White Oak Bayou is one of the several waterways that give Houston, Texas, United States, its popular nickname, "The Bayou City." The Bayou originates northwest of FM 1960, near Highway 6 and U.S. Highway 290/Northwest Freeway, and meanders generally toward the southeast until it joins Buffalo Bayou in downtown Houston.
Watershed
White Oak Bayou drains areas throughout the northwest portions of Harris County as well as the City of Jersey Village and portions of the City of Houston. Its watershed covers about 111 square miles (290km2) and includes three primary streams: White Oak Bayou, Little White Oak Bayou and Cole Creek. In addition, Vogel Creek and Brickhouse Gully are among the major tributaries in the watershed. In all, there are about 151 miles (243km) of open streams in the White Oak Bayou watershed, including the primary and tributary channels.
Wildlife habitat exists on much of the undeveloped tracts scattered throughout the watershed and has been preserved and/or created in several of the large regional stormwater detention basins constructed by the Harris County Flood Control District. However, only a little undisturbed wildlife habitat exists along the urban channels of White Oak Bayou and its tributaries.
The genusQuercus (oak) contains about 600 species, some of which are listed here.
Subgenus Quercus
Section Quercus
The white oaks (synonym sect. Lepidobalanus or Leucobalanus). Europe, Asia, north Africa, North America. Styles short; acorns mature in 6 months, sweet or slightly bitter, inside of acorn shell hairless.
White Oak was named for a stand of white oak trees near the original town site.
History
White Oak was originally part of Versailles Township (one of the original townships of Allegheny County). It wasn't until March 21, 1948 that a petition requesting the formation of White Oak Borough was submitted to the County Court. On June 24, 1948, Judge Russell H. Adams signed the decree of incorporation of the new borough. The first borough building was located at 860 Maple Street inside the old Bowery School.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 6.7 square miles (17km2), of which 0.04 square miles (0.10km2) (0.45%) is water.
Emergency services
The borough maintains its own police department consisting of twelve full-time officers and eight patrol cars. Two volunteer fire departments serve different parts of the borough: White Oak No.1 VFC and Rainbow VFC. Emergency Medical Services are provided by White Oak EMS - a CAAS accredited basic and advanced life support service that includes a level-one wilderness search & rescue team.

New flood alert system for White Oak Bayou can warn residents in real time
Although Hurricane Harvey’s waters have long since receded, it is only a matter of time before the next flooding event will strike the Bayou City. And when that storm comes, another of the area’s watersheds will have a flood alert system thanks to researchers from Rice University and funding from Rice’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research.
Phil Bedient, the Herman and George R. Brown Professor of Civil Engineering and director of Rice's Severe Storm Prediction, Education and Evacuation from Disasters Center (SSPEED), and Jamie Padgett, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, have developed a system to monitor White Oak Bayou, one of the major watersheds in the Houston metropolitan area. The researchers used much of the technology from the Brays Bayou system to develop the White Oak system, which relies on real-time, radar-based rainfall estimates as rain is falling across a watershed. The system takes in new radar data every five minutes and generates a predictive flood map, which is updated every 15 minutes. Color coding indicates areas and travel routes likely to flood.
