The Mystery Of The Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon Helmet | King Arthur's Britain | Timeline
In the last programme of the series Francis focuses his attention on the Anglo-Saxon invasion.
Sheep-farming archaeologist, Francis Pryor, presents a brand new historical series which explores Britain A.D, the British national character and the ultimate British icon King Arthur.
Finding new and previously unexplained evidence, Francis Pryor overturns the idea that Britain reverted to a state of anarchy and disorder after the Romans left in 410 AD. Instead of doom and gloom Francis discovers a continuous culture that assimilated influences from as far a field as the Middle East and Constantinople. Through scrutinising the myth of King Arthur to find out what was really going on when the Romans left, Francis is confronted by evidence that confounds traditional views of the 'Dark Ages'. The...

Is The Anglo-Saxon Invasion Of England A Myth? | King Arthur's Britain | Chronicle
The Anglo-Saxons have been long thought to have invaded Britain after the fall of the Roman Empire in 410 AD. Francis Pryor argues that the huge political changes that took place in Britain at the time were caused by a shifting of allegiances within this country rather than a violent invasion from elsewhere. Finding new and previously unexplained evidence Francis overturns the idea that Britain was crushed under Roman rule, then reverted to a state of anarchy and disorder after the Romans left in 410 AD. Instead of doom and gloom Francis discovers a continuous culture that assimilated influences from as far a field as the Middle East and Constantinople.

There was a time before England was united. This was a time before William the Bastard decided to prove to his contemporaries that his bastard moniker would be erased with a swift conquest of the biggest island northwest of Europe. A time before the Battle of Hastings and the year 1066. A time when many petty kingdoms ruled, conquered, and were liberated, time and time again, by a specific people group. A people group that is, in fact, a blend of many and that authors of later dates would collectively call the Anglo-Saxons.

There was also no invasion of bloodthirsty Anglo Saxons, rampaging across the countryside. With new archaeological evidence Francis discovers a far more interesting story.

This episode covers the aftermath of the Roman withdrawal from Britain, focusing on the lack of sources for the centuries afterward and the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons. It begins with the legend of Hengist and Horsa, through the Northumbrian Golden Age all the way to the end of the Mercian supremacy in the wake of Offa's death.
Recommended books:
Chris Wickham - The Inheritance of Rome (2010) - A very good overview of all of European history, good for context.
James Campbell et al. - The Anglo-Saxons (1991) - Seriously, this book is the best book I've ever seen on Anglo-Saxon England, its very accessible and the essays are phenomenal.
If you have access to a university library I'd recommend a read through Dorothy Whitelock's English Historical Sources 500-1042.
Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.

Regions of Britain - The Welsh Marches | Shell Historical Film Archive
A March is an old English word for a border district. Offa's Dyke is the original border line between the English and the Welsh.
In the wake of the Roman departure from England in the fifth century, a relentless power struggle unfolded among border chieftains. It was Offa who ultimately rose to dominance, initiating the construction of a defining border dyke between two nations. Offa's Dyke, pays homage to King Offa, who reigned as the Anglo-Saxon ruler of Mercia.

Welsh Marches Line (Shrewsbury to Cardiff Central) - DRIVERS EYE VIEW
It is finally here, the last drivers eye view of 2022 has arrived, the Welsh Marches line from Shrewsbury to Cardiff Central on board one of Transport for Wales's loco hauled services. Our train will run non-stop to Hereford (45 minute distant) before continuing to call at Abergavenny, Cwmbran and Newport. As a bonus we continue along the South Wales Main Line into Cardiff.
This fasinating route was filmed over a year from November 2021 to October 2022 and so will see a variety of season changes. Sadly on the drivers eye view on some parts the sun was very low in the sky, not a cloud to be seen, so some shots maybe quite blinding. Nonetheless we have put in trackside shots, narration explaining the history (past and present) and captions on various locations with the Welsh names inprinted...

Knighton, Powys, Wales, Welsh Marches, UK.
Lying on the border of England and Wales, standing on Offa's Dyke, Knighton (Tref-y-Clawdd) gives the visitor a glimpse of perhaps what small towns were like several decades ago. As well as possessing an interesting variety of shops, pubs, and a library and museum too, more than anything there is a feeling of tranquillity to the place. Crows hop and caw in the quiet side streets; we came across what looked like the abandoned remnants of a garage sale; then just around the corner a shopping trolley with a child's plastic seaside bucket containing a crab, adding an appealing quirkiness to the town.
The Dyke was built toward the end of the 8th Century by King Offa to separate the kingdoms of Mercia from Wales. It ran for 149 miles from Chepstow to Prestatyn and some 80 miles of The Dyke i...

Welsh Marches Driver's eye view preview
www.video125.co.uk Welsh Marches Newport to Crewe Driver's eye view. The term Welsh Marches refers to the border area between Wales and England. The railway diverging from the South Wales Main Line at Newport closely follows the border through Abergavenny, Hereford, Shrewsbury and Nantwich. We join a 3-car class 175 Coradia DMU en route from Milford Haven to Manchester Piccadilly on the approach to Newport, the area having only recently been re-signalled to the South Wales Control Centre. From the SWCC, signalling passes to a 1960's panel signal box at Little Mill and then to traditional mechanical signalling at Abergavenny. Cameras inside all three signal boxes vividly show this technological progression.
Dozens of former and existing junctions coupled with some magnificent scenery ma...

