Walter Ferguson Smith, OBE (born 24 February 1948) is a Scottishfootball player, manager and director. He is primarily associated with his two spells in charge of Scottish club Rangers.
Smith had an unremarkable playing career, consisting of two spells with Dundee United which was split by a short time at Dumbarton. A pelvic injury meant he moved into coaching at Dundee United, working for manager Jim McLean, while he also took charge of the Scotland under-18 and under-21 teams. Smith was assistant to Alex Ferguson at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico after it had been announced that he would be moving to Rangers as assistant to Graeme Souness.
Smith became the manager of Rangers in 1991, succeeding Souness. He won 13 major trophies in seven years, including seven league titles in succession. After leaving Rangers at the end of the 1997–98 season, he was appointed manager of Premier League club Everton. He was in charge at Goodison Park for four seasons before he was sacked in 2002.
Smith was born in Bootle, Lancashire. After an unsuccessful trial with Liverpool in 1907, he played for Southend United and Chester before joining Bury in December 1911. Though his first season ended in relegation from the First Division, Smith stayed another two years, and over his career at Bury he scored at a rate better than one goal every three games. He joined fellow Second Division club Birmingham towards the end of the 1913–14 season. The club were looking for a creative player to supply chances for Andy Smith and Jack Hall, but Smith lost out in this role to England international Jimmy Windridge, whose second spell with Birmingham coincided with Smith's arrival. He went on to play for Altrincham during the First World War.
Walter Purvis SmithCBMBEOBE (born March 1920) is an English land surveyor who is notable for being the first civilian Director General of the Ordnance Survey, from 1977 to 1985.
Personal life
Walter Smith was born in Houghton-le-Spring, County Durham (now part of the City of Sunderland), in March 1920 and was educated at state schools in eastern Durham. He studied at St Edmund Hall, Oxford in 1938, but his studies were interrupted by the outbreak of World War II and he left in 1940 with a War Honours Degree. In 1946 he married Bettie Cox, and had two children: Barbara (born 1949) and Geoffrey (born 1952).
Military career
After initial service in the Royal Artillery, Smith joined the Royal Engineers. Following training at Fort Widely, near Portsmouth, he was commissioned in 1941. For the next two years he was engaged mainly on coast defence surveys until, in 1943, he took part in exercises resulting in a whole new mapping of the northern coast of France in preparation for the Normandy landings. For the latter, he was awarded the Commander in Chief’s Certificate. In June 1944 he landed at Arromanches-les-Bains and undertook surveys in support of the artillery. He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) (military) at the end of 1944.
Smith played for Leicester Imperial and Leicester Fosse, before joining Manchester City. He made 22 First Division and two FA Cup appearances in 1906–07. He was then an ever-present in the 44 game 1907–08 campaign, as the "Citizens" finished third in the league, some nine points behind rivalsManchester United. He featured 39 times in the 1908–09 relegation season. He only played three games however, in the 1909–10 campaign, as City won promotion as champions of the Second Division. He then won back his first team place at Hyde Road, playing 33 matches in the 1910–11 season. He featured just 12 times in 1911–12, as he shared goalkeeping duties with Augustus Beeby and Jim Goodchild. He featured just 13 times in the 1912–13 season, as Goodchild established himself as the club's preferred stopper. Smith regained his place in 1913–14, missing just two of City's 44 matches. He played 41 games in 1914–15, in the last season before World War I put a temporary halt to the Football League. He made 13 appearances in the 1915–16, 1916–17, and 1918–19 wartime leagues. He also guested for Fulham and Leicester Fosse during the war. At the end of hostilities, Goodchild became City's number one, and limited Smith to nine appearances in 1919–20.
Walter Alfred Smith (23 February 1913 – 4 October 2007) was an English cricketer active from 1928 to 1946 who played for Leicestershire. He was born in Leicester and died in Bexhill-on-Sea. He appeared in fifteen first-class matches as a righthanded batsman who bowledright arm slow. He scored 754 runs with a highest score of 125* and took three wickets with a best performance of one for 4.

Sir Alex Ferguson and Ally McCoist Pay a Glowing Tribute to Walter Smith
Sir Alex Ferguson and Ally McCoist were among those paying tribute to former Rangers, Scotland and Everton manager Walter Smith at a public memorial service in Glasgow.
Smith was on Ferguson’s coaching teams for a spell at both Manchester United and Scotland while McCoist spent years playing under his mentor before assisting him for both Scotland and Rangers.
A private family funeral was held earlier this month following Smith’s death at the age of 73, but the service at Glasgow Cathedral allowed many football figures to remember their former colleague and opponent.
