciencias Sociales del tercer ano de la carrera de Educacion Inicial. En dichas observaciones se hizo foco en la estructura de los actos, el abordaje de la historia con los ninos pequenos y los discursos dirigidos a los adultos. Nuestra intencion es observar si siguen vigentes rasgos y formas tradicionales en el tratamiento de las efemerides o si responden a perspectivas pedagogicas mas renovadas.

The tile production of the Royal Factory of the Count of Aranda has, generally, occupied a discreet place among the interests of the scientific community. Certainly, it is a subject that traditionally has been somewhat confusing, especially since the publication of the classic Historia de la cerámica de Alcora by Manuel Escrivá de Romaní (1919). However, written sources from the late 18th century already present the count’s manufacture as a major tile producer within the Valencian panorama, while the reality was different. Having reached this point, the present work aims to carry out a complete bibliographical and historiographical review on the subject, trying to answer these questions.

Recent studies on religion and democracy in Classical Athens (e.g.,
Jameson 2014; Canevaro and Gray 2018; Petridou 2021) have argued that
an unmistakable two-directional relationship between religious life and
political action religion is obvious in every sphere of socio-political and
economic activity (education, healthcare, law-making, law enforcement,
etc.) and on every level of societal organisation in the city (from the individual to the household, and from the professional and cultic associations to the city-state as a whole). This chapter engages closely with recent socio-anthropological perspectives and looks afresh at the symbolic polyvalence of the epiphanic procession that led the exiled tyrannos Peisistratus back to Athens in the 550s BC (Hdt. 1.60.2–5) as an example of such unmistakably two-directional relationship between religious life and political action. Effectively, the present study joins forces with the other contributors of this volume to discuss the careful ritual construction and signification of that procession, and the means it employed to create a climate of political cohesion and celebration in the community.

How can we write the contemporary 'histories' of Captain Cook when they include such textual and material diversity? When that diversity ranges from children's rhymes to convenience stores as well as journals now claimed as iconic documents of the enlightenment? How might the insights of Bruno Latour into how the 'experimental' is produced in the laboratory be helpful in showing how Cook is produced in a settler culture? How does revealing the 'experimental' (the material and textual ethnography) of history show us new ways of 'doing' history that engages with its textual as well as its material diversity.

Three decades ago, South Korean director Kim Dong-won made two important documentaries about the struggles and everyday life of the people of Songhak Maeul. Yet Songhak Maeul remains little-known as a successful case of community capacity building in a marginalised neighbourhood in Seoul. This article provides a historical background and explains the impact of market-driven urban redevelopment on neighbourhood communities in Seoul. It revisits community activism in Songhak Maeul and highlights some of its achievements and legacies that deserve closer attention as a reminder of the importance of resilient neighbourhood communities in the face of growing environmental and social challenges in cities.

En esta edición, HiSTOReLo. Revista de Historia Regional y Local (Nro. 38) celebra la diversidad y profundidad de la historia regional y local, reconociendo la importancia de las tradiciones, la identidad y la variación cultural que moldean las comunidades. En Colombia y otras partes de América Latina, la historia se entrelaza en las tradiciones religiosas, los saberes ancestrales y la medicina tradicional, cada uno dejando una huella en el tiempo y el espacio. Así, en el presente número se propone como un espacio de reflexión histórica, donde la historia deja de ser una serie de eventos aislados y se convierte en un tejido vivo de relatos colectivos que definen quiénes somos y hacia dónde nos dirigimos.

В статье рассматриваются особенности поэтики дома в усадебном тексте в романе Э. Бронте «Грозовой Перевал». Прослеживается расщепление парадигмы дома на два жилища (усадьбы): Мыза Скворцов и Грозовой Перевал как противостояние топоса добра и зла. Исследуется миф об утраченном и обретенном рае в контексте «усадебного» романа писательницы.В статті розглядаються особливості поетики дому в садибному тексті в романі Е. Бронте «Буреверхи». Простежується розщеплення парадигми дому на дві оселі (садиби): Миза Шпаків і Грозовий Перевал як протистояння топосу добра і зла. From its conceptualization during the late nineteenth century to its grand opening in 1927 and through subsequent decades, the Coptic Hospital has been a fixture in the geographies and genealogies of sectarianism in Cairo. When Boutros Ghali Pasha established the Great Coptic Benevolent Society with other Coptic laity in 1881, he and the board of directors envisioned medical care for the Coptic poor as the organization's first and primary duty. When they faced a myriad of challenges in erecting the hospital, they pivoted to a broader purview of the society's mandate by expanding service to all Egyptians regardless of religious affiliation amid the most polemical sectarian encounters and debates of the early twentieth century. They mediated these tensions by employing a language of sectarian neutrality and claiming to contribute to Egypt's march toward “civilization” through the establishment of the country's first Egyptian-established and -operated private hospital. Yet many aspects of the hospital's development—from appointing department directors to tracking patients—continued to center religious identity as a salient category of medical management. This article examines the discursive and material trajectories of the Coptic Hospital through the prism of medical philanthropy and sectarian infrastructures in modern Cairo.

Penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimen yang bertujuan mengetahui peningkatan kemampuan hasil belajar siswa pada materi Eksponen melalui model pembelajaran Inquiri.Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas SMA Negeri 10 Kota Ternate yang tersebar di tiga kelas dengan jumlah 122 siswa. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XA berjumlah 30 siswa yang dijadikan sebagai kelas kontrol dan siswa kelas XB berjumlah 32 siswa yang dijadikan sebagai kelas eksperimen, tekhnik pengambilan sampel dilakukan dengan cara Sampling purposive. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui tes hasil belajar siswa dengan 5 butir soal sebagai instrument yang telah divalidasi oleh validator. Artikkelen presenterer og drøftar nokre historiografiske utfordringar, tendensar og politisk-teologiske refleksjonar kring tilhøvet mellom kristendom og politikk i Skandinavia på 1800-talet. Korleis skal rasjonell forsking forstå og skildre aktørar som trur på metafysiske fenomen? I lys av dette problemet blir to overordna aspekt ved forskingsfronten vurdert: 1) korleis luthersk kristendom har verka inn på dei politiske kulturane i Skandinavia, og 2) betydninga til prestar, Bibelen og religiøse minoritetar. Avslutningsvis foreslår eg at vedvarande og utydelege krysningar mellom politikk og teologi må inkluderast og analyserast som potensiell forklaringsfaktor i historiografiske og samfunnsvitskaplege arbeid. Politisk-teologiske handlingar må forståast på sine eigen premiss, men vurderast på eit rasjonelt-vitskapleg grunnlag, dersom ein vil formulere teoriar forankra i empirien.

We intend this manner, concisely exposing addressed deferent perspectives on the conflict, showing how it has been interpreted by the historical knowledge in different periods. At first, reading about war from a positivist perspective, then the bias revisionist and then from new inflows arising from the new political and military history. Finally we will show how the historiography piauiense worked the theme in the recent past.

El estudio de las reinas consortes permite conocer una parte importante de las antiguas cortes mayas, analizando desde otra perspectiva la naturaleza del poder político. Este artículo indaga, de manera breve, en algunas de las facetas más importantes de la vida de las reinas, como su nacimiento y matrimonio, su etapa como progenitoras dinásticas y su papel productivo.

Durante las décadas centrales del siglo XIX, y de manera previa a que la historiografía argentina adquiriera contornos más eruditos o científicos, fue el género autobiográfico el que ofreció en el espacio litoral y rioplatense las primeras representaciones del pasado postrevolucionario. Desde una mirada testimonial, individual y subjetiva, las memorias sirvieron para brindar una reconstrucción inicial de los hechos y colaboraron en la construcción de identidades, tanto a nivel nacional, como regional, provincial y local. Estas funciones cumplieron las Memorias de don Domingo Crespo (c. 1847-1854), elaboradas por un vecino y hombre principal de la provincia de Santa Fe que, entre otros cargos relevantes, se desempeñó como gobernador –por su itinerario político lopista y antirrosista que lo aproximó a Justo José de Urquiza– en la hora de la organización constitucional argentina. Sus Memorias son analizadas en este artículo como un ejemplo de escritura autobiográfica, a partir de los nuevos enfoques que postulan la utilidad de este tipo de textos para los estudios de historia de la historiografía, y como un relato que resulta una justificación de las tendencias autonómicas y federales sostenidas por aquella provincia y por Estanislao López y sus hombres, frente al centralismo de Buenos Aires.

