USS Arizona was a Pennsylvania-classbattleship built for and by the United States Navy in the mid-1910s. Named in honor of the 48th state's recent admission into the union, the ship was the second and last of the Pennsylvania class of "super-dreadnought" battleships. Although commissioned in 1916, the ship remained stateside during World War I. Shortly after the end of the war, Arizona was one of a number of American ships that briefly escorted President Woodrow Wilson to the Paris Peace Conference. The ship was sent to Turkey in 1919 at the beginning of the Greco-Turkish War to represent American interests for several months. Several years later, she was transferred to the Pacific Fleet and remained there for the rest of her career.
Aside from a comprehensive modernization in 1929–31, Arizona was regularly used for training exercises between the wars, including the annual Fleet Problems (training exercises). When an earthquake struck Long Beach, California, in 1933, Arizona's crew provided aid to the survivors. Two years later, the ship was featured in a Jimmy Cagney film, Here Comes the Navy, about the romantic troubles of a sailor. In April 1940, she and the rest of the Pacific Fleet were transferred from California to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as a deterrent to Japanese imperialism.
USS Neshaminy (1865) was a large and powerful 3,850-ton screw frigate with a length of 335 feet that was under construction at the Philadelphia Navy Yard when she was surveyed by Navy officials who found her construction work to be poor. Construction was halted by the Navy, which eventually sold her for scrap.
Built in the Philadelphia Navy Yard
Neshaminy, a screw frigate built by the United States Navy during 1863–65 and launched 5 October 1865 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, was a wooden ship of the first rate. She had two horizontal direct-acting engines of forty-eight-inch stroke and eight Martin boilers. Her machinery was built by the Etna Iron Works of New York.
The steamer was assigned a battery of two 100–pounder Parrott rifles, one 6–pounder rifle, ten 8-inch smoothbores, and four howitzers, but the battery was never mounted.
Construction problems
From 1866 through 1868 Neshaminy was at the New York Navy Yard for installation of her engines. In 1869 she was laid up in ordinary at that yard. Her name was changed to Arizona 15 May 1869, and to Nevada 12 August 1869.
Arizona is the 48th state and last of the contiguous states to be admitted to the Union, achieving statehood on February 14, 1912. It was previously part of the territory of Alta California in New Spain before being passed down to independent Mexico and later ceded to the United States after the Mexican–American War. The southernmost portion of the state was acquired in 1853 through the Gadsden Purchase.
Arizona was a 1913 silent film western feature directed by Augustus Thomas based on his famous play Arizona. It is one of the first feature films made in the United States, alongside Cleopatra and Richard III. Cyril Scott plays the lead Lt. Denton.

USS Arizona
On the morning of June 19, 1915, teenager Esther Ross fiddled with anxiety as a naval officer showed her the steps to christen a battleship.
It was the Prohibition era, and the man pointed at two bottles, one filled with wine and the other with water. He then turned to the prow of a gigantic ship covered with red fabric, a vessel soon to take her place as the mightiest battleship in the world.
The impressive beast known as Battleship 39 was one of America's first oil-fueled ships, the epitome of naval power and technological superiority.
However, this legendary vessel would never get to fire her guns in battle, and her modernity would ultimately be her demise.

Visiting the USS Arizona Memorial | Pearl Harbor, Hawaii
The USS Arizona Memorial is a significant historical and memorial site located in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. It commemorates the tragic events of December 7, 1941, when the United States was attacked by the Japanese, leading to the country's entry into World War II.
The memorial is built over the sunken remains of the USS Arizona, one of the battleships that was bombed and destroyed during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The ship's wreckage still rests on the harbor floor, and the memorial serves as a tribute to the 1,177 crew members who lost their lives on board.
The memorial itself is a solemn and iconic structure that spans the sunken hull of the USS Arizona. It consists of a white concrete platform that is supported by concrete pillars, creating an open-air space for visitors to pay their re...

General History: USS Arizona
A ship that almost everyone has heard of. A ship that, in another world, would have been forgotten as 'just another Standard'. A ship that will never be forgotten in death.
USS Arizona is a battleship that had a fairly standard service history. Her fame, or infamy, coming entirely from her death. The attack on Pearl Harbor. The most well-known scenes from that attack all relate to Arizona.
And for that, she will always be remembered.

A team of researchers captured footage of unseen areas inside the wreckage of the USS Arizona battleship that was sunk during the attacks on Pearl Harbor.
It consists of a white concrete platform that is supported by concrete pillars, creating an open-air space for visitors to pay their respects and reflect on the events of that fateful day. The design of the memorial was conceived by architect Alfred Preis and was dedicated in 1962.
Visitors to the USS Arizona Memorial can access it via a short boat ride from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. The boat takes visitors across the harbor to the memorial, providing an opportunity to see the expanse of Pearl Harbor and the nearby Battleship Missouri Memorial along the way.
