Looking for Redheads in Russia | Udmurtia 🇷🇺
When I travel in Russia, I'm constantly looking for fun and curious facts about Russians. And that's how I found out about a strange peculiarity of the people of Udmurtia, in central Russia: Udmurt people have a lot of red hair. As in, over 10% of ethnic Udmurts have red hair. A percentage similar to Ireland and some parts of the UK, which is unusual to say the least.
When I read that, I decided that I absolutely had to pack my bags and go and visit Udmurtia. I wanted to see red-haired people with my own eyes, after all. When I found out that there are direct rail connections between Moscow and Izhevsk, the capital of the Republic of Udmurtia, I was over the moon. Even if it was a seventeen-hour train ride.
In my quest to set foot in every single federal subject in Russia, the republic...

Adventures in an Udmurt village, Russia 🍂 // VLOG

During my time there, I enjoyed the Russian nature, went sightseeing in the village, hanged out with locals, learned about the local culture and traditions. It was fun!

01:55 - Service & Hospitality in a village hotel
03:36 - Slavic & Udmurt mythology creatures
04:59 - Checking out the main hang out spots in the village
07:39 - Perfect meditation
11:22 - Time to lick an ant
12:44 - Trying on folk clothes at a local museum
13:30 - To be continued

The Genetics of Udmurts - Генетика Удмуртов
There is a misunderstanding that some people have, that since Udmurts and Finns both speak Finno-Ugric languages, they must be genetically similar to early Finno-Ugrians. This is, of course, not the case. Despite having Finno-Ugrian Ydna, Finnish people carry almost not a drop of Uralic blood. Udmurts have more Uralic blood, around a quarter. Both the Finns and the Udmurts are largely Indo-Europeans who transitioned towards speaking a language from the East.
In terms of modern population genetics, Udmurts are not at all similar to the Finns. Udmurts are closer to Crimean Tatars than to even Eastern Finns. Udmurts are closer to Turkmen than to Central Finns. And still, Udmurts are much closer to all these populations than they are to pure Finno-Ugrians from bronze age Krasnoyarsk.

In my quest to set foot in every single federal subject in Russia, the republic of Udmurtia was number 19.

Udmurts are an Uralic tribe living in the northern Volga basin of Russia and share a common ancestry that can be traced back to a single Y-chromosomal haplogroup. During my time in Izhevsk and Udmurtia, I discovered something that left me a bit upset: it's very hard now to find 100% pure Udmurts. Especially in the capital.
Udmurts have been mixing with Russians for decades, so that's why in Izhevsk, a city of over 600,000, it's very rare to find pure Udmurt people, that is somebody with both parents with Udmurt blood. I was told that in the villages outside of Izhevsk, in rural Udmurtia, I might have had better luck. Unfortunately time didn't allow for me to wander outside of Izhevsk, as I would soon leave eastwards, towards Yekaterinburg and Siberia. I left with the train from Moscow at 5 PM, arrived in Izhevsk at 10 the following morning, and at midnight I would have had to go back to the railway station of Izhevsk for my train to Yekaterinburg, a further ten hours.
So what did I do? I just went around town asking people if they were Russian or Udmurt. I'm not kidding, that's what I did. And to be fair, that is kinda how I found there are loads of different ethnic groups in town. There's a lot of Russians, of course (they're the majority in Izhevsk), but there are a lot of Udmurts and Tatars too. And many people are also mixed! Which was cool, but that also meant that I would not have much luck finding pure Udmurts with red hair.
While it's true that I didn't find the red hair that I was hoping to see in Udmurtia, at least I was able to hear the language! Udmurts are renowned for their language which belongs to the finno-ugric languages. While the language is slowly dying out, I had the chance to meet with a couple of people who knew some Udmurt and I heard the language! A nice Udmurt lady I found was so kind that she even let me hear the national Udmurt anthem, as she sang it in front of me! Absolutely fascinating, she was so lovely...she did have blonde hair, which was of course a bit disappointing, but never mind...
I also had the opportunity to taste some Udmurt food (which I didn't like) and jump on the traditional Russian banya. Oh and by the way, I forgot to tell you during my visit to Izhevsk the temperature was quite low. -23! And of course, I did the usual Russian thing of going from the sauna straight out into a cold pool in the coldest weather I've ever experienced. Fun times!

