The island was first explored by Europeans when British and Spanish expeditions arrived in the late 18th century. It was originally named Quadra's and Vancouver's Island in commemoration of the friendly negotiations held by Spanish commander of the Nootka Sound settlement, Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra, and by British naval captain George Vancouver in Nootka Sound in 1792, to find a solution to the Nootka Crisis. Quadra's name was eventually dropped and it has since been known solely as Vancouver Island. It is one of several North American locations named after George Vancouver, the British Royal Navy officer who explored the Pacific Northwest coast of North America between 1791 and 1794.
Along with most of the southern Gulf Islands, plus various minor islands offshore from its southern end, the southern part of Vancouver Island is the only part of British Columbia (and of Western Canada) that lies south of the 49th Parallel. The area has one of the warmest climates in Canada and since the mid-1990s has been mild enough in a few areas to grow subtropical Mediterranean crops such as olives and lemons.
All Vancouver Island ridings other than those immediately in and around Victoria are descended from the original Vancouver Island riding, which existed only as a temporary measure from the province's joining confederation in 1871 until elections with legally-mandated electoral districts was held the following year. At that time the Vancouver Island riding was renamed simply Vancouver and its counterpart Victoria District was renamed Victoria.
British Columbia, also commonly referred to by its initials BC, is a province located on the west coast of Canada. British Columbia is also a component of the Pacific Northwest and the Cascadia bioregion, along with the US states of Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Alaska The province's name was chosen in 1858 by members of the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1871, it became the sixth province of Canada. Its Latin motto is Splendor sine occasu ("Splendour without Diminishment").
British Columbia wine is Canadian wine produced in the province of British Columbia. Wines made from 100 percent British Columbia grapes can qualify for classification under one of British Columbia's two classification systems, depending on the varietal, the wine-making techniques employed, and various other restrictions.
Originally, the British Columbia Wine Institute handled regulation and marketing of the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA), which is also an appellation system. More recently, the British Columbia Wine Authority was formed by the provincial government to regulate part of the industry. It created a second classification, "Wines of Distinction", to be also from 100 percent British Columbia grapes, but with less stringent quality control. In practice, it has strengthened the VQA classification.
British Columbia is gaining recognition for its world-class premium VQA wines. Wines which are neither labelled VQA or Wine of Distinction, and from certain producers (given special rights under the 1988 Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement), can use foreign bulk wine to produce a third category of wine which is labelled as Cellared in Canada. Significant parts of the wine industry, and respected wine writers in Canada and abroad, are quite concerned about this practice.
British Columbia (Superintendent of Motor Vehicles) v British Columbia (Council of Human Rights)
British Columbia (Superintendent of Motor Vehicles) v British Columbia (Council of Human Rights), [1999] 3 S.C.R. 868, known as the Grismer Estate case, is a leading Supreme Court of Canada decision on human rights law. The Court held that the British Columbia Superintendent of Motor Vehicles was in violation of the provincial Human Rights Code for cancelling the driver's licence of Terry Grismer because he had a visual disability.
Background
Terry Grismer was a mining truck driver who, after suffering from a stroke in 1984, suffered from homonymous hemianopia (H.H.), a visual disability that reduces the scope of peripheral vision. After the stroke the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles cancelled his driver's licence on the grounds that his condition made him incapable of meeting the minimum standard for peripheral vision required when driving. This rule applied to all people who suffered from H.H.
Vancouver (i/væŋˈkuːvər/ or /vænˈkuːvər/) officially the City of Vancouver, is a coastal seaport city on the mainland of British Columbia, Canada.
The 2011 census recorded 603,502 people in the city, making it the eighth largest Canadian municipality. The Greater Vancouver area of around 2.4 million inhabitants is the third most populous metropolitan area in the country, the second largest city on the United States–Canada border, and the most populous in Western Canada.
Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada; 52% of its residents have a first language other than English. Vancouver is classed as a Beta global city. The City of Vancouver encompasses a land area of about 114 square kilometres, giving it a population density of about 5,249 people per square kilometre (13,590 per square mile). Vancouver is the most densely populated Canadian municipality, and the fourth most densely populated city with over 250,000 residents in North America, behind New York City, San Francisco,
and Mexico City.
Vancouver was a steam-run bark built and operated by the Hudson's Bay Company to serve on the route between London, England and Fort Victoria on Vancouver Island in what is now the province of British Columbia, Canada. Other vessels committed to the route were Columbia and Cowlitz, but Vancouver was the first of the three to enter Victoria harbour, and the first vessel to sail directly from England to enter that port, in 1845. Other vessels in the company's service were Nereid and Cadboro.
Vancouver was 324 tons burthen, and had six guns and a crew of 24 men.

TOFINO | Vancouver Island
Tofino, Vancouver Island is one of my favorite places on the island. It is a 5 hour drive from Victoria and it has so much to offer. In Tofino, you can go whale watching, Bear watching, Visit the Hot Spring Cove by boat or by sea plane. There are so many hikes around the area and of course some of the best surfing in the world! One thing that you cant miss are the fish tacos!
During our time in Tofino, we explored with West Coast Aquatic Safaris. They offer tours every day. This company was amazing and the staff were all great. The boats are great size for anyone looking to get out on the water. It even accommodates wheel chair access.

British Columbia's sea to sky corridor runs from the outskirts of the city of Vancouver to the beautiful snowcapped peaks of Whistler and beyond. It’s a haven for ultimate athletes to go white water kayaking and bungee jumping and there is a legacy of rich natural resources. Some of the earliest towns in British Columbia are located here because of mining, and what was the beginning of a transportation infrastructure that has laid the groundwork for Canada as we know.

The company with all the awesome activites!:

British Columbia (BC) sits between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains and is the westernmost province of Canada. It's known to be the most beautiful and diverse province in the country, ranging from rugged coastlines to immense mountain ranges and lush rainforests full of wildlife. British Columbia is huge! In fact, outside of Alaska, it is larger than any other U.S. state. But despite its physical size, the majority of the Canadian province's population exists within the far southwest corner, mostly within the Vancouver metro area and the province's capital Victoria. This is despite the fact that the province is home to a surprisingly varied geography, including the sunnier, dryer region around Kelowna. So why is the vast majority of British Columbia so empty?

She says she's going back home. Hasn't seen her friends in a while. Plus British Columbia's real nice this time of year. And when she gets there she says that she'll phone. May take a day or so. It always takes longer than you think it will to settle in. And she says: So if I leave on that plane, remember me by our good days. And you don't have to but I'm going to wait. There's something wrong with the dog. She can't stop eating on herself. And the scabs that are under her fur, mean that I've been away too long. And I should really give her away to a good heart, in a better place. I'm going to miss you when you go. You'll do better than this home. Someone to take you on walks, show you off. Before it's too late. At best you'll be blind and gray. A warm climate for your last days. Should have never let her go, but you were always better alone.
