King Louis XIV of France | The Sun King (Versailles)
"I know who I am. I am Louis XIV, and I am the King of France."
During the second half of the 17th century, King Louis XIV was a very powerful man who built and extended upon his father's old hunting lodge called Versailles. Believing in divine rights and his kingship to be destined by God (like most monarchs during that period *cough* Charles I of England), this made Louis XIV very ambitious and therefore dangerous. Inviting all the nobles of France, he created a mini world, a kingdom within a kingdom. In Versailles, everyone had to abide by his rules and attend certain events in a certain way at a specific time. Feeling almost like a prison I imagine. Why Equestrian at Versailles is a Must-See Event
The Sports Professor Rick Horrow breaks down the history of the landmark Palace of Versailles, where the equestrian events are being held at the 2024 Olympics!
The History and Modern Role of the Palace of Versailles:
The Palace of Versailles, initially a hunting lodge built by Louis XIII in 1623, transformed into a symbol of absolute monarchy under his son, Louis XIV. The Sun King expanded it into a magnificent palace, relocating the royal court and government there in 1682. Versailles became the epicenter of political power in France until the French Revolution in 1789, when the monarchy was overthrown. The palace is renowned for its opulent architecture, elaborate gardens, and the Hall of Mirrors, where the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919, ending World War I.

Versailles is still one of the most beautifully built places on Earth and I will end up going there one day! This TV show was a really great series and I was gutted it ended the way it did. George Blagden is outstanding in this role, as is Alexander Vlahos who plays his brother Phillipe. I also thought George was brilliant as Athelstan in Vikings prior to this role.

Following the revolution, Versailles fell into disrepair but was later restored and turned into a museum of French history by Louis-Philippe in the 19th century. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting millions of visitors annually who come to marvel at its grandeur and historical significance.
In 2024, the Palace of Versailles will serve a new and unique role as a venue for the Olympic Games. The equestrian events will be held in the palace's scenic grounds, providing a stunning backdrop that blends historical elegance with modern athleticism. This marks a significant moment in the palace's history, as it hosts an event that brings together global cultures and celebrates human achievement in the realm of sports. By integrating such a historic site into the Olympic Games, organizers aim to highlight France's rich cultural heritage while offering a visually captivating experience for both athletes and spectators.
