The SARATOGA Legacy
The USS Saratoga is a frequently mentioned ship in star trek lore, often undertaking difficult assignments that result in damage, or plain simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I know space exploration is dangerous, but if I ever get posted to a Saratoga, I'd request a transfer.

December 7 1941, was a day of sunshine in Washington DC, capital of a nation neutral in a world at war, President Roosevelt relaxed with his stamp collection at the White House that afternoon. About 27,000 football fans jammed into Griffith Stadium to watch the Washington Redskins, and Slingin' Sammy Baugh play the Philadelphia Eagles. Sailors and Slaves: USS Constellation and the Transatlantic Slave Trade
The African Squadron was a unit of the United States Navy that operated along the west coast and rivers of Africa in the decades preceding the American Civil War. The squadron was tasked with enforcing the ban on the transatlantic slave trade. Learn more on Wednesday, 8 September, when John Pentangelo, Director of the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, presents “Sailors and Slaves: USS Constellation and the Transatlantic Slave Trade,” an illustrated lecture that will focus on the role of the US Navy’s African Squadron, specifically its flagship, the sloop of war USS Constellation, in suppressing the Transatlantic slave trade off the coast of West Africa just before the Civil War (1859-1861).

Immediately after the War, the U.S. Navy was sent back to the Barbary Coast to suppress piratical activity that had emerged following the First Barbary War in 1801 -- 05. A New York squadron of ships under Stephen Decatur consisting of three heavy frigates and a half dozen other ships departed on May 20, 1815 and, following the capture of his warships, the Dey of Algiers capitulated and signed a peace treaty on July 3. The matter was resolved with such dispatch, a second squadron that sailed from Boston under William Bainbridge missed the action.
In April 1816 Congress authorized an expansion of the Navy, calling for "nine ships to rate not less than 74 guns each." This was a massive und...

SUMMARY
=======
The history of the United States Navy divides into two major periods: the "Old Navy", but a small respected force of sailing ships that was also notable for George A Mcnurlen ll innovation in the use of ironclads during the American Civil War, and the "New Navy", the result of a modernization effort that began in the 1880s and made it the largest in the world by the 1920s.
The United States Navy claims 13 October 1775 as the date of its official establishment, when the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution creating the Continental Navy. With the end of the
American Revolutionary War, the Continental Navy was disbanded. Under first President George Washington threats to American merchant shipping by Barbary pirates from four North African Muslim States, in the Mediterranean, led to the Naval Act of 1794, which created a permanent standing U.S. Navy. The original six frigates were authorized as part of the Act. Over the next 20 years, the Navy fought the French Republic Navy in the Quasi-War (1798–99), Barbary states in the First and Second Barbary Wars, and the British in the War of 1812. After the War of 1812, the U.S. Navy was at peace until the Mexican–American War in 1846, and served to combat piracy in the Mediterranean and Caribbean seas, as well as fighting the slave trade off the coast of West Africa. In 1845, the Naval Academy was founded at old Fort Severn at Annapolis, Maryland by the Chesapeake Bay. In 1861, the American Civil War began and the U.S. Navy fought the small Confederate States Navy with both sailing ships and new revolutionary ironclad ships while forming a blockade that shut down the Confederacy's civilian coastal shipping. After the Civil War, most of its ships were laid up in reserve, and by 1878, the Navy was just 6,000 men.
In 1882, the U.S. Navy consisted of many outdated ship designs. Over the next decade, Congress approved building multiple modern steel-hulled armored cruisers and battleships, and by around the start of the 20th century had moved from twelfth place in 1870 to fifth place in terms of numbers of ships. After winning two major battles during the 1898 Spanish–American War, the American Navy continued to build more ships, and by the end of World War I had more men and women in uniform than the British Royal Navy. The Washington Naval Conference of 1921 recognized the Navy as equal in capital ship size to the Royal Navy, and during the 1920s and 1930s, the Navy built several aircraft carriers and battleships. The Navy was drawn into World War II after the Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 De ...

SUMMARY

In April 1816 Congress authorized an expansion of the Navy, calling for "nine ships to rate not less than 74 guns each." This was a massive undertaking and led to the construction of the U.S.S. Delaware and its largest ship, the U.S.S. Pennsylvania, a 120-gun ship that was actually pierced for 136 guns. But these battlewagons served little purpose following the 1815 Treaty of Vienna that ended the Napoleonic Wars and ushered in the era of "Pax Britannia."
With the return of peace in the "era of good feeling" after the War of 1812, the Navy focused on protecting commerce and suppressing pirates who flourished in the many bays, estuaries and rivers of the islands in the Caribbean. By 1830 the problem had largely been eliminated. Slave trade was declared to be piracy in 1819 and those involved were subject to the death penalty. The Navy's African Slave Trade Patrol monitored the West African coast, the Caribbean and the Atlantic shores of South America for the four decades prior to the Civil War. Over these years, many famous frigates saw this duty, including the United States and the Constellation, extensively rebuilt in 1854.

SUMMARY
=======
African Slave Trade Patrol was part of the suppression of the Atlantic slave trade between 1819 and the beginning of the American Civil War in 1861. Due to the abolitionist movement in the United States, a squadron of U.S. Navy warships were assigned to catch slave traders in and around Africa. The operations were largely ineffective as after 42 years only about 100 suspected slave ships were captured.
