Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet, FRSE (15 August 1771 – 21 September 1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet with many contemporary readers in Europe, Australia, and North America.
Although primarily remembered for his extensive literary works and his political engagement, Scott was an advocate, judge and legal administrator by profession, and throughout his career combined his writing and editing work with his daily occupation as Clerk of Session and Sheriff-Depute of Selkirkshire.
A prominent member of the Tory establishment in Edinburgh, Scott was an active member of the Highland Society and served a long term as President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (1820–32).
Walter was born to John and Mary Innes Scott in 1796 in the town of Moffatt, Scotland. His parents, who were members of the Church of Scotland, hoped that he would become a Presbyterianminister. He spent six years at the University of Edinburgh, leaving in 1818. The same year he went to New York at the invitation of his maternal uncle, where he taught languages at a school on Long Island. He soon moved to Pittsburgh, where he was baptized by immersion and became an active member of a small congregation led by a fellow Scotsman named George Forrester. Forrester helped shape Walter's understanding of Christianity, and in particular his belief that immersion was the only appropriate form of baptism.
Scott was born in Stirling, South Australia and played his early football inflated pig’s bladder at school. He took his first job at the age of 13 as an apprentice electrician with the company Morrison and Gwynne. The three senior partners – J. Morrison, G.C. Gwynne and Algie Millhouse – all played for Norwood, and Millhouse had captained the club in 1914. Scott lived in the city during this time, but would return home during the weekends, during which he played for Stirling in the Hills Association until 1919.
His high marking and sound defensive skills immediately drew praise and in his first season he won his new club's best and fairest award.
Walter Aubrey Scott (19 February 1907 – 23 October 1989) was an Australian cricketer who played a single first-class match for Victoria during the 1929–30 season. A right-handed batsman from Melbourne, Scott's sole match at first-class level came against Tasmania in February 1930, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Victoria scored 451 runs in its only innings to win by an innings and 95 runs, with Scott contributing 21 runs opening the batting with the team's captain, Edward Tolhurst. Aged 22 at the time of his debut, he did not play again at first-class level, but played two further matches for Victoria Country—against the touring South Africans during the 1931–32 season and against the touring MCC side the season after. Scott died in October 1989, aged 82.
Walter Scott (1908–?) was a Unionist politician in Northern Ireland.
Scott worked as a building contractor, and was elected to Belfast City Council in 1959, for the Ulster Unionist Party. In 1961, he won a by-election in Belfast Bloomfield and was elected to the Parliament of Northern Ireland, holding his seat at each subsequent election, until the body was prorogued in 1972. From 1969 until 1972, he served as Chairman of Ways and Means and Deputy Speaker. He stood unsuccessfully as a pro-White Paper Unionist candidate in the election to the 1973 Northern Ireland Assembly.
