Anthony Dominick "Tony" Benedetto (born August 3, 1926), better known by his stage name Tony Bennett, is an American singer of traditional pop standards, big band, show tunes, and jazz. He is also a painter, having created works under the name Anthony Benedetto that are on permanent public display in several institutions. He is the founder of the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Astoria, Queens, New York.
Born and raised in Astoria to an Italian-American family, Bennett began singing at an early age. He fought in the final stages of World War II as a U.S. Army infantryman in the European Theater. Afterward, he developed his singing technique, signed with Columbia Records and had his first number-one popular song with "Because of You" in 1951. Several top hits such as "Rags to Riches" followed in the early 1950s. He then refined his approach to encompass jazz singing. He reached an artistic peak in the late 1950s with albums such as The Beat of My Heart and Basie Swings, Bennett Sings. In 1962, Bennett recorded his signature song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco". His career and his personal life experienced an extended downturn during the height of the rock music era.
Tony Bennett is an English academic who has also worked in Australia. Bennett is an important figure in the development of the Australian approach to cultural studies known as "cultural policy studies."
His works include The Birth of the Museum, a study of the birth and cultural function of the modern museum, and Outside Literature. He is professor of sociology at the Open University in the UK, and Director of the Economic and Social Science Research Centre on Socio-Cultural Change.
Tony Bennett is Visiting Research Professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences and an associate member of CRESC, the ESRC Centre for Research on Socio-cultural Change. Professor Bennett was the Professor of Sociology at The Open University from 1998 to 2009, and a Founding Director of CRESC, before leaving to take up his current position as Research Professor in Social and Cultural Theory in the Centre for Cultural Research at the University of Western Sydney. He also worked at The Open University in the 1970s and early 1980s, initially as a Staff Tutor in Sociology and subsequently as Chair of the Popular Culture course before leaving for Griffith University where he was Professor of Cultural Studies and also served as Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Director of the ARC Key Centre for Cultural and Media Policy. He is a member of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
Tony Bennett (born August 22, 1984) is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Windsor Express of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL). He was part of an Express team that won the championship in 2014–15. Bennett was a Premier Basketball League All-Star in 2010 and an Independent Basketball Association All-Star in 2012. He played college basketball for the Bradley Braves and led them to a Sweet 16 appearance in the 2006 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. Prior to that, Bennett attended George Westinghouse College Prep in Chicago, Illinois.
On May 8, 2015, Bennett was suspended indefinitely from the Windsor Express and the National Basketball League of Canada following a pre-game altercation in the 2015 NBL Canada Finals, after which the Halifax Rainmen forfeited Game 7. His team was awarded the championship, but his head coach Bill Jones received a one-year suspension and a $4,000 fine. Even more suspensions were faced by the Rainmen, including those of Kevin Young and Cliff Clinkscales.
"Waltz for Debby" is a jazz standard composed by Bill Evans. A piano trio jazz waltz, it was first recorded on Evans's 1956 album New Jazz Conceptions (by unaccompanied piano), and on his 1961 live album Waltz for Debby. It has been recorded by many artists, both as an instrumental and as a vocal piece. The song's lyrics were written by Gene Lees.
"Debby" in the song title refers to Evans' niece, Debby Evans.
The song is also known in Swedish by the name "Monicas Vals", with lyrics by Beppe Wolgers, and in Finnish by the name "Ankin Valssi", with lyrics by Jukka Kuoppamäki.
On New Jazz Conceptions (1956):
On Waltz for Debby (1961):
William John "Bill" Evans (pronunciation: /ˈɛvəns/, August 16, 1929 – September 15, 1980) was an American jazz pianist and composer who mostly worked in a trio setting. Evans' use of impressionist harmony, inventive interpretation of traditional jazz repertoire, block chords, and trademark rhythmically independent, "singing" melodic lines continue to influence jazz pianists today.
Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, he was classically trained, and studied at Southeastern Louisiana University. In 1955, he moved to New York, where he worked with bandleader and theorist George Russell. In 1958, Evans joined Miles Davis's sextet, where he was to have a profound influence. In 1959, the band, then immersed in modal jazz, recorded Kind of Blue, the best-selling jazz album of all time.
In late 1959, Evans left the Miles Davis band and began his career as a leader with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian, a group now regarded as a seminal modern jazz trio. In 1961, ten days after recording the highly acclaimed Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby, LaFaro died in a car accident. After months of seclusion, Evans re-emerged with a new trio, featuring bassist Chuck Israels.
William Lawrence Evans (March 25, 1919 – November 30, 1983) was a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball who played for the Chicago White Sox (1949) and Boston Red Sox (1951). Listed at 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m), 180 lb., Evans batted and threw right-handed. He was born in Quanah, Texas.
