093 Keyword Disambiguation Using Transformers and Clustering to Build Cleaner Knowledge - NODES2022
Natural language processing is an indispensable toolkit to build knowledge graphs from unstructured data. However, it comes with a price. Keywords and entities in unstructured texts are ambiguous - the same concept can be expressed by many different linguistic variations. The resulting knowledge graph would thus be polluted with many nodes representing the same entity without any order. In this session, we show how the semantic similarity based on transformer embeddings and agglomerative clustering can help in the domain of academic disciplines and research fields and how Neo4j improves the browsing experience of this knowledge graph.

Zangwill Talk by Prof David Bannerman "Hippocampal LTP and Psychiatry: The Prime Suspect"
Professor David Bannerman (University of Oxford)
Friday 15th October 2021
Abstract:
It is nearly 50 years since Bliss and Lomo first reported the long-lasting potentiation of synaptic transmission in the hippocampus (now long-term potentiation; LTP ). Subsequently, deficits in hippocampal synaptic plasticity has been implicated in various psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, depression and Alzheimer’s Disease. Hippocampal LTP has become one of the most widely studied phenomena in neuroscience, and enormous resources have been poured into research efforts to develop treatment strategies for these disorders that target hippocampal LTP but with limited success. This failure, at least in part, reflects a lack of understanding as to the precise psychological sequelae of hippocampal ...

This failure, at least in part, reflects a lack of understanding as to the precise psychological sequelae of hippocampal LTP . The idea that hippocampal LTP provides the neural substrate for the formation of associative memories has predominated in neuroscience text books, although the empirical support for this hypothesis is limited at best. Here we provide an alternative account of the role of hippocampal synaptic plasticity in the priming of memories. This account can explain why deficits in hippocampal synaptic plasticity can lead to deficits in episodic memory retrieval in some cases, but psychosis in disorders like schizophrenia in others. It can also potentially account for the learning processes that might underpin the improvement in mood following anti-depressant treatment in patients.

The rate of growth in healthcare costs is not sustainable and increasing cost containment pressure will be brought to bear on the healthcare sector of the US economy. In addition, the advent of large-scale computation, data mining, big data and analytics provides tools for healthcare practitioners, particularly those in laboratory medicine and pathology, to more closely examine patterns of resource use and medical effectiveness of testing. This work will require much better integration of data from clinical, operational, and financial sources. Through the use of integrated medical analytics, one can identify unnecessary testing using literature-based rules for identification of superior tests, testing algorithms, or tests with low diagnostic utility. When combined with financial data, the annual cost of unnecessary testing for just over twenty testing scenarios represents several hundred thousand dollars in variable costs for hospital systems and many millions of dollars in paid out claims for four regional US payers. To make most efficient use of integrated medical analytics, practitioners of the future will also demonstrate value to their healthcare systems through the use of textual disambiguation to structured data forms and big data storage/retrieval as well as knowledge of data governance and data provenance.
