Vitamin D also plays a role in regulating the immune system, supporting brain function, and reducing inflammation in the body. In addition, some studies suggest that adequate levels of vitamin D may help protect against certain diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis.

Daily oral dosing of vitamin D3 using 5000 TO 50,000 international units a day in long-term hospitalized patients:
Insights from a seven year experience
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30611908/
Dayton and Cincinnati, Ohio
Vitamin D3 is a hormone produced in the skin,
in amounts estimated up to 25,000 international units (IUs) a day,
by the action of UVB radiation
Vitamin D deficiency is common,
lack of adequate sun exposure to the skin,
vitamin D is present in very few food sources.
Deficiency is strongly linked to increased risk for a multitude of diseases,
several of which have historically been shown to improve dramatically with either adequate UVB exposure to the skin,
or to oral supplementation with vitamin D.
These diseases include
Asthma, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, rickets and tuberculosis.
All patients in our hospital have been routinely screened on admission for vitamin D deficiency since July 2011
Offered supplementation to either correct or prevent deficiency
We have admitted over 4,700 patients
(vast majority agreed to supplementation)
5000 or 10,000 IUs/day.
125 micrograms or 250 micrograms
Due to disease concerns,
A few agreed to 20,000 to 50,000 IUs/day.
500 micrograms to 1, 250 micrograms (1.25mg)
There have been no cases of vitamin D3 induced hypercalcemia,
or any adverse events attributable to vitamin D3
Three patients with psoriasis
Marked clinical improvement using 20,000 to 50,000 IUs/day
Analysis of 418 inpatients on D3
Long enough to develop 25OHD3 blood levels less than 74.4 ng/ml,
showed a mean 25OHD3 level of 118.9 ng/ml
(range from 74.4 to 384.8 ng/ml)
Average serum calcium level in the vit D group of 418
9.6 mg/dl
Range of 8.6 to 10.7
(Normal 8.5 to 10.5)
Average serum calcium level in the non vit D group of 777
Mean 25OHD3 level of 27.1 ng/ml
9.5 mg/dl
Range of 8.4 to 10.7
Parathyroid hormone levels
A hormone released in response to low calcium levels
D3 users, 24.2 pg/ml
Non D3 users, 30.2 pg/ml
In summary
Long-term supplementation with vitamin D3 in doses ranging from 5000 to 50,000 IUs/day appears to be safe.
Conclusion
Daily oral intake of vitamin D3 ranging from 5000 IU/d to 60,000 IU/d for several years was well tolerated and safe,
in both our patients and staff.
The mean 25OHD blood levels in our patients appear to take around 12 months to plateau on 5000 IU/d and 10,000 IU/d.
The average 25OHD values
Patients taking 10,000 IU/d at 12 months = 96 ng/ml
Then retested at 16 months = 97 ng/ml
Currently considered upper limit of normal, 100 ng/ml

Vitamin D Deficiency | Vitamin D Deficiency Symptoms | Vitamin D Deficiency Rickets | Osteomalacia | vitamin d deficiency and hair loss | Osteoporosis
One in every 3 people have vitamin D deficiency. This is because vitamin d is an essential nutrient for our body which is necessary for bone formation, muscle contraction, & to maintain a healthy immune function.
Signs and Symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency:
Frequent illness or infections: Vitamin D helps in fighting off infections as it is directly involved in supporting immune cells. So when there is deficiency of vitamin D, your immunity decreases and you start falling ill frequently. You may catch flu and cold like symptoms very often. This can certainly be sign that your vitamin d level is low.
Fatigue & tiredness
You can feel tired due to many causes, one of it can be vitamin D deficiency. According to few studies fatigue and tiredness were attributed mainly to vitamin D deficiency.
Fatigue & tiredness can be due to many other reasons so if you are feeling tired from long time then watch for the other symptoms.
Bone & back pain
Vitamin D helps in strengthening and maintain bone health by absorbing calcium. So when there is low level of vitamin D there is less absorption of calcium which may lead to series of events that may ultimately cause bone & back pain.
Depression
Some studies have linked low levels of vitamin D to depression especially in older people. But still more research is needed to understand this relation.
Impaired wound healing
Slow wound healing after surgery or injury may be a sign that your vitamin D levels are too low. As vitamin D plays an important role in controlling the swelling and addressing the infection for proper healing.
Bone loss
Vitamin D is necessary for calcium absorption from our gut. As you know calcium is necessary for bone formation. If there is not enough vitamin D available in our body it will reduce the calcium absorption. Which can compromise our bone density and bone strength.
If the deficiency occurs in childhood it can cause rickets and in older individual the bone become soft and the condition is called osteomalacia.
Vitamin D deficiency is also responsible for osteoporosis in which the density of your bone is significantly reduced and your bone can easily fracture by simply falling on the ground.
Hair loss
We all know that Stress is a common cause of hair loss; but even disease or nutrient deficiencies can cause severe hair loss.
And very often Hair loss in women is is linked to low vitamin D levels.
Muscle pain
The causes of muscle pain are often difficult to pinpoint; but many studies have revealed that Vitamin D deficiency is a potential cause of muscle pain. Vitamin D helps nerves to carry messages between the brain and the body. Therefore this vitamin is also involved in your body’s pain signalling pathways which may play a role in chronic pain.
Weight gain
Low vitamin D is linked with both belly fat and increased weight. This effect is more prominently seen in men.
Anxiety
Vitamin D is not believed to affect anxiety directly. Although there are some correlation of Vitamin D deficiency which is linked to anxiety and depression.

Why you need to watch this
If you have watched and enjoyed the incredible Dr John Campbell on YouTube and his insights into vitamin D, then you need to watch this interview. Dilly from the NH team fills in the gaps, answering how to optimise vitamin D levels correctly using rapid vitamin D testing and supplementation. In this interview, they deep dive into why you should be taking vitamin D and the controversies that have prevented correct vitamin D supplementation. Dilly goes a step further and explains how vitamin D works in the body; he talks about the different active forms of cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), calcifediol as vitamin D3, and calcitriol.
However, the biggest takeaway is not only the need to test before supplementing with Vitamin D but the half-lives of the different forms of vitamin D. Dilly explains why you should be taking Vitamin D DAILY! And the impact it will have on your health.

Vitamin D is important for several reasons. It helps the body absorb and use calcium and phosphorus, which are essential for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth. Vitamin D also plays a role in regulating the immune system, supporting brain function, and reducing inflammation in the body. In addition, some studies suggest that adequate levels of vitamin D may help protect against certain diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis.
