Annapolis Royal was the French settlement of Port Royal (briefly Charlesfort) until the Siege of Port Royal in 1710 by Britain. The town was the capital of Acadia and later Nova Scotia for almost 150 years, until the founding of the City of Halifax in 1749. It was attacked by the British six times before permanently changing hands after the Siege of Port Royal in 1710. Over the next fifty years, the French and their allies made six unsuccessful military attempts to regain the capital. Including a raid during the American Revolution, Annapolis Royal faced a total of thirteen attacks, more than any other place in North America.
As the site of several pivotal events during the early years of the colonisation of Canada, the historic core of Annapolis Royal was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1994.
Geography
Annapolis Royal is situated in a good but shallow harbor at the western end of the fertile Annapolis Valley, nestled between the North and South mountains which define the valley. The town is on south bank of the Annapolis River facing the heavily tidal Annapolis Basin. The riverside forms the waterfront for this historic town. Directly opposite Annapolis Royal on the northern bank of the river is the community of Granville Ferry. Allains Creek joins the Annapolis River at the town, defining the western side of the community. The Bay of Fundy is just over the North Mountain, 10 kilometers north of the town.
Canada (i/ˈkænədə/; French: [ka.na.da]) is a country in the northern part of North America. Its ten provinces and three territories extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean, covering 9.98million square kilometres (3.85million square miles), making it the world's second-largest country by total area and the fourth-largest country by land area. Canada's border with the United States is the world's longest land border. Canada is sparsely populated, the majority of its land territory being dominated by forest and tundra and the Rocky Mountains; about four-fifths of the country's population of 35 million people live near the southern border. The majority of Canada has a cold or severely cold winter climate, but southerly areas are warm in summer.
The land now called Canada has been inhabited for millennia by various Aboriginal peoples. Beginning in the 15th century, British and French colonies were established on the Atlantic coast, with the first establishment of a region called "Canada" occurring in 1537. As a consequence of various conflicts, the United Kingdom gained and lost territories within British North America until left, in the late 18th century, with what mostly geographically comprises Canada today. Pursuant to the British North America Act, on July 1, 1867, the colonies of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotiajoined to form the autonomous federal Dominion of Canada. This began an accretion of provinces and territories to the self-governing Dominion to the present ten provinces and three territories forming modern Canada. In 1931, Canada achieved near total independence from the United Kingdom with the Statute of Westminster 1931, and full sovereignty was attained when the Canada Act 1982 removed the last remaining ties of legal dependence on the British parliament.
Nova Scotia (Latin for "New Scotland", pronounced in English as /ˌnoʊvəˈskoʊʃə/) (French: Nouvelle-Écosse; Scottish Gaelic:Alba Nuadh; Scots:New Alba) is one of Canada's three Maritime provinces, and one of the four provinces which form Atlantic Canada. Its provincial capital is Halifax. Nova Scotia is the second-smallest province in Canada, with an area of 55,284 square kilometres (21,300sqmi), including Cape Breton and another 3,800 coastal islands. As of 2011, the population was 921,727, making Nova Scotia the second-most-densely populated province in Canada.
Nova Scotia is the third album by Cousteau, released in 2005 on the Endeavour record label. It was subsequently released in the U.S. under the band name 'Moreau' due to legal reasons on the One Little Indian label with two additional tracks (*). The US release also featured new artwork.
Davey Ray Moor had previously left the band leaving the main song writing duties to be taken over by lead singer Liam McKahey. "We thought it was the end and we were all feeling really emotional," says McKahey of Moor's departure. "But after a few pints, we'd decided to carry on and do it (the songwriting) ourselves. It was sink or swim, and we decided to swim."

RURAL RENAISSANCE: How the Citizens of Annapolis Royal Reinvented Canada’s Oldest Town tells the story of the Annapolis Royal Development Commission and its impactful projects that now, 40 years later, are still the backbone of this rural Nova Scotia community.
Spearheaded by Jane Nicholson, with the support of filmmaker Andrew Tolson and researcher Wilfred Allan, what started out as a short video for the community a year ago has become an hour-long documentary. So many people came forward to help make this film a reality and to celebrate the incredibly impactful work of the Annapolis Royal Development Commission. What it did for the community 40 years ago and what AIRO began doing in 2016 are a testament to how people step up to reinvent their community. It's one of the things that mak...

RURAL RENAISSANCE: How Canada’s Oldest Town Reinvented Itself
In 1975 the King's Theatre in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, was a dump - there is no other way to say it. BUT it didn’t stand out because it matched all the other shabby and dilapidated buildings in the downtown business district of the Town of Annapolis Royal. The restoration of the Theatre in the early 1980s acted as a catalyst in the economic revitalization of Annapolis Royal, and now that story is being told!
It's one of the things that makes Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, such a wonderful place to live, work, and play! Enjoy this preview of the full-length documentary.
There is no nice way to say this, but in 1975 the King’s Theatre in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, was a dump. BUT it didn’t stand out because it matched all the other shabby and dilapidated buildings in the downtown business area. The restoration of the Theatre in the early 1980s acted as a catalyst in the economic revitalization of Annapolis Royal.

Community and economic development in rural Nova Scotia is a long process. This documentary shares the impact of a project begun over 40 years ago and shows how the community continues to benefit from those efforts today. The documentary also acts as a touchpoint for future generations to consider when they look back 40 years from now.
Spoiler alert - the King's Theatre has remained a beautiful and integral part of the community! It features incredible performances and has been lovingly maintained by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers over the years. It is definitely no longer a dump!

This documentary captures the story of the Annapolis Royal Development Commission and its impactful projects that now, 40 years later, are still the backbone of the community. Spearheaded by Jane Nicholson and AIRO, with the support of filmmaker Andrew Tolson and researcher Wilfred Allan, what started out as a short video for the community has become an hour-long documentary to show what is truly possible when a community comes together.
