Zostera marina is a species of seagrass known by the common names common eelgrass and seawrack. It is an aquatic plant native to marine environments on the coastlines of mostly northern sections of North America and Eurasia.
Distribution
This species is the most wide-ranging marine flowering plant in the Northern Hemisphere. It lives in cooler ocean waters in the North Atlantic and North Pacific, and in the warmer southern parts of its range it dies off during warmer seasons. It grows in the Arctic region and endures several months of ice cover per year. It is the only seagrass known from Iceland. It can be found in bays, lagoons, estuaries, on beaches, and in other coastal habitat. The several ecotypes each have specific habitat requirements. It occurs in calmer waters in the sublittoral zone, where it is rarely exposed to air. It anchors via rhizomes in sandy or muddy substrates and its leaves catch particulate debris in the water which then collects around the bases of the plants, building up the top layer of the seabed.
Zostera or Eelgrass is flowering plant found from the shallow subtidal to about 8 m in the NE Atlantic. These are plants at low water at Carreroe (An Cheathrú Rua), Co. Galway, Ireland.

Did you know that seagrass is a type of terrestrial grass - it's a plant that evolved on the land and migrated to the sea a very long time ago? It has seeds and produces pollen and flowers!

Zostera marina seedlings, Osborn, IoW July 2021
Zostera mainly reproduces by asexual means (spreading rhizomes), right? Recent genetic work on the southern Channel/Manche coasts have shown that the genetic diversity within meadows is much higher than previously thought so it must seed into those meadows. Here we see seedlings on a dive in the subtidal in a gap in the zostera canopy. They are tiny and hard to find for a diver, so looking for them with dropdown video? Problematic! And you need to dig some of the tiny plants up (and replace) to see for sure that they are seedlings.

Out at the lagoon we visit on our Seal tours there is a lovely seagrass bed which is an important nursery area. With clear Atlantic water washed by the gulf stream we see all sorts of interesting marine life. However cruising along this area with dappled sunlight is just as magical!
