The Ulster Special Constabulary (USC; commonly called the "B-Specials" or "B Men'") was a quasi-military reserve Special constable police force in Northern Ireland. It was set up in October 1920, shortly before the partition of Ireland. It was an armed corps, organised partially on military lines and called out in times of emergency, such as war or insurgency. It performed this role in 1920–22 during the Irish War of Independence and in the 1950s, during the IRA Border Campaign.
During its existence, 95 USC members were killed in the line of duty. Most of these (72) were killed in conflict with the IRA in the years 1921 and 1922. Another 8 died during the Second World War, in air raids or IRA attacks. Of the remainder, most died in accidents but two former officers were killed during the Troubles in the 1980s.
The force was almost exclusively Ulster Protestant and as a result was viewed with great mistrust by Catholics. It carried out several revenge killings and reprisals against Catholic civilians in the 1920–22 conflict. Unionists generally supported the USC as contributing to the defence of Northern Ireland from subversion and outside aggression.
The Ulster Special Constabulary Association (USCA) was a loyalist group active in Northern Ireland during the early 1970s.
The group was established following the dissolution of the Ulster Special Constabulary (commonly known as the B Specials) and operated with a semi-paramilitary structure. It initially began as a series of unrelated small groups of former B Specials who maintained contact before eventually crystallising into a formal vigilante group. The group was able to call upon as many as 10,000 members upon its formation in 1970. Initially it functioned mainly as a pressure group, demanding the introduction of tougher laws against the Irish Republican Army as well as a return to a more localised form of policing as typified by the B Specials. Soon however it became more closely associated with existing Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups.
George Green was the leading figure in the USCA and he represented the group on the Ulster Army Council during the run-up to the Ulster Workers' Council strike. Under Green the group co-operated closely with the Ulster Defence Association (UDA), helping them set up weekend roadblocks for five weeks immediately prior to the strike. During the strike itself the USCA was part of a faction of minor loyalist paramilitary groups, represented by the Orange Volunteers, Ulster Volunteer Service Corps, Down Orange Welfare and themselves, who pushed for Bill Craig to take a leading role in the running of the strike. The UDA and UVF had hoped to exclude politicians from the conduct of the strike as much as possible but ultimately acquiesced and allowed both Craig and Ian Paisley to play prominent public roles in the stoppage.
Ulster (/ˈʌlstər/; Irish:Ulaidh pronounced[ˈul̪ˠəi] or Cúige Uladh pronounced[ˈkuːɟə ˈul̪ˠə], Ulster Scots: Ulstèr or Ulster) is a province in the north of the island of Ireland. In ancient Ireland, it was one of the fifths (Irish:cúige) ruled by a rí ruirech, or "king of over-kings".
The definition of the province was fluid from early to medieval times. It took a definitive shape in the reign of King James I of England when all the counties of Ireland were eventually shired. This process of evolving conquest had been under way since the Norman invasion of Ireland, particularly as advanced by the Cambro-Norman magnates Hugh de Lacy and John de Courcy. Ulster was a central topic role in the parliamentary debates that eventually resulted in the Government of Ireland Act 1920. Under the terms of the Act, Ireland was divided into two territories, Southern Ireland and Northern Ireland, with the border passing through the province. "Southern Ireland" was to be all of Ireland except for "the parliamentary counties of Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone, and the parliamentary boroughs of Belfast and Londonderry [the city of Derry]" which were to constitute "Northern Ireland". The area of Northern Ireland was seen as the maximum area within which Ulster Protestants/unionists could be expected to have a safe majority, despite counties Fermanagh and Tyrone having slight Roman Catholic/Irish nationalist majorities. While these six counties and two parliamentary boroughs were all in the province of Ulster, three other counties of the province – Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan – were assigned to the Irish Free State.

The B Specials, probably the most hated police force in Europe.
What are the members of the B-Specials really like and why have they got such a bad reputation?
Tom McCahy, builder and a member of the Ulster Special Constabulary for the last twenty seven years, recalls situations where he has used his weapon when caught in violence. He believes that a campaign of propaganda has resulted in the B-Specials bad reputation.
District Commandant Wallace Clarke is the third generation of his family to be a member of the B-Specials. He says the B-Specials were established to fight terrorism in Northern Ireland. He refutes any claims that they are bully boys and says he would not be a member of such a force.
Our image has got completely astray. The reasons why chaps are in the special contabulary, they’re ordinary, decent, kindly people just like any other group. They dislike their families being terrorised.
They are now to be disbanded and replaced by a new internal security force.
People in the North, Catholics and Protestants, always slightly fear the Specials, especially in time of trouble when jittery fingers have been known to be over hasty on the trigger.
Founder of the B-Specials Lord Brookeborough believes that the B Specials have achieved what they set out to do when they were established over fifty years ago.
This episode of ‘7 Days’ was broadcast on 17 October 1969. The reporter is Rodney Rice.

The Red Hand of Ulster - An Lámh Dhearg! - The Irish Legend that Became History
An Lámh Dhearg, the red hand of Ulster, is a famous symbol of Northern Ireland. And it’d be hard to find a more dramatic object to put on a flag.
But the roots of the Hand are tied to a mysterious origin story that may go back as far as pagan times in Ireland.
The icon itself is quite literally a red hand, palm facing the viewer, fingers pointed upwards. Usually it is a right hand, but in some variations a left hand is used.
As a documented heraldic emblem, the red hand first appears in the 13th century. However, historians don't really know the exact origin or reasoning for how the symbol of the hand came to be. In this video, Erik recounts the history and the exciting legend of how the Red Hand of Ulster came to be.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

(28 Jan 1977) RR7704B UK ULSTER PATROLLING CROSSMAGLEN
The British government maintains 14,000 troops in
Northern Ireland to keep the peace between Protestants
and Catholics, loyalists to the United Kingdom and those
who want to sever Ulster's constitutional links with
mainland Britain. The job of the soldiers is a
dangerous one - already this year three have died
and in 1972 some 130 were killed by terrorists'
bombs, booby-traps and gunmen. This item looks at
the work of the Royal Highland Fusiliers detachment
at Crossmaglen, the front line.

The Story of The Ulster Special Constabulary - The 'B' Specials - Bravery - Loyalty - Honour.
From its inception in 1920 until its disbandment in 1970, this video tells the story of the bravest of the brave, The Ulster Special Constabulary -The 'B' Specials
Please help support this channel: https://buymeacoffee.com/arcthompsoi
In this talk, Christopher Magill examines Ulster in 1920, from the shipyard expulsions to the wave of summer rioting that swept through Banbridge, Dromore, Belfast and Lisburn, and the emergence of the Ulster Special Constabulary (USC). Dr Christopher Magill earned his PhD from QUB in 2014, with a doctorate exploring East Ulster and the Irish revolution, 1920-22. His first book, Political conflict in East Ulster, 1920-22 : revolution and reprisal, was published in 2020.
Note: this video has been re-uploaded in order to correct some audio issues.
The Hunt Report recommends that the Ulster Special Constabulary be disbanded and replaced with a new security force.
‘7 Days’ takes a look at the workings of the Ulster Special Constabulary and talks to some serving members.
Former Prime Minister of Northern Ireland Basil Brooke (Lord Brookeborough) was the first Commandant of the Ulster Special Constabulary or ‘B-Specials’ as they are commonly known gives his reaction that the force will be dissolved..
DUP MLA for North Antrim Mervyn Storey proposing a motion on the floor of the Northern Ireland Assembly calling on the Secretary of State to mark the 40th anniversary of the dissolution of the Ulster Special Constabulary (B Specials) and the creation of the Ulster Defence Regiment
David Brubaker, associate professor of organizational studies at CJP, discusses his work with the Roal Ulster Constabulary in Northern Ireland on a five year transformation process to help the police force change from a highly militarized force to a police service that would serve the entire community.
Ulster's Guardian of Peace - Lord Derby. Northern Ireland.
Military; Northern Ireland. Lord Derby reviews a military group referred to here as Ulster's Guardians of Peace - maybe the Ulster Special Constabulary; the Black & Tans; who after the partition of Ireland in 1920; were officially recognised and paid by the British Government; they imposed martial law on much of Northern Ireland and dealt harshly w/ the opposition. This is a big rally of these thugs - pan across park w/ many of them standing. CU Lord D. on platform making speech. 2 rows of the guardians of peace. The Black and Tans march past spectators in park. Lord D. & other bigwigs on platform. More of marching.

Military veterans are being sought out by a Police Force keen to recruit them.
Hampshire Constabulary believe former Royal Navy, British Army or Royal Air Force personnel would make ideal Special Constables.
Being a special constable is a commitment of time over potentially a long period for no financial return.
It brings benefits like a sense of purpose and of community engagement.
For some former military personnel, it brings back a little of what they might be missing from the Royal Navy, British Army or Royal Air Force.
Following Lt. General Freeland’s announcement that the ‘B’ Specials were to be withdrawn from riot duty, Minister of Development, Brian Faulkner, holds a press conference to explain his government’s position on the Ulster Special Constabulary.
While Westminster was pushing for changes to the ‘B’ Specials, many within the Unionist Party were opposed to any such moves.
Faulkner talks about the role of the RUC and the defence forces in dealing with the security problem in Northern Ireland. He also states that there is absolutely no suggestion that the Ulster Special Constabulary should be disbanded. The Ulster Constabulary is a security force that is being used to guard vital installations.

Documentary looking at the history, identity & idea of Ulster as a place distinct from the rest of Ireland through the centuries old influence of its Scottish settlers.
