Why Political Freedom and Prosperity Go Hand in Hand | The Human Prosperity Project
Socialism’s failure to protect political and economic freedoms has repeatedly led to some of humanity’s worst catastrophes. North Korea’s socialism is an illustrative example of the effects of state control. History shows us that political and economic freedom is the foundation for enduringly successful nations.

While the term freedom is constantly evoked in political discussions, it is incredibly difficult to define. We will discuss some different and conflicting views of writers such as Plato, John Locke, Jean- Jacques Rousseau, Hegel, and the founding fathers of the American constitution.
We will also find some of these views embedded in fiction, including Erich Fromms Escape from Freedom, Arthur Millers Death of a Salesman, and Aldous Huxleys Brave New World.

Sixty second philosophy: Kant and political freedom
We’re talking about Kant’s conception of political freedom. Is it ironic? You decide!
I think I have mild Stockholm Syndrome when it comes to Kant. I’ve just written so many papers on him that it was inevitable. While I don’t agree with him on many things, I do have a soft spot for him - especially his absurd rules for how to host a dinner party. Yes, I’ve always wanted to host a Kantian dinner party, and yes, I will outline what the hell a Kantian dinner party even entails, so you too can host one (post pandemic, of course)!

Freedom of Speech: Crash Course Government and Politics #25
Today, FINALLY, Craig is going to talk about Free Speech! Now, free speech is so important because it not only allows you to critique the government, but it also protects you from the government. But it's essential to remember that not ALL speech is protected equally under the First Amendment, and just because you have a right to free speech doesn't mean your employer, for instance, can't fire you for something you say (unless your work for the government and then things get a bit more complicated). So we'll take a look at a couple significant Supreme Court cases that have gotten us to our current definition of free speech, and we'll also discuss some of the more controversial aspects of free speech - like hate speech.

Anyways, let’s dig into some Kant, shall we?
Kant has three conceptions of freedom (I’m pretty sure it’s just 3, but don’t quote me - remember, I don’t actually know anything). To have political freedom, we do need transcendental freedom. Transcendental freedom is the metaphysical type of freedom that you’re referring to when you’re asking the overall question of free will, and whether or not it exists. So let’s just assume for a minute that transcendental freedom exists, cool? Cool.
So what’s it about? Political freedom is about other people infringing on our freedoms rather than the nature of the world or whatever infringing on us. Kant claims that the state should not be an impediment to freedom, but a means to freedom that removes the evil or whatever that is preventing the freedoms of all the good folks who are not infringing on the freedoms of others.
Hmm, that sure does sound great in theory, doesn’t it?