Las lenguas documentadas de la familia lingüística charrúa son el chaná, el güenoa, y el charrúa propiamente dicho (posiblemente también el muy poco conocido mbeguá), que se hablaron principalmente en parte de la actual República Oriental del Uruguay y de las provincias argentinas de Entre Ríos y Santa Fe. Hasta relativamente poco tiempo atrás, todas estas lenguas se conocían solo a través de breves vocabularios y se consideraban completamente extinguidas, pero hace casi dos décadas se encontró en Entre Ríos un último semi-hablante de una de ellas, el chaná (Viegas Barros 2006).
El propósito del presente trabajo consiste en realizar un análisis en los niveles descriptivo, comparativo y tipológico de los numerales en las lenguas de esta familia lingüística. El trabajo se estructura de la siguiente manera:

(1) se presentan los numerales documentados en cada lengua;
(2) se analizan morfológicamente (siempre que resulta posible) cada uno de estos numerales,
(3) se establece una caracterización tipológica de los sistemas numerales de cada una de las lenguas,
(4) se reconstruyen los numerales postulables para el proto-charrúa
(5) se examinan las etimologías propuestas hasta el momento para algunos numerales de las lenguas charrúas, y se plantean otras hipótesis nuevas en caso necesario,
(6) se revisan y evalúan las comparaciones externas propuestas hasta el momento.

Los resultados se muestran coherentes con la idea de que el sistema numeral original del proto-charrúa debió de haber sido bastante limitado, posiblemente compuesto por no más de dos o tres unidades, a partir del cual se habrían desarrollado en las lenguas históricamente documentadas sistemas decimales, posiblemente como resultado del contacto con otras lenguas. Las comparaciones externas son en algunos casos sugerentes, pero de ninguna manera resultan concluyentes para establecer posibles relaciones distantes con otras lenguas sudamericanas. Tipológicamente, son de especial interés la existencia en la lengua charrúa de un sistema de base cuatro, poco frecuente en las lenguas del mundo, y el registro de un sistema numeral fluido (es decir, no completamente fijo) en el estado actual de la lengua chaná.

Shortly before the outbreak of World War I, the so-called Elberfeld horses, the counting and speaking animals, were among the most debated subjects of the newborn comparative psychology. Yet, they have left little trace in the historiography of this discipline, mostly as an appendix of the more famous Clever Hans. Their story is generally told as the prelude to the triumph of reductionistic experimental psychology. By paying a more scrupulous attention than has so far being done to the second life of Hans, and to the endeavours of his second master, Karl Krall, this article explores the story of the Elberfeld horses as an important, if so far neglected, chapter in the history of experimental parapsychology.

largo de sus años de existencia ha evitado los trabajos de síntesis o meramente descriptivos y ha acogido una amplia diversidad de monografías, artículos, noticias y contribuciones siempre originales en todos los campos de la Tardoantigüedad (cultura material, fuentes literarias, mentalidad, historiografía, repertorio de novedades y crítica de libros). Esta dimensión de amplio espectro no implica, llegado el caso, una desatención de las investigaciones en zonas geográfi cas concretas abordando aspectos históricos en su manifestación regional, con la misma exigencia de hacer aportaciones en temas originales y no reelaboraciones o síntesis. Esta revista está abierta a todos los planteamientos y orientaciones metodológicas que superen el estricto examen del consejo de redacción, pero a la vez se puede plantear un tema central de discusión o incluso monografías que sirva de marco conceptual y temático a los originales. El rasgo distintivo de la línea editorial de esta revista es su búsqueda de aportaciones originales, claras, de carácter inédito, que vayan a hacer una aportación nueva, profesional y metodológicamente solvente, que sea signifi cativa en el ámbito de los estudios de la Tardoantigüedad. La veracidad y honestidad son las señas de identidad más preciadas para la revista Antigüedad y Cristianismo. Este trabajo se inscribe en los proyectos de investigación PADCAM S2007/HUM-0543 y FFI2010-14963 (HLGE0), fi nanciado por el antiguo Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (hoy de Economía y Competitividad). El comienzo del capítulo veintitrés de la Poética ofrece una serie de dificultades. Los editores modernos suelen preferir a las lecturas que ofrecen los manuscritos, por otra parte divergentes entre sí, un texto basado en la conjetura. En lo que respecta a tradición textual y ediciones hay que decir en primer lugar que poseemos cuatro fuentes autónomas del texto aristotélico: el Parisinus Graecus 1741, el Riccardianus 46, la traducción medieval latina de la Poética y una traducción árabe hecha a su vez sobre una traducción al siríaco. 1) El Parisinus Graecus 1741, llamado A por los editores, fue copiado posiblemente hacia el siglo x u xi. Se trata del mejor y más antiguo de los manuscritos griegos de la Poética; ofrece un texto de buena tradición en el que los errores son los ligeros descuidos corrientes. Su valor fue reconocido en el siglo xix y durante mucho tiempo gozó de una autoridad indiscutida. Hoy día su posición no es ya de preeminencia absoluta, pero se le sigue concediendo prioridad frente a otras fuentes. 2) A finales del siglo xix se vio que el Riccardianus 46, B o R para los editores, representa una tradición indepen-
