Seward was born in southeastern New York, where his father, a farmer, owned slaves. He became educated as a lawyer, moving to the Western New York town of Auburn. Seward was elected to the New York State Senate in 1830 as an Anti-Mason. Four years later, he became the Whig Party's gubernatorial nominee. Though he was not successful in that race, Seward was elected governor in 1838, winning a second two-year term in 1840. During this period, he signed several laws advancing the rights and opportunities for black residents, as well as guaranteeing fugitive slaves jury trials in the state, protecting abolitionists, and using his position to intervene in cases of free blacks enslaved in the South.

The Attempted Murder of Sec'y of State William H. Seward
John Wilkes Booth was stimulated by his intense hostility to the administration of President Lincoln the delusive idea of winning the lasting gratitude of his Southerners for being the instrument of retrieving the fortunes of their dying cause.

William H. Seward House, Auburn, New York
William H. Seward served as U.S. Secretary of State under Presidents Lincoln and (Andrew) Johnson, as well as being Governor of New York before that. Seward was also known for his anti-slavery views, and befriending Harriet Tubman. Some mostly know him as the guy who led the country into purchasing the Alaskan territory from Russia which would temporarily be "Seward's Folly".
Despite of spending much time in Albany and Washington, DC, the house on South Street in Auburn is where Seward always called home. The home is available for tours at the top of the hour. I regretfully did not go in, as there are a lot of interesting stories behind most of the rooms inside. A gift shop is also in the house.
