He gave the Bampton Lectures in 1876. An eloquent preacher and the author of numerous theological works, including Primary Convictions, he is best known as a master of dignified and animated verse. His poems were collected in 1887 under the title of St Augustine's Holiday and other Poems.
Sir William Alexander (c. 1602 – 18 May 1638) was the founder, in 1629, of the Scottish colony at Port-Royal, now the site of modern Annapolis Royal. He also built forts in Cape Breton then in Port Royal. He was the son of colonizer William Alexander, 1st Earl of Stirling, but predeceased his father and never assumed his title.
For many years the site of Alexander's settlement, known as Charles Fort or Scots Fort, was thought to be on the hillside overlooking the Habitation. This site, marked by a stone monument and brass plaque, was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1951. The plaque has been removed and relocated as the actual site of Charles Fort has been established through archaeological evidence at Annapolis Royal; lying beneath Fort Anne.
Earl of Stirling was a title in the Peerage of Scotland. It was created on 14 June 1633 for William Alexander, 1st Viscount of Stirling. He had already been created a Baronet, of Menstrie in the County of Clackmannan, in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia on 12 July 1625, Lord Alexander of Tullibody and Viscount of Stirling on 4 September 1630 and was made Lord Alexander of Tullibody and Viscount of Canada at the same time as he was granted the earldom. The other peerage titles were also in the Peerage of Scotland. The titles became dormant upon the death of the fifth Earl in 1739, although one William Alexander of New York, known to history as Major General Lord Stirling of the Continental Army, years before the American Revolutionary War pursued a claim to succeed to the dormant earldom. The claim from senior male descent from the first Earl's grandfather was ultimately turned down by the House of Lords - although he was allowed to vote in the election of the Scottishrepresentative peers.
William Alexander was the son of Alexander of Menstrie and Marion, daughter of an Allan Couttie. As a young man William became tutor to the Earl of Argyll and accompanied him abroad. At a later date he received the place of Gentleman Usher to Prince Charles, son of James I of England (James VI of Scotland), and continued in favour at court after Prince Charles became Charles I of England in 1625. He built a reputation as a poet and writer of rhymed tragedies, and assisted King James I and VI in preparing the metrical version known as "The Psalms of King David, translated by King James" and published by authority of Charles I. James knighted him in 1609 and appointed him the Master of Requests for Scotland in 1614, effectively his private secretary. In 1615 he was made a member of the Scottish Privy Council.
Stirling, also known as Stirling Plantation, is a historic plantation home located near Massaponax, Spotsylvania County, Virginia. It was built between 1858 and 1860, and is a 2 1/2-story, five bay, brick Greek Revival and Federal dwelling. It measures 56 feet by 36 feet, and has a hipped roof and four interior end chimneys. It sits on a raised basement and features entrance porches added about 1912. Also on the property are the contributing kitchen dependency, smokehouse, family cemetery, and the undisturbed archaeological sites of a weaving house and three slave cabins.
Dutch King Willem-Alexander apologises for colonial-era slavery
Dutch King Willem-Alexander has formally apologised for the Netherlands’ involvement in slavery, saying he felt “personally and intensely” affected.
The king was speaking at a ceremony on Saturday marking the 160th anniversary of the legal abolition of slavery in the Netherlands, including its former colonies in the Caribbean.
“I’m standing here in front of you as your king and as part of the government. Today I am apologising myself,” Willem-Alexander said. “On this day we remember the Dutch history of slavery, I ask forgiveness for this crime against humanity.”
He said racism in Dutch society remains a problem and not everyone would support his apology.

The abdication takes place on Queen's Day, a national holiday in The Netherlands, giving the Dutch an opportunity to gather and celebrate in what are rather morose economic times with the country back in recession.
After her abdication, Queen Beatrix, the new King Willem-Alexander and his wife, Queen Maxima, appeared on the balcony of the Royal Palace in Amsterdam to an enthusiastic orange-clad crowd of well-wishers.
Nearly a million people are estimated to have converged on Amsterdam for the event, including more than 10,000 police officers deployed in a massive security operation.
The new King and Queen were joined by their three daughters, the eldest of whom, nine-year-old Catharina-Amalia, becomes Princess of Orange and heir to the throne.

"They (the dutch royal family) are very friendly, very approachable, not so stiff like some other royals!" added Astrubal.
Though he is the first king in 123 years, some, like André Krouwel, a political scientist at Amsterdam's Vrije Univesiteit, say Willem-Alexander owes his popularity to two women.
"While we are saying that we will have a king, I think what's very important is that we're also going to have a queen actually. Maxima is more popular actually than Willem-Alexander, equally popular to the current queen Beatrix, which says something (as) she just entered the royal family," explained Krouwel.
euronews correspondent in Amsterdams Olaf Bruns said: "It's all about symbols and the king will essentially be a symbol of national unity. His last real political role of choosing who puts together a coalition government after elections was scrapped by parliament a year ago."
