USS Northampton - CLC–1 (Cruiser)
The USS Northampton (CLC-1/CC-1) began its journey as an Oregon City-class heavy cruiser (CA–125), laid down in August 1944 and later reclassified as a command cruiser under project SCB 13. Converted and launched in January 1951, she was commissioned in March 1953 as CLC–1. After shakedown, Northampton conducted tests under Commander Operational Development Forces, Atlantic Fleet. She served as a tactical Command Ship and flagship for various fleet commanders, demonstrating capabilities in midshipmen training, NATO exercises, and hosting dignitaries. Engaging in communication equipment evaluations, Northampton participated in the Navy’s first guided missile demonstration and European training cruises. Converted and launched in January 1951, she was commissioned in March 1953 as CLC–1. After shakedown, Northampton conducted tests under Commander Operational Development Forces, Atlantic Fleet. She served as a tactical Command Ship and flagship for various fleet commanders, demonstrating capabilities in midshipmen training, NATO exercises, and hosting dignitaries.
