Rabbitt was born to Irishimmigrants in Brooklyn, New York in 1941, and was raised in the nearby community of East Orange, New Jersey. His father was an oil-refinery refrigeration worker, and a skilled fiddle and accordion player, who often entertained in local New York City dance halls. By age twelve Rabbitt was a proficient guitar player, having been taught by his scoutmaster, Bob Scwickrath. During his childhood Rabbitt became a self-proclaimed "walking encyclopedia of country music". After his parents divorced, he dropped out of school at age sixteen. His mother, Mae, explained this action by saying that Eddie "was never one for school [because] his head was too full of music." He later obtained a high school diploma after taking courses at night school.
Eddie Rabbitt is the debut album of Country music artist Eddie Rabbitt. It was released in 1975 under the Elektra Records label. The album produced three singles: "You Get to Me", "Forgive and Forget" and "I Should Have Married You." The latter two both reached the top 15 in country music charts. Also included on the album was "Pure Love". A song written by Rabbitt that had been originally recorded by Ronnie Milsap the previous year.
"You and I" is a song written by Frank J. Myers, and recorded by American country music artists Eddie Rabbitt and Crystal Gayle as a duet. It was released in October 1982 as the first single from the album Radio Romance. "You and I" became a major country pop crossover hit for both artists.
In 2005, the song ranked number 7 on CMT's 100 Greatest Duets in Country Music. Gayle performed the duet Raul Malo of The Mavericks since Rabbitt had died of lung cancer in 1998.
"You and I" went to number 1 on the Country chart for one week.
On the Billboard Hot 100, the song spent 23 weeks on the chart, peaking at number 7, and making it the 12th biggest song of the year.
Crystal Gayle is the eponymous debut album by Crystal Gayle, although she had previously recorded material which was not released until later. The album peaked at #25 on the Billboard Country Albums chart, and included three charting Hot Country Singles: "Wrong Road Again" at #6, "Beyond You" at #27, and "This Is My Year For Mexico" at #21. Also included is her first rendition of "When I Dream," which would become a big hit three years later on the release of her 1978 album When I Dream. The recording of "Beyond You" is the same one that reappears on 1979's We Should Be Together.
In October 2004, it was announced that "You and I" would be the theme of Air Canada's new advertising campaign. At the same time the airline unveiled new in-flight service products and new aircraft livery. Dion also recorded a one-minute-long French version of the song called "Mes ailes à moi." Both versions were used in Air Canada's commercials.
The single was a radio hit, topping the Canadian Adult Contemporary Chart.
"You and I (We Can Conquer the World)" is a song written and sung by Stevie Wonder. The track is found on his 1972 album Talking Book. Wonder is also credited for playing piano and T.O.N.T.O. synthesizer on the song.
Barbra Streisand included a rendition of the song in her 1975 album Lazy Afternoon. This is the first time the song is listed and released as "You and I".
O'Bryan recorded the song as the title cut from his 1983 album.
Vesta Williams included a cover in her 1998 album Relationships.
