A magistrates' court is a lower court where, in most jurisdictions, all criminal proceedings start. Also some civil matters may be dealt with here, such as family proceedings.
The magistrates' court is the generic name given to a lower court constituted by magistrates and justices of the peace in the Northern Territory, a territory of Australia. There is no actual magistrates court, and the reference to the court is usually a reference to the building. The magistrates court are the first tier in the Northern Territorian court system. The magistrates also have jurisdiction to hear matters in a number of other courts, such as the Juvenile Court, the Family Matters Court, Local Court, Small Claims Court and the Work Health Court.
Constitution
Magistrates courts can be constituted by a stipendiary magistrate or by justices of the peace. The Administrator of the Northern Territory may appoint stipendiary magistrates under the Magistrates Act (NT). The administrator may also appoint a Chief Stipendiary Magistrate and Deputy Chief Stipendiary Magistrates. A stipendiary magistrate receives payment by way of a salary for performing those duties.
The District Courts of New Zealand (Māori: Ngā Kōti ā Rōhe) are New Zealand's main trial courts. The District Courts can hear civil claims up to $200,000 ($500,000 if recovery of land is claimed) and most criminal cases. There are 66 District Courts throughout New Zealand and the vast majority of both civil and criminal actions in New Zealand are commenced in a District Court. The District Courts are governed by the District Courts Act 1947 (formerly titled the Magistrates' Courts Act 1947) as well as the District Court Rules which are periodically revised by the Rules Committee (last revised 2014).
The District Courts were established in 1980 to replace Magistrates Courts, which had dealt with minor criminal matters and civil claims since 1893. The establishment of the District Courts was the result of the recommendations made in the 1978 Royal Commission on the Courts. report. District Courts were given an expanded jurisdiction and the Family Court was created as a division of the District Court in 1981.

This appeal considered whether one party in extradition proceedings can rely substantively on evidence not disclosed to the other. The appellants are the subject of an extradition request issued by the Government of Rwanda. During their extradition proceedings they sought to adduce evidence from witnesses who, asserting that they feared for their safety, were not willing to give evidence if that evidence was disclosed to the Government of Rwanda. The appellants submitted that the judge should devise a common law procedure to permit her to take the evidence on which they wished to rely into account without it being disclosed to the Government of Rwanda. In each case, the District Judge held that she had no power to receive material in private. The subsequent judicial review claim was unsuccessful.
The Supreme Court dismisses the appeal by a majority.

92 year old man surrounded and unlawfully arrested for being outside the Westminster Magistrates' Court on 6th Jan 2021, while waiting for the verdict on Julian Assange's bail appeal. Is this man not old enough to make his own decision on whether or not he wants to risk being out? Who, exactly, is being protected?

Bex Simon Westminster Magistrates Court public art
The making of 40 meters of sculptural metalwork public art for the Ministry of Justice Westminster Magistrates Court in Marylebone London, England, using forgework, repousse, fabrication, copper, steel, stainless steel, laser cutting, acrylic, anodized aluminium, using techniques such as punching, riveting, welding and many other techniques.
The artwork describes the history of the site where the Westminster Magistrates Court now stands, over a 400 year timeline.
The music in this production was commissioned as a bespoke piece for this film. Ben McCusker came to the workshop to record the sounds of the workshop and then wrote the music around Bex's brief, to encapsulate the tradition of the craft juxtaposed by the modern design and techniques involved in the artwork. Listen thorugh headphones to take in the full sounds of the workshop built into the music.

On appeal from the High Court (England and Wales) (Administrative Division)
Giving Evidence in Court is a 7 part series which follows new officer Holmes as she prepares to give evidence in court for the first time.

92 year old man surrounded and unlawfully arrested for being outside the Westminster Magistrates' Court on 6th Jan 2021, while waiting for the verdict on Julian Assange's bail appeal. Isn't the idea behind social distancing and lockdown to protect our most vulnerable from 'asymptomatic spread'?