In a two-season Major League career, Evans posted a 0–1 record with a 4.36 ERA in 13 appearances, including five games finished, four strikeouts, 16 walks, and 21⅔ innings pitched. In 12 seasons in minor league baseball, he worked in 386 games and compiled a 128–127 (.502) mark, retiring after the 1955 season.
Evans served in the US Army in World War II as an infantry man, eventually earning the Bronze Star Medal and Silver Stars.
Evans died in Grand Junction, Colorado, at age 64.
William D. "Bill" Evans (born February 9, 1958 in Clarendon Hills, Illinois) is an American jazz saxophonist. His father was a classical piano prodigy and until junior high school Evans studied classical clarinet. Early in his studies he was able to hear such artists as Sonny Stitt and Stan Getz live at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago. He attended Hinsdale Central High School and studied with tenor saxophonist Vince Micko. His stylistic influences are wide ranging and include players such as Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Steve Grossman, and Dave Liebman. He has stated that although he never transcribed solos, he was able to get a very deep intuitive feel and understanding of each of these players' styles.
He plays primarily tenor and soprano saxophones. Evans attended University of North Texas and William Paterson University, where he studied with Dave Liebman, a Miles Davis alumnus. Moving to NYC in 1979 he spent countless hours in lofts playing jazz standards and perfecting his improvisational style. At the age of 22 he joined Miles Davis and was part of his musical comeback in the early to mid-1980s. Notable albums recorded with Miles include The Man With The Horn, We Want Miles, Star People, and Decoy. In addition he has played, toured and recorded with artists such as Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin,Michael Franks, Willie Nelson, Mick Jagger, Les McCann, Mark Egan, Danny Gottlieb, Ian Anderson, Randy Brecker, The Allman Brothers Band, and Medeski, Martin, and Wood among others. He is featured on the Petite Blonde album with Victor Bailey, Dennis Chambers, Mitch Forman, and Chuck Loeb. Two of his most recent albums Soul Insider and Soulgrass were nominated for Grammy awards. Soulgrass was a ground breaking bluegrass/jazz fusion concept involving such musicians as Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Bruce Hornsby, and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta.

"The Work of Culture Concepts: Culture as a Way of Life". Lecture presented by Professor Tony Bennett. III Lisbon Summer School for the Study of Culture. 2013.
Professor Tony Bennett is interviewed by Professor Luísa Leal de Faria
Amy Loo and Anjali Shiyamsaran discuss the article, "The Political Rationality of Museums" by Tony Bennett.
Terry Smith (ENG) | Why Collect Now? If So, How? | What Do Museums Collect? (6-2) MMCA's International Symposium "What Do Museums Collect?" National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, Multi-Project Hall June 28 (Fri), 2019, 1:00-6:20 p.m. June 29 (Sat), 2019, 1:00-6:00 p.m. What Do Museums Collect? focuses on two points regarding the direction of collection in contemporary art museums. The first is on 'the others' that belong to different racial, ethnic or cultural groups, at times marginalized. The second is on the diverse issues which emerge along with the 'changes of contemporary art media and forms.' *Symposium Day 1 1) Tony Bennett (Research Professor in Social and Cultural Theory in the Institute for Culture and Society at Western Sydney University) “Re-collecting, Re-c...
Recorded on 18th April 2018 This event will consider the prospects for contemporary thinking within the cultural studies tradition to engage with current inequalities. Mindful of the historical importance of this tradition, dating back to the 1960s and including work by Richard Hoggart, Raymond Williams, Stuart Hall, feminist cultural theory, and Bourdieu, the panel will both take stock of these older perspectives and offer their thoughts on contemporary prospects. Tony Bennett is Research Professor in Social and Cultural Theory in the Institute for Culture and Society at Western Sydney University. Angela McRobbie is Professor of Communications at Goldsmiths University of London. She has recently elected Fellow of the British Academy. Her early work was carried out at Birmingham Centr...

Psychiatrist Ben Sobel is dealing with his own problems: his son from his first marriage listens to his sessions, his patients are not challenging enough, and his wedding to Laura MacNamara is coming soon. After discussing the social contract and the balance of "Freedom From/Freedom To" Ryder looks at another form of social power dynamics that stem from ideological prison design, grow into institutional and workplace behavior modification, and eventually spread to the public internalizing self discipline and punishment, and participating not only in surveilling other citizens, but directing their gaze and attention to re-affirm and verify the authority of the state. This episode introduces Jeremy Benthem's prison design, a limited version of Michel Foucault's ideas from both Discipline & Punish and Power/Knowledge texts, as well as a brief extrapolation of Tony Bennett's "exhibitionary control." He is also a painter, having created works under the name Anthony Benedetto that are on permanent public display in several institutions.