Three Medieval Castles A Motor Cycle Adventure to the Welsh Marches Royal Enfield Himalayan BMW R
The weather was supposed to be dry and sunny but infact for the most part it was dull and damp. This didn't stop us from having a little adventure.
I was joined by my good friend Tony Hawkins as we rode a total of 160 miles from Wiltshire and crossed over into the Country of Wales at Monmouthshire. We stopped for tea and cake at Ross on Wye then continued our journey to vist the three castles close by.
tony was riding a BMW R100GS which dates from the early 1990's. I was riding the 2019 BS4 Royal Enfield Himalayan, affectionately named "Chug".
Camera's used.

Shell’s surprising and captivating Historic Film Archive dates from 1934 and covers a rich mix of topics from technology, science and engineering to craftsmanship, motorsport and travelogue.
The Shell Film Unit, responsible for the content, was a highly celebrated part of Britain’s Documentary Movement. Key figures from that movement were involved, including: Jack Beddington, Edgar Anstey, Arthur Elton, John Grierson, Kay Mander, Stuart Legg and Douglas Gordon.
Its films were wide reaching, often screened in cinemas and through the non-theatric film distribution circuit, which brought film to educational establishments and organisations across the UK. While many films covered technological themes related to Shell’s activities, others were entirely unrelated and served purely to educate the general public.
As Shell innovated in technologies that would provide oil and gas products for the world, the Shell Film Unit also innovated in the technological advancement of film, incorporating graphics and different forms of animation as early as the 1930s.
During WW2 the Shell Film Unit was co-opted into war effort, making films for the Ministry of Information’s film division. Its prowess in technological documentary suited the MoI’s need for technical training films.
While the name and the medium has changed many times over the years, the documentary tradition lives on at Shell. Its contemporary film team is part of Shell’s multi-disciplinary in-house agency, Creative Solutions. It continues making award-winning factual content that informs and educates the public, now usually released on social media platforms.

Later we head away from the hills and cross borderland country to the seek out the remains of, and in places restored Montgomeryshire Canal which takes us back into the quaint village of Llanymynech.

It ran for 149 miles from Chepstow to Prestatyn and some 80 miles of The Dyke is still traceable today.

www.video125.co.uk Welsh Marches Newport to Crewe Driver's eye view.
Dozens of former and existing junctions coupled with some magnificent scenery make this is a fascinating route, filmed in mid-summer sunshine all the way to Crewe. Dozens of mechanical signal boxes control our progress, including Europe's largest at Shrewsbury. Much of the history of the line as well as the current day operation of this Arriva Trains Wales service is in the narration.

“Pilgrimage is a fantastic word. People go on pilgrimages all the time, not just in a historical or religious sense, but it’s about going and visiting either a place that you feel is special in your life or somebody that’s meant something in your life. You can go on a pilgrimage to go see your great grandfather who died in the First World War for instance. They’re journeys of great weight and importance.” Bx #Saxon #CarpeDiem #ThePilgrimage

The Saxons - Barbarian Ancestors of the English (History of England)
The Saxons (Latin: Saxones, German: Sachsen, Old English: Seaxan, Old Saxon: Sahson, Low German: Sassen, Dutch: Saksen) were a group of early Germanic peoples whose name was given in the early Middle Ages to a large country (Old Saxony, Latin: Saxonia) near the North Sea coast of northern Germania, what is now Germany. In the late Roman Empire, the name was used to refer to Germanic coastal raiders, and also as a word something like the later "Viking". Their origins appear to be mainly somewhere in or near the above-mentioned German North Sea coast where they are found later, in Carolingian times. In Merovingian times, continental Saxons had also been associated with the activity and settlements on the coast of what later became Normandy. Their precise origins are uncertain, and they are s...

“Pilgrimage is a fantastic word. People go on pilgrimages all the time, not just in a historical or religious sense, but it’s about going and visiting either a place that you feel is special in your life or somebody that’s meant something in your life.

Their precise origins are uncertain, and they are sometimes described as fighting inland, coming into conflict with the Franks and Thuringians. There is possibly a single classical reference to a smaller homeland of an early Saxon tribe, but its interpretation is disputed. According to this proposal, the Saxons' earliest area of settlement is believed to have been Northern Albingia. This general area is close to the probable homeland of the Angles.

In contrast, the British "Saxons", today referred to in English as Anglo-Saxons, became a single nation bringing together Germanic peoples (Frisian, Jutish, Anglish (whence "English")) with a small part of the vanquished Romanized Britons, establishing long-lasting post-Roman kingdoms equivalent to those formed by the Franks on the continent. Their earliest weapons and clothing south of the Thames were based on late Roman military fashions, but later immigrants north of the Thames showed a stronger North German influence. The term "Anglo-Saxon", combining the names of the Angles and the Saxons, came into use by the 8th century (for example Paul the Deacon) to distinguish the Germanic inhabitants of Britain from continental Saxons (referred to in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as Ealdseaxe, 'old Saxons'), but both the Saxons of Britain and those of Old Saxony (Northern Germany) continued to be referred to as 'Saxons' in an indiscriminate manner, especially in the languages of Britain and Ireland.
While the English Saxons were no longer raiders, the political history of the continental Saxons is unclear until the time of the conflict between their semi-legendary hero Widukind and the Frankish emperor Charlemagne. While the continental Saxons are no longer a distinctive ethnic group or country, their name lives on in the names of several regions and states of Germany, including Lower Saxony (which includes central parts of the original Saxon homeland known as Old Saxony), Saxony in Upper Saxony, as well as Saxony-Anhalt (which includes Old, Lower and Upper Saxon regions).

We are planning to make other long form documentaries as a basic introduction for each playlist for each milestone on our road to 1000 Subscribers! That not only means a Medieval and 2 Modern History ones to accompany our Ancient History video (we will re-make the Ancient one as well once we hit our milestones!), but also 5 based on the regions of the World! They will be the introductory points for our regional and time period playlists.
