How to Make a Historic Building Energy Efficient: A Tour of Holyrood Lodge, Edinburgh
How can we make historic buildings energy efficient? Join us for a tour of the B-listed, historic Holyrood Park lodge to find out.
The Lodge itself was built in 1857 as part of Prince Albert’s vision for Holyrood Park. It was originally built for park keepers however it has been used as a cottage in the past and is now our much-loved Visitor Centre.
Our Technical Research team transformed the lodge from Energy Performance Certificate Band F to Band C, all the while protecting its special historic character.
The tour includes a detailed explanation of the upgrade works.

Modern Extension to Grade II Listed Building
EP Architects were approached following two previous planning refusals, for extensions to this beautiful Grade II listed property.
Working closely with the LPA, in two stages of pre-application advice, it was agreed that a modern design was the best solution. The enlargement of an existing dormer was also approved.
EP Architects have created a light airy modern space for our clients, while providing wide open views of the beautiful Kent landscape. This modern extension sits alongside the listed building, with a lightweight glass link gently kissing up to the house. This new structure benefits from a highly insulated design and efficient underfloor heating.

New windows for listed buildings - what are my options?
In this video we look at why you should consider installing heritage windows in your listed building.
If you own or are renovating a listed building or one that is in a conservation area, then you can’t just replace the windows for anything. Firstly, you need planning permission to replace the windows. Secondly, the windows must be approved by the local planning authority.
Getting permission from the planning department for new windows means installing units that are as close to the original units as possible.
With older buildings, this generally means single glazed sash or casement windows.

Many property owners don’t want cold and draught single glazed windows. They are usually upgrading their windows because they want warmer rooms and lower heating bills - the benefits you get from having double glazed windows.
Unfortunately, standard double glazed windows will look totally out of place in most listed properties - so what are the options?
Heritage windows have all the benefits of super efficient double glazed windows but with the help of ultra-slim vacuum glazing look very much like single pane windows.
For more information on installing authentic looking windows in a listed building, visit:
