Utica/ˌjuːtɪkə/ is an ancient city located between Carthage in the south and Hippo Diarrhytus (now Bizerte) in the north, near the outflow of the Medjerda River into the Mediterranean Sea. It is traditionally considered to be the first colony to have been founded by the Phoenicians in North Africa. After the defeat of Carthage by Rome, Utica was an important Roman colony for seven centuries. Today, Utica no longer exists, and its remains are located in Bizerte Governorate in Tunisia - not on the coast where it once lay, but further inland because deforestation and agriculture upriver led to massive erosion and the Medjerda River silted over its original mouth.
Utica's beginnings
Utica was founded as a port located on the trade route leading to the Straits of Gibraltar and the Atlantic Ocean, thus facilitating Phoenician trade in the Mediterranean. The name "Utica" is from the Phoenicianˁattiq (identical to modern Arabic ( أُتِيكْ, عُتَيقة) ˁuttayqah and Hebrew עתיק ˁatiq) meaning "old [town]", contrasting with the later colony "Carthage", meaning "new town".
Tunisia (Arabic:تونسTūnis; Berber: ⵜⵓⵏⴻⵙ), officially the Tunisian Republic or the Republic of Tunisia (Arabic:الجمهورية التونسيةal-Jumhūrīya at-Tūnisīya; Berber: ⵜⴰⴳⴷⵓⴷⴰ ⵏ ⵜⵓⵏⴻⵙ) is the northernmost country in Africa, covering 165,000 square kilometres (64,000sqmi). Its northernmost point, Ras ben Sakka, is the northernmost point on the African continent. It is bordered by Algeria to the west, Libya to the southeast, and the Mediterranean Sea to the north and east. As of 2013, its population is estimated at just under 10.8 million. Its name is derived from its capital city, Tunis, which is located on the country's northeast coast.
Geographically, Tunisia contains the eastern end of the Atlas Mountains and the northern reaches of the Sahara desert. Much of the rest of the country's land is fertile soil. Its 1,300 kilometres (810mi) of coastline includes the African conjunction of the western and eastern parts of the Mediterranean Basin and, by means of the Sicilian Strait and Sardinian Channel, features the African mainland's second and third nearest points to Europe after Gibraltar.
Tunisian wine has a long history dating back to the Antiquity like most Mediterranean countries with the Phoenicians and Carthage .
The agronomist Mago that lived in the city of Carthage, wrote a treaty about agronomy and viticulture, from which its techniques are still used until this day. Despite the arrival of a Muslim power since the 7th century AD, viticulture and wine production never quite disappeared from Tunisia.
Rosé wine accounts for a large proportion of the Tunisian production.
Wine production in today's Tunisia was probably introduced by the Phoenicians when Carthage was established. The Carthaginian agronomist Mago wrote on viticulture, and his works, which were later translated from Punic to Latin, were quoted by later Roman writers such as Columella.
The 2004 African Cup of Nations was the 24th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the football championship of Africa (CAF). It was hosted by Tunisia. Just like in 2002, the field of sixteen teams was split into four groups of four. Tunisia won their first title, beating Morocco in the final 2−1.

Tunisia is considered a microcosm of the Mediterranean world. On his journey, Jaafar Abdul Karim has fascinating encounters with all sorts of people, including a male belly dancer and a researcher who interprets the Koran from a female perspective.
Together with the Tunisian belly dancer and choreographer Rochdi Belgasmi, Jaafar Abdul Karim explores the capital’s Medina quarter, discussing masculinity and the stereotypes that exist about it in the Arabic-speaking world.
He also meets Dr. Sellin, a scholar who argues that the role of women in the Koran must be re-examined. In terms of women’s rights, Tunisia is the region’s most liberal country, but reforms are still needed.
Jaafar also meets young Tunisian designers hoping to conquer the international fashion world, and start-up entrepreneurs who solve environmental and sustainability problems in innovative ways.
After visiting a traditional hammam, Jaafar heads to Djerba, the largest island in North Africa. While tourists flock to its coastal resorts, life in the interior is still quite traditional. For example in Erriadh, where he visits the "La Ghriba" synagogue. Just under 2,000 Jews live in Tunisia today, half of them on Djerba.

Early in the morning, locals rush to purchase their favorite bottle of ''legmi'' in Gabès, South of Tunisia.
The delicate drink is made from natural palm tree. Ridha Omrane Moussa owns 25 palm trees and produces 8,000 liters of the drink in a year.
"In the summer of the month, it is fragile because of the heat. The temperature is very high. It is fragile so it can not sit in the heat because it rots and turns into vinegar,'' Moussa said.

Tunisian cuisine or the cuisine of Tunisia, is a blend of Mediterranean and desert dwellers' culinary traditions. Its distinctive spicy fieriness comes from the many civilizations which have ruled the land now known as Tunisia: Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, Spanish, Turkish, Italians (Sicilians), French, and the native Punics-Berber people. Many of the cooking styles and utensils began to take shape when the ancient tribes were nomads. Nomadic people were limited in their cooking implements by what pots and pans they could carry with them. The Tunisian tagine, is very different from the Algerian or Moroccan dish. It is a type of a pie dish, made out of eggs, meat and vegetables, similar to the Italian frittata or the eggah.

Transcript excerpt:
Although Tunisia has been making wine for thousands of years, the quality revolution only really started in the 19th and 20th centuries during the French occupation when modern winemaking techniques were introduced.
Tunisia’s warm, sunny climate means that grapes have no trouble ripening which gives the red wines lots of colour, fruity aromas and higher sugar levels which means they can be rather generous in alcohol.
The red wines can pack such a punch that rumour has it the French used to blend Tunisian Syrah into their own. What is for certain though, is that Tunisia's Syrah, Carignan and Touriga Nacional perform particularly well making voluptous, aromatic wines, that pair nicely with flavourful Tunisian dishes like roasted lamb and couscous. On the lighter spectrum, over 65% of Tunisia's wine production is rosé which range from fuller bodied wines to light and delicate. They also make a small amount of aromatic white wines which benefit from being in regions closer to the ocean breeze. Despite its long history, Tunisia's wine industry still feels in its infancy which much potential as of yet unexplored. This is because during centuries of Arabic rule Tunisia went almost completely dry.
