Yehudi Menuhin, Baron Menuhin OM KBE (22 April 1916 – 12 March 1999) was an American-born violinist and conductor, who spent most of his performing career in Britain. He is widely considered one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century.
Yehudi Menuhin was born in New York City to a family of Belorussian Jews. Through his father Moshe, a former rabbinical student and anti-Zionist, he was descended from a distinguished rabbinical dynasty. In late 1919 Moshe and his wife Marutha (née Sher) became American citizens, and changed the family name from Mnuchin to Menuhin. Yehudi's sisters were concert pianist and human rights activist Hephizibah, and pianist, painter and poet Yaltah.
Menuhin's first violin instruction was at age four by Sigmund Anker (1891–1958); his parents had wanted Louis Persinger to teach him, but Persinger initially refused. Menuhin displayed exceptional talent at an early age. His first public appearance, when only seven, was as solo violinist with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in 1923. Persinger then agreed to teach him, and accompanied him on the piano for his first few solo recordings in 1928–29.
Gennady Nikolayevich Rozhdestvensky, CBE (Russian: Генна́дий Никола́евич Рожде́ственский; born 4 May 1931) is a Russian conductor.
Rozhdestvensky was born in Moscow. His parents were the noted conductor and pedagogue Nikolai Anosov and soprano Natalya Rozhdestvenskaya. His given name was Gennady Nikolayevich Anosov, but he adopted his mother’s maiden name in its masculine form for his professional career so as to avoid the appearance of nepotism. His younger brother, the painter P.N. Anosov, retained their father's name.
He studied conducting with his father at the Moscow Conservatory and piano with Lev Oborin. Already known for having conducted Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker ballet at the Bolshoi Theatre at the age of 20, he quickly established his reputation. He premiered many works of Soviet composers, including Edison Denisov's Le soleil des Incas (Sun of the Incas) (1964), as well as giving the Russian premiere of Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream and the Western premiere of Dmitri Shostakovich's Fourth Symphony at the 1962 Edinburgh Festival. He became general artistic director of the Bolshoi Theatre in 2000, and in 2001 conducted the world premiere of the original version of Sergei Prokofiev's opera The Gambler. Not long afterwards he resigned, citing desertion by singers, production problems and hostile coverage by the Moscow press.

Yehudi Menuhin the American-born British violinist playing a Stradivarius before it is auctioned at Sotheby's 1971
Yehudi Menuhin was the twentieth century's greatest violinist. As famous as any Hollywood star, he even had songs written about him. A child prodigy, unmatched by his contemporaries, he achieved more by his teens than most artists do in a lifetime. But the man behind the violin was harder to know - his cocooned and curious childhood marked him emotionally for life. Endlessly touring and crossing continents and cultures, the man whose contract with EMI was the longest in the history of the music industry took classical music out of the concert hall because he believed music was for everyone and had the power to change lives. An impassioned idealist, Yehudi wanted to give more to the world than music - he became a tireless figure fighting for the humanitarian issues he believed in. Prese...

A rare recording of the Brahms Violin Concerto in D (Op. 77) and the bach Solo Partita No3 in E Recorded at BBC Maida Vale in 1943. The following is a recent blog post from Mary Lawson who was the recording engineer at the BBC Maida Vale. Yehudi Menuhin, the now renowned violinist and former child prodigy whom I had heard on the wireless in my school days, would arrive from the US and be the soloist with Adrian Boult and the BBC SO. As he was being flown over by the US Air Force the Estimated Time of Arrival was uncertain, so I had to be prepared for any possibility. I spent the morning selecting the sharpest sapphire cutters and doing test recordings on reels of film to find any flaws in the surface coating which might affect the track. He was to play the Brahms Violin Concerto so I ...

One of the great thrills of playing classical music happens when you get a really good conductor. This is one of the most inspiring and thrilling performances anywhere. One genius interpreting the music of another genius.
Some years ago, this performance was uploaded here in two parts. However, here it is again, this time complete and uninterrupted. The distinguished and versatile Russian conductor was appearing at the 2007 Proms in London's Royal Albert Hall and the orchestra was the Royal Philharmonic. Incidentally, Maestro Rozhdestvensky stepped in at very short notice to take over this Prom, as the scheduled conductor, Daniele Gatti, was unable to appear. It is to his great credit that Rozhdestvensky was able to give such a splendid performance.

He has also directly experienced one of the cruelest and restrictive dictatorships of the 20th century, which means that he is one of the few remaining witnesses who can speak about what it was like to live and work as a musician in the former Soviet Union - and with each year that the dictatorship moves further into the past, firsthand accounts such as this become ever more rare and valuable.
