Vitus Jonassen Bering (baptised 5 August 1681, died 19 December 1741) also known as Ivan Ivanovich Bering was a Danish born explorer in Russian service, and an officer in the Russian Navy. He is known for his two explorations of the north-eastern coast of the Asian continent and from there the western coast on the North American continent. The Bering Strait, the Bering Sea, Bering Island, the Bering Glacier and the Bering Land Bridge have since all been (posthumously) named in his honour.
Only six days after the agreement for the formation of the company was signed between STX Finland Cruise Oy and United Shipbuilding Corporation on 10 December 2010, the newly founded Arctech Helsinki Shipyard received an order for two multipurpose icebreaking supply vessels from the Russian state-owned shipping company Sovcomflot. The value of the shipbuilding contract was US$200 million and the construction of the vessels would provide work for 1,000 man-years. Initially, the ships were to be delivered to the customer together in April 2013, after which they would be used for standby, supply and ice management of Berkut, an offshore platform operated by Exxon Neftegas Limited in the Arkutun-Dagi offshore oil field in the Sea of Okhotsk.
It wasn’t until the 18th century that Russia decided to explore their Pacific coast, sending a Danish explorer to map the furthest reaches of their dominion, and determine whether or not Asia and the Americas were connected. That Danish explorer’s name was very nearly lost to history, and while you might recognize his name today, you probably have never heard his story.

Englishman James Cook believed that he was the first to discover the strait between Asia and America. Until he saw the map of Vitus Bering!
He was born in Denmark, studied in Amsterdam. And all his life he served Russia, having received the rank of captain-commander. Peter I assigned him the task: to find the strait between America and Asia
The journey took two and a half years. But a detailed map of the road to Siberia was compiled. The first marine scientific expedition in the history of Russia was also crowned with success:
Bering compiled an accurate map of the North Pacific.
And he confirmed that the strait between America and Asia exists.
And a new settlement was founded - the future Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Bering later reached Alaska, but on the way back his ship crashed on the rocks. And Bering died in the winter camp.
On the advice of James Cook the strait, the sea and a number of islands were named in honor of Bering.
The clips have been created by the interregional public organization of large families "The Big Family" with the support of the Presidential Grants Fund. The information partner of the project is the Orthodox magazine "Foma".

This video is the first of a two-parter about the exploration of the great steppes and Northern regions of Eurasia and North America as done by the two large steppe and prairie states of Russia and the United States.
This first video will cover the Russian exploration as done by Vitus Bering as this was earlier than the American and brought the Russians all the way to Alaska.
The second video will cover the Lewis and clark expedition to the Oacific coast of the Oregon territory following the Louisiana purchase.
Thus these are the stories of how the Russians and Americans reached the Pacific.
By the early 18th Century following the victory over Sweden in the Great Nordic War by 1721 Russian Zar Peter the Great had achieved acces to the Baltic Sea and thus opened up direct trade with Western Europe.
Russian export trade at the time was heavily dominated by fur, while traditional wheat export to the south was blocked by bad relations with the Ottoman Empire.
Peter the Great wanted to modernize Russia and to do this he needed currency and stability on Russia's Eastern flank.
At the time Siberia was uncharted and he wanted it firmly under Russian control. Both to gain sea ports in the pacific and to acertain whether Sibiria was connected to America as the zar believed, but also to pacify the step herders that continuously threatened Russia's agricultural core.
In 1724 the zar hired the Dane Vitus Bering, who like many other foreigners was employed in the Russian navy, to lead the first expedition through Siberia.
His order was to journey to Kamtjatka in Eastern Siberia and built ships there to sail North to determine whether Asia and America were connected.
A simple order but the execution was far from simple.

Vitus Jonassen Bering (baptised 5 August 1681, died 19 December 1741), also known as Ivan Ivanovich Bering, was a Danish cartographer and explorer in Russian service, and an officer in the Russian Navy. He is known as a leader of two Russian expeditions, namely the First Kamchatka Expedition and the Great Northern Expedition, exploring the north-eastern coast of the Asian continent and from there the western coast on the North American continent. The Bering Strait, the Bering Sea, Bering Island, the Bering Glacier and the Bering Land Bridge were all named in his honor.

Vitus Jonassen Bering, or as he is commonly known, Vitus Bering, was born in Horsens, Denmark in the year 1681. Bering died in 1741 during his return from his second expedition.
It was Bering's exploration of Alaska and the discovery of the now known as Bering Strait which paved way for the Russian empire to get a foothold on the Northern American coast. Vitus Jonassen Bering is most notably known for being the leader of two major exploratory expeditions which eventually led to the discovery of North America's western coast, Alaska, and the northeastern coast of Asia. Prior to being appointed as the person in charge of these two expeditions, Vitus Bering had served in the Russian navy but had later resigned. Both of Bering's voyages provided great information and strategic leverage to the Russian empire, and Vitus Bering was greatly rewarded for this.

Coolest fact that didn't make the video: bronze artifacts from Asia have been discovered buried on the Alaskan side of the strait from over a thousand years ago! Unfortunately, the pictures are copyrighted so I couldn't show them here, but here is a link to the story: http://instaar.colorado.edu/news-events/instaar-news/john-hoffeckers-team-unearths-first-prehistoric-cast-bronze-artifact-found/
