Henry Valentine Miller (December 26, 1891 – June 7, 1980) was an American writer. He was known for breaking with existing literary forms, developing a new sort of semi-autobiographical novel that blended character study, social criticism, philosophical reflection, explicit language, sex, surrealistfree association and mysticism. His most characteristic works of this kind are Tropic of Cancer (1934), Black Spring (1936), Tropic of Capricorn (1939) and The Rosy Crucifixion trilogy (1949–59), all of which are based on his experiences in New York and Paris, and all of which were banned in the United States until 1961. He also wrote travel memoirs and literary criticism, and painted watercolors.
Early life
Miller was born to Lutheran German parents, Louise Marie (Neiting) and tailor Heinrich Miller, at their home, 450 East 85th Street in the Yorkville section of Manhattan, New York City. As a child, he lived for nine years at 662 Driggs Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, known at that time (and referred to frequently in his works) as the Fourteenth Ward. In 1900, his family moved to 1063 Decatur Street in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. After finishing elementary school, although his family remained in Bushwick, Miller attended Eastern District High School in Williamsburg. As a young man, he was active with the Socialist Party of America (his "quondam idol" was the black Socialist Hubert Harrison). He attended the City College of New York for one semester.
Henry Armstrong Miller (born July 16, 1969) is a former sumo wrestler, raised in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, who competed under the shikonaSentoryū Henri(戦闘竜 扁利). The first wrestler from the US mainland to reach the top makuuchi division, he made his professional debut in 1988 and reached a highest rank of maegashira 12 before retiring in 2003. He is currently a mixed martial artist.
Early life
He was born in Tachikawa, Japan, the son of an African-American father and Japanese mother. He was born on the same day that the Apollo 11 lunar mission left Earth and his middle name was given to him by his father in honor of Neil Armstrong. He lived on Yokota Air Base until the age of six, when he moved with his family to St Louis, Missouri. He grew up in Ferguson. His dream of becoming a professional football player was ended by a knee injury in his senior year of high school, but he had also been wrestling since elementary school and he had qualified for the state championships. After graduating in 1987 he returned to Japan to try professional sumo.
Educated at Newcastle University, Miller served in Royal Air Force before becoming Reader in Neurology at Newcastle University in 1961. He went on to be Professor of Medicine (Neurology) in 1964, Dean of Medicine in 1966 and Vice Chancellor in 1968. He notably said:
Miller was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-eighth Congress, defeating the incumbent Republican Speaker of the House, Galusha Grow. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1864. He was a delegate to the 1864 Democratic National Convention. He resumed the practice of law and also engaged in journalism. He died in Harrisburg in 1870. Interment in Harrisburg Cemetery.
Henry Miller (1785–1866) was the first commandant of the Moreton Bay penal colony in Queensland, Australia.
Early life
Henry Miller was born in 1785 in Londonderry, Ireland, the son of a clergyman. Henry Miller entered the army at an early age, being gazetted as an ensign in the 40th Regiment of Foot in
1799, when only 14. He married some ten years later, and his eldest son, Henry Miller, was born on 30 December 1809 in Londonderry.
His brother, Joseph Miller, was Mayor of Londonderry on five different occasions. His nephew, Sir William Miller, was also mayor.
War service
Miller was in the 40th Regiment which served under the Duke of Wellington on the Peninsula. When Wellington commenced his campaign of 1812 by taking Ciudad Rodrigo, Miller took part in the assault, which in which 90 officers and 1200 men were killed.
Miller then crossed the Atlantic Ocean with the 40th. He was at the unsuccessful attack on New Orleans on 8 January 1815 when the commanding officer, Sir E Pakenham, was killed.
Henry Miller (July 21, 1827 in Brackenheim – October 14, 1916 in California) was a German-Americanrancher who at one point in the late 19th century was one of the largest land-owners in the United States.
Biography
Born in Germany as Heinrich Alfred Kreiser, he immigrated to New York City in 1846, where he worked as a butcher. He came out to California in 1850 under the name Henry Miller, a name borrowed from the non-transferable steamer ticket he had purchased from a friend in New York.
Miller built up a thriving butcher business in San Francisco, later going into partnership with Charles Lux, also a German immigrant and a former competitor, in 1858. The Miller and Lux company expanded rapidly, shifting emphasis from meat products to cattle raising, and soon became the largest producer of cattle in California and one of the largest landowners in the United States, owning 1,400,000 acres (5,700km2) directly and controlling nearly 22,000 square miles (57,000km2) of cattle and farm land in California, Nevada, and Oregon.

Henry Miller
Henry Miller's literary works rely heavily on the autobiographical and the confessional. So it should come as no surprise that the 77-year-old writer offers an intimate and revealing look at his life and work during this wide-ranging conversation, which originally aired on Quebec television in 1969.

The 11 Writing Commandments of Henry Miller
Novelist Henry Miller changed the American writing scene forever. By brining in the taboo with books like his "The Tropic of Cancer" and "Black Spring" he helped bridge the gap between modernism and post-modernism. That's a beautiful place to be. Transcending the timidness of the modernists and rejecting the narcissism of the post-modernists enabled Miller to write tight prose without navel gazing. The Idea of 1/3 and 2/3 dead people was introduced by the philosopher G.I. Gurdjieff, who claimed that most people over 40 years of age are partly already dead.
Henry Miller's literary works rely heavily on the autobiographical and the confessional. So it should come as no surprise that the 77-year-old writer offers an intimate and revealing look at his life and work during this wide-ranging conversation, which originally aired on Quebec television in 1969.

What writing tips from Henry Miller did you enjoy most??