WHO AM I?
I started making videos for Youtube when I was a university student. I was always trying to find cheap getaways to do some traveling in spite of the adversities put in place by being a broke university student living on their own! Traveling became more and more a fundamental passion of mine, and now that I'm gradually moving on to make a job out of it I couldn't be happier, and I can only continue making this kind of videos both for mine and your enjoyment!
I also run an ONLINE SHOP with TRAVEL MERCHANDISE, feel free to check it out here 👉 https://bit.ly/2x1Zzjf

In this video I had a solo trip to Kez, an Udmurt village in Russia. I met with Ekaterina, a tik tok blogger and an owner of an ethnic hotel Zhivitsa, where I spent the weekend. During my time there, I enjoyed the Russian nature, went sightseeing in the village, hanged out with locals, learned about the local culture and traditions. It was fun!

If we compare Udmurts to modern ethnicities, they aren’t very similar to anybody except Besermyan people - who are pretty much a subethnos of Udmurts anyway.
Who were the ancestors of Udmurts in the bronze age?
In the early and middle bronze age, the ancestors of Udmurts spoke Indo-European languages, Indo-Iranian to be specific. The name “Udmurt” itself is of Indo-Iranian origin. In ossetian language, Ud-goymak means a person. In Persian, “mard” means a mortal, in Russian “mertvec” means a dead man.Udmurt I suppose, means a mortal man. The words Udmurt, Mari, Mordvin and Erzya all have Iranic etymology.
Anyway in the middle bronze age, according to G25, 41.8% of Udmurt’s ancestors were of Srubna culture, and thus spoke Iranian languages. 24.4% of their ancestors belonged to Estonian-Baltic bronze age cultures, and spoke likely Baltic languages, 24.2% of their ancestors were of Krasnoyarsk Uralic origin and spoke Uralic languages, and 9.6% of their ancestors belonged to Turkmen Parkhai cluster, of BMAC culture, speaking Dravidian. This substrate in Udmurts is likely the result of mixing with later Iranians.
If we break the ancestry of Udmurts into more “ancient” parts, in the eneolithic, 46.8% of Udmurts’ ancestors were of Khvalynsk culture, and spoke Proto-IndoEuropean. 15.4% of Udmurts’ ancestors were of Maykop culture, 22.6% were of Ymyyakhtakh culture, 15.2% of Funnelbeaker culture, speaking paleoeuropean.
In Udmurtia lived first Neanderthals, then Cro-Magnons, then Ancient North Eurasians, then Eastern Hunter gatherers, then proto-Indoeuropeans, then Indo-Iranians, then finally Finno-Ugrians. Udmurts carry genes from all of these people.
In regards to the appearance of Udmurts, they tend to have black hair and brown eyes, a short build, vaguely European facial features. Data from Mozhginsk graves collected by anthropologist Zenkevich P.I. suggests that around 50% of Udmurts had faces of normal width, 20% Narrow faces, and 30% wide faces. Udmurts from Mozhga being significantly more narrow faced than Udmurts from Burino. According to the studies of anthropologist D.A.Zolotorev, who studied the Udmurts of Mamadysh province, Udmurts were unique in one trait - that trait being prognathism - the forward growth of the upper and lower jaw. Udmurts are brachycephalic. According to this study, half of Udmurts had blue or grey eyes. Although in my experience with Udmurts, I think modern Udmurts are much darker eyed than that.
I couldnt find any reliable data on the pigmentation of udmurts, but if I had to guess based on my observations, I would say half of Udmurts are brown eyed, quarter hazel and green eyed, and quarter blue eyed
Same with hair, half black haired, quarter brown haired, quarter blonde
