The first reference to Bexhill, or Bexelei as it was originally called, was in a charter granted by King Offa of Mercia in 772 AD. It is recorded that King Offa had 'defeated the men of Hastings' in 771 AD.
At this time, the term Hastings would have referred to this whole area rather than the town itself as it does today. In the charter, King Offa established a church and religious community in Bexhill.

Located in the Southeast of England Bexhill is known for its picturesque beaches and historic architecture, it's also my hometown 🙂
Bexhill-on-Sea offers a traditional seaside charm and some of the best sunsets you'll see. It's home to the famous De La Warr Pavilion. The grade 1 listed building has seen many famous artists play at the venue. Bob Marley did his first gig here!

Bexhill-on-Sea is the Birthplace of British Motor Racing, home of the De La Warr Pavilion and Guinness World Record breaker for the largest Charleston dance.
Bob Marley's first ever UK gig was at the De La Warr Pavilion in July 1972. He appeared as support for Johnny Nash in an event organised by Bexhill Lions Club to raise money for the Glyne Gap swimming pool fund. The De La Warr Pavilion re-opened in October 2005 as a national centre for contemporary arts.
The wide-level promenade, gently sloping beach and the expanse of sand at low tide make for an idyllic location for a leisurely evening stroll.
Venturing inland towards the town centre, you'll find independent shops, quality restaurants serving a variety of cuisines, and places to enjoy a quiet drink with friends or family. Bexhill is a superb, self-contained seaside town.
Bexhill Museum
Bexhill Museum re-opened in 2009 after a £2m+ refurbishment. New galleries cover Bexhill's motoring heritage plus costume and social history. The museum was started in 1914 by enthusiasts specialising in natural history, archaeology and ethnography and offers an incredible insight into town history, its famous residents and visitors and historic milestones that have made Bexhill internationally famous.
Bexhill or Bexhill-on-Sea is a seaside town situated in the county of East Sussex in South East England
Bexhill-on-Sea hosted the first British motor race meeting in 1902. This was celebrated each year, until recently, with the Festival of Motoring on the first Bank Holiday in May. Bexhill-on-Sea also became infamous for allowing the first mixed bathing in this country at the turn of the century. Bexhill also has a wealth of cultural, dramatic, operatic, recreational, social and sporting clubs.
Bexhill-on-Sea is the perfect location, being only just over an hour away from the Shuttle, the Channel ferry ports and Gatwick Airport, two hours from London, and 20 minutes from the magnificent Eastbourne Marina.
So you see, Bexhill is much more than it seems. It offers something for everyone - all ages whether they be families, couples or singles. Bexhill on Sea is waiting to be discovered and enjoyed - by you.

Located on the south coast of England, in the county of East Sussex, and around five miles west of Hastings, is the town of Bexhill-on-Sea, commonly referred to as, simply, Bexhill.
The first recorded reference to Bexhill dates all the way back to 772 AD when a charter was granted to 'Bexelai', as it was originally called, by King Offa of Mercia. Offa established a church and religious community in Bexhill at this time. Following the Norman Conquest of 1066, William I granted Bexhill manor to Robert, Count of Eu, as reward for his role in the battle.
For centuries, Bexhill was a small village with manor house owned by various members of the upper classes, as well as Elizabeth I at one point. This all changed during the 19th century with the coming of the railways, and the passing of the male line of the Dukes of Dorset.
In 1846 the railway arrived in Bexhill as part of the Brighton, Lewes and Hastings Railway. Today it is situated on the East Coastway Line between Brighton and Hastings. Rail travel had already helped to transform several coastal fishing villages into seaside resorts by this time. However, Bexhill's growth did not occur in earnest until the second half of the 19th century.
From the 16th century up until the 1860s, Bexhill was owned by the Earls, and later Dukes, of Dorset. In 1865 when the last in the line of the Dukes of Dorset died, the land was inherited by Elizabeth Sackville and her husband, George Sackville-West, 5th Earl De La Warr. Their son, Reginald Sackville, 7th Earl De La Warr, transformed Bexhill into a seaside resort. During his lifetime, De La Warr Parade and the luxury Sackville Hotel were built. In 1884 the suffix 'on-Sea' was added.
After his passing in 1896, the 7th Earl De La Warr transferred control of his estate to his son Gilbert Sackville, Viscount Cantelupe, who became the 8th Earl De La Warr. Gilbert continued where his father left off, developing the pavilion and the seafront buildings.
In 1902 Bexhill-on-Sea was incorporated as a borough under a Royal Charter granted by Edward VII. To celebrate its new status, the 8th Earl organised England's first ever motorcar race, which took place along De La Warr Parade in May 1902.
In 1935 the De La Warr Pavilion was built. Its construction was arranged by Herbrand Edward Dundonald Brassey Sackville, the 9th Earl De La Warr. (try reading that with a straight face!) By the 1970s the pavilion began to show signs of dilapidation. It was granted Grade I listed status in 1986 to safeguard it against certain alterations that had previously been made. In 2004 work began on regenerating the pavilion, and in 2005 it officially reopened as a contemporary arts centre.
Fun fact: De La Warr is a title of British peerage created in 1761, as well as the origin for the name of the American state of Delaware.

Bexhill-on-Sea is a tranquil, seaside town located at the very heart of the district of Rother; a great place to live or visit and dine out. It is regarded as being predominantly a residential town with a visitor element.
I hope you enjoy this walk along Bexhill Beach taking in the beach, the sea, the promenade, Bexhlil Pier and Bexhill Museum and more. If so please subscribe for more walks like this filmed all over the UK and the world!

Kier has been appointed by the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to deliver a new £60m 54-bed acute inpatient mental health hospital in Bexhill as part of its Re-designing Inpatient Services in East Sussex (RIS.ES) Programme.
