Viking Raid on Lindisfarne (AD793)
The attack on Lindisfarne in 793 came from a viking settlement in the North, possibly originating in Norway.
It was not the first time that raiders had attacked England.
But it was this attack on Christian land that may have begun what is now known as the ‘Viking Age.’

We Explored the Holy Island Brutally Raided by the Vikings
In 793 AD, the holy island of Lindisfarne was subject to one of the most infamous Viking raids on Britain. ‘Heathen' men plundered the sacred monastery in an event that shook Christian Europe.
Dan Snow travels across the tidal causeway to Lindisfarne to discover the rich culture of this holy place before the Vikings raided - a beautiful site of pilgrimage and artistry. He also goes to Jarrow to discover more about the powerful Anglo Saxon kingdom of Northumbria and its great religious and historical writers such as Bede.

Lindisfarne - An Age Borne in Fire - Extra History
📜 Lindisfarne, An Age Borne in Fire - Extra History
Troubling omens were recorded in Lindisfarne prior to the Viking invasion on June 8, 793 CE. It was the seat of the bishop for much of Northeastern Britain. Monks in the scriptorium produced some of the most celebrated illustrated manuscripts, and abroad they helped convert the pagans of Britain. Lindisfarne had been the final resting place of St. Cuthbert, so pilgrims often came and enriched the priory and the town. It never occurred to anyone that when strange ships appeared on the horizon, they might be hostile. The men who disembarked were fierce, unknown, and merciless. They cut down monks in the churches and looted the church... then left. Bishop Higbald survived and sent the news across Europe. From there, the frequency of raids o...

Anglo-Saxon Music ~ Northumbrian Lord's Prayer
The final version of the Northumbrian Lord's Prayer in Old English or Anglo-Saxon, constructed around 720 AD in the "North of the Humber" dialect, with no infrasound and proper pronunciation as I understand it. Viewers and the algorithm are probably getting sick of it, so I won't fiddle with it any longer, hahahah! :)) The tune is of course Consort No. XII written by King Henry VIII of the Tudor Dynasty, hence the thumbnail and slides! I'm satisfied with this one, I think. Thank you all for listening and subscribe for more!

Motoring Oddities EP9 Is this the largest tidal road in England? Lindisfarne Causeway Northumberland
#northumberland #lindisfarne #holyisland
Today we're exploring the historically interesting Holy Island and Lindisfarne. With it's castles, viking heritage and ancient ruins, it's a fantastic place to visit.
However, there is a problem... access to the island can only be made at certain times of day for you see, the only road you can use will be submerged under several metres of sea water at high tides. Many people have attempted last minute crossings and almost always have come to regret that decision.
In this episode we look at the Lindisfarne Causeway, a road that twice a day is submerged under the sea.
Join me in the series you didn't know you needed. We'll be looking at several 'Motoring Oddities' from the smallest, to the largest, to the longest and the highest. It's ultimat...

And History Hit is on site at the Lindisfarne excavations of DigVentures: working with Durham University they have uncovered remarkable rune-inscribed namestones and a charming glass gaming piece that reveals the vibrant culture of the North Sea world in the early medieval period. Most intriguing of all is a complicated multiple burial that Dan witnesses being meticulously excavated.
We also examine how the Lindisfarne attack of 793 fits with the wider story of Viking raiding and settlement. Dr Jane Kershaw of Oxford University puts it into context, from earlier forays further south to the economic factors that could have driven the Vikings seaborne adventures - raids that changed the kingdom of Northumbria, and far beyond, forever…

https://wn.com/We_Explored_The_Holy_Island_Brutally_Raided_By_The_Vikings
In 793 AD, the holy island of Lindisfarne was subject to one of the most infamous Viking raids on Britain. ‘Heathen' men plundered the sacred monastery in an event that shook Christian Europe.
Dan Snow travels across the tidal causeway to Lindisfarne to discover the rich culture of this holy place before the Vikings raided - a beautiful site of pilgrimage and artistry. He also goes to Jarrow to discover more about the powerful Anglo Saxon kingdom of Northumbria and its great religious and historical writers such as Bede.

From there, the frequency of raids only increased and raged across all of Europe. The burgeoning flame of Lindisfarne was almost snuffed out. It was the first time in history that the reach of Christianity shrank, rather than expanded. But what about the other side of the story? These "barbarians," who would become known as Vikings, were striking back at a culture that looked down on them, insulted their faith, and tried to swindle them at trade. They had realized how poorly defended both the British Isles and mainland Europe were, and how rich they were in fertile land. They put their vast knowledge of shipcraft to work and turned trading routes into raiding routes, finding new lands for them to settle. The Viking Age had begun.

The Lindisfarne Gospels is a highly significant illuminated manuscript created in the late 7th or early 8th century. It consists of 258 leaves of calfskin vellum and includes the four Gospels from the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The text is written in Latin, using St. Jerome’s Vulgate translation of the Christian Bible. Notably, a 10th-century inscription attributes the creation of the manuscript to Eadfrith, Bishop of Lindisfarne, who likely spent at least five years crafting it.
The manuscript is renowned for its intricate illustrations and decorative elements. It features full-page portraits of each evangelist, historiated initials, and elaborate “cross-carpet” pages, where a large cross is set against a background of ordered and yet teeming ornamentation. These pages are filled with fantastic images such as snakes twisting into knots and birds with curvaceous forms that create the illusion of a third dimension.
In 970, a provost named Aldred added a translation of the gospel text in between the lines of the original Latin text, making it the oldest extant translation of the Gospels in English.
The Lindisfarne Gospels were created in Lindisfarne Priory on Holy Island, off the coast of Northumberland, England. The manuscript has survived in almost pristine condition, despite a Viking raid on Lindisfarne in 793 that sacked the priory. It was later donated to the British Library in 1753 as part of Sir Robert Cotton’s collection.
Currently, the Lindisfarne Gospels can be viewed online on the British Library’s Digitised Manuscripts website. Additionally, a book titled “The Lindisfarne Gospels: Art, History and Inspiration” provides detailed commentary and high-quality illustrations of the manuscript.

It's ultimately pointless but that's half the fun.

Why Every Movie Looks Sort of Orange and Blue
Maybe you haven’t noticed, but in the past 20-or-so years there’s been a real catchy trend in major Hollywood movies to constrain the palette to orange and blue. The color scheme, also known as “orange and teal” or “amber and teal” is the scourge of film critics – one of whom calls this era of cinema a “dark age.”

Saints Vs Pagans - Jonah/St Ronan - Jura-Eoropie/Dura-Europos
Did the Irish/Scotch Gaels replace the Pagan Pictish religion with a grass roots Celtic Christianity?
Did the Romans discover Christianity in Britain and take it back to The Roman Empire?
Were any of the Saints real people or just previous pagan deities transformed to suit the new Christian cult?
Why is there so many parallels with the Holy Land and Scotland?
