The Philistines in History (who they were and where they came from)
In this quick episode, we take a look at the history of the people known as Philistines, who they were and where they came from. Long cast off as a backward and barbaric people, modern scholarship has revealed that the Philistines were actually a sophisticated civilization with a complex history.

Who were the Philistines?
Few peoples throughout history are simultaneously so totally unknown, and so maligned, as the Philistines - the name alone has become a pejorative byword for an uncultured individual. We mostly know of the Philistines from the Bible, where they are the enemies of the people of Israel.
At the same time, the Philistines leave us very little in the historical record by which we can discern what their culture may have been like, a fact which itself has perhaps accentuated a reliance on biblical sources. We do not know what language the Philistines spoke, what alphabet they used, what their culture held dear; their gods are unclear, and their origins are an enduring mystery.
However, archaeology, in concert with what scant written sources we have, can help us build a clearer picture of this Le...

Who Were the Philistines from the Bible? - (History of the Philistines Explained)
The Philistines were an ancient people whose presence in the biblical narrative significantly influenced the history of the Near East. Their origins are believed to trace back to the Aegean region, possibly originating from the area of the eastern Mediterranean, modern-day Greece. Scholars suggest that they were among the Sea Peoples who migrated to the eastern shores of the Mediterranean around the 12th century BCE.
Geographically, the Philistines settled primarily along the southern coast of ancient Canaan, in a region known as Philistia, which is in present-day southern Israel and the Gaza Strip. They established five major cities: Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, and Gath, each governed by a lord or king. The Philistine cities were strategically located along the Via Maris, an ancient t...

Philistines: Biblical Archaeology
Who were the Philistines? Why would the book of Genesis mention them if they didn't show up until the bronze age collapse? Maybe the word "Philistine" doesn't mean what we think.

ARE BIBLICAL PHILISTINE SAME AS TODAY'S PALESTINE
Philistine and Palestine are often confused, but they refer to different things. Philistine refers to an ancient people who lived in the coastal region of Canaan around the 12th century BCE, known for their conflicts with the Israelites in biblical history. Palestine, on the other hand, is a geographic region in the Middle East, historically referring to the land encompassing modern-day Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza, and it has political and cultural significance today.

Who Were the Philistines?
By the time Genesis was written, the Biblical authors assumed the Philistines had always been in the land, while Israel came from elsewhere. Yet, the Philistines were late-bronze-age invaders from the Aegean who assimilated into Canaanite culture, and Israel had always been there. John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place will look at the archaeological, historical, and biblical accounts to deepen our knowledge of this ancient civilization and their relationship to Israel. Mark your calendar to join the live discussion and to ask questions to our lecturer: Tuesday, September 5, at 7 PM EDT.

The Philistine cities were strategically located along the Via Maris, an ancient trade route connecting Egypt to the northern empires, enabling them to engage in prosperous trade and cultural exchange.
Their distinct culture and military prowess set them apart. Philistine society was marked by a unique material culture, evident in their pottery, architecture, and artifacts. They were renowned for their skilled craftsmanship in pottery, characterized by distinctive ceramic wares decorated with geometric designs and intricate patterns.
The Philistines were also known for their military strength, equipped with advanced weaponry and chariots, which made them formidable adversaries. They clashed frequently with the Israelites, their neighbors to the east, leading to numerous conflicts depicted in the biblical accounts. One of the most famous biblical tales involving the Philistines is the story of David and Goliath, illustrating the clash between the Israelites and the Philistines.
Religiously, the Philistines followed a polytheistic belief system, worshipping deities such as Dagon, the god of fertility and agriculture, and Astarte, the goddess of love and war. Archaeological findings, such as temples and artifacts, provide insights into their religious practices, which often involved rituals, sacrifices, and ceremonies to appease their gods.
The Philistines’ interactions with the Israelites were complex and multifaceted, marked by periods of both conflict and coexistence. These interactions left a lasting impact on the cultural, religious, and historical development of the region.
Despite their strong presence in the biblical narrative, the historical records about the Philistines remain somewhat limited. Much of what is known about them comes from ancient texts, primarily from the Hebrew Bible, which provides a perspective that often portrays them as adversaries of the Israelites.
The decline of the Philistine culture began around the 7th century BCE, attributed to a combination of factors, including conflicts with Assyrian and Babylonian powers, leading to their eventual assimilation into surrounding cultures. Their cities were conquered and destroyed, and the Philistine identity gradually faded from historical records.
Nevertheless, the legacy of the Philistines endures through archaeological discoveries, biblical accounts, and the influence they had on the ancient history and cultural landscape of the Near East. They remain an intriguing and significant component of the ancient tapestry of the region, leaving an indelible mark on the historical narrative of the biblical world.

The immigrants created social integration in the city, without losing the special identity of the communities they came from.
About 90 percent of Ashdod's residents are Jewish. The distribution of religious identity in the city indicates that Ashdod has a majority of religiously affiliated residents.
There is a developed trade in Ashdod that includes large markets, shopping malls, power centers, supermarkets and factory stores scattered throughout the city and in the industrial areas. Each district has its own small trading centers called "centers".
There are three large shopping malls in the city - near the city hall, the City shopping mall opened in 1997 and which includes Ashdod's central station,
and the "Sea Mall" mall that opened in 2003 and has international fashion chains, restaurants and a cinema.
In 2015, one of the largest shopping centers in Israel was opened, Big FASHION Ashdod, located near the southern exit of the city and the train station, with about 120 fashion chains, restaurants and cafes, and a complex of cinemas from the Cinema City chain.
North of District B operates one of the largest power centers in Israel called Star Center, which is divided into two complexes containing about 100 shops, cafes and restaurants, a gym with a rooftop pool and an office building. In 2012, an open commercial complex called "Gan Ha'ir" was opened adjacent to the City Mall, and similar to the complex in Tel Aviv, it contains mainly fashion stores, cafes and restaurants, with an office tower above it.
