Whampoa anchorage was the old English name for the anchorage that was an intermediate way station between Macau and the city of Canton, now known as Guangzhou, situated in the Whampoa Roads. Images of the anchorage are common in 18th-century western art.
Ships from European trading companies, during the East India trade in the 17th, 18th and 19th century, used the anchorage for their trade in Canton. The traders rented storage for ships supplies and repair shops on Whampoa island.
Name
Now lying within Guangzhou's Huangpu District, the name Whampoa anchorage was used by the British, French and Danish for the anchorage at Whampoa island in the Pearl River approximately 12 miles (19km) east of the city of Canton. The island and the anchorage are usually referred to as just "Whampoa" in historical documents. The Swedes spelled the name Wampoa.
Geography
In the 18th and 19th centuries, under the Canton System, ships reached Whampoa by entering the Pearl River at Macau. After approximately 37 miles (60km), the channel narrowed into a strait lined by red rocks, known as the Bocca Tigris (the Tiger Mouth), a strategic and fortified part of the river. Whampoa was another 25 miles (40km) north of the strait and Canton with the European Thirteen Factories' landing stage at Jack-ass Point, some 10 to 16 miles (16 to 26km) farther up the river.
Anchorage (officially called the Municipality of Anchorage) is a unified home rule municipality in the U.S. State of Alaska. With an estimated 300,950 residents in 2013, it is Alaska's most populous city and contains more than 40 percent of the state's total population; among the 50 states, only New York has a higher percentage of residents who live in its most populous city. All together, the Anchorage metropolitan area, which combines Anchorage with the neighboring Matanuska-Susitna Borough, had a population of 396,142 in 2013.
Anchorage’s location on the globe puts it within 91⁄2 hours by air to nearly 90% of the industrialized world. For this reason Anchorage is a common refueling stop for many international passenger flights and is home to a major FedEx Hub which the company calls a "critical part" of its global network of services.
The song is about the narrator named Chel finally taking time out to write to an old friend, who has moved from Texas to Anchorage, and her friend's reply. In her reply, her friend realizes she might have become a housewife "anchored down in Anchorage", although still dreaming about being a "skateboard punk rocker in New York". She tells Chel that her husband Leroy "says send a picture, hello and to keep on rocking".
Much of the song's lyrics were taken directly from a letter from JoAnn Kelli Bingham, a Comanche Indian and recently married friend who had recently moved to geographically remote Alaska. Her husband is Leroy Bingham, a Blackfeet Indian who worked for Cook Inlet Tribal Council.
Since the adoption of pinyin in the People's Republic of China in the mid-20th century, "Huangpu" has largely replaced "Whampoa" in mainland China except for a few historical establishments:
Whampoa Station is the under-construction terminus station on the Kwun TongLine of the MTR in Hong Kong. It is located within the developed area of Whampoa Garden immediately adjacent to the stern of The Whampoa which is a symbol of identity for the area and its history. The station will consist of a platform tunnel between two separate concourses and will be mainly underground except for the entrances and ventilation shafts. The West Concourse will be located at the junction of Hung Hom Road and Tak Man Street while the East Concourse will be located along Tak On Street and be crossed by Shung King and Tak Ting Streets.
The station was originally due to be open in 2015, but due to the station having technical problems underground, the MTRC has pushed the opening date to mid-2016.
Below the underground concourses only one side platform will be built, similar to the structure found in Po Lam Station. Due to the expected lower traffic demand within its service area, half of the Kwun Tong Line trains may terminate at preceding Ho Man Tin Station rather than this station, approximately 4 minutes per train during rush hour.
