UPMC Altoona, located in downtownAltoona, Pennsylvania, is a 380-bed, non-profit, private community hospital system that contains more than 20 affiliated health care companies and functions as the regional referral center and tertiary hub of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). Founded in 1883 as to serve the needs of the area and the Pennsylvania Rail Road, the hospital was known for most of its history simply as Altoona Hospital. It became part of the Altoona Regional Health System which was created in 2004 by the merger of Altoona Hospital with Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital, previously Mercy Hospital of Altoona. Today as part of UPMC, it is an Adult Level II trauma center for a 20 county region in central Pennsylvania and is served by 300 physicians and 4,000 care givers that help it to provide a variety of medical services and specialties.
History
Prior to becoming part of the UPMC system, UPMC Altoona was known as the Altoona Regional Health System, of which Altoona Regional Hospital was the flagship facility and campus. That health system was the product of a 2004 merger between the city's two historic hospitals, Altoona Hospital and Mercy Hospital, the later of which became known as Bon Secours Holy Family Hospital in 1996.
The Altoona Transportation Center is an intermodal passenger facility built in 1986 providing local bus, intercity bus, and rail services. It is located at 1231 11th Avenue in downtown Altoona, Pennsylvania.
AMTRAN is the local public transit provider in the greater Altoona area. The primary user of the Altoona Transportation Center, almost all regular AMTRAN bus routes and selected "Tripper" routes stop at the center. The Transportation Center is considered the AMTRAN system's primary hub.
Greyhound provides intercity bus service to the station. It connects Altoona via one-seat rides to cities such as State College, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and New York to the east and Johnstown and Pittsburgh to the west. Greyhound also links Altoona with many other cities and towns beyond those listed via transfers.
The Altoona Transportation Center is also served by AmtrakPennsylvanian trains. These trains operate once per day in each direction. Until 2005, Altoona was served by a second daily train, the Three Rivers (a replacement service for the legendary Broadway Limited), an extended version of the Pennsylvanian that terminated in Chicago. Upon its cancellation, the sole Pennsylvanian marked the first time in Altoona's significant railway history that the town was served by just a single, daily passenger train.
Altoona is a city in central Pennsylvania Blair County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is the principal city of the Altoona Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The population was 46,320 at the time of the 2010 Census, making it the tenth most populous city in Pennsylvania. The Altoona MSA includes all of Blair County and was recorded as having a population of 127,089 at the 2010 Census, around 100,000 of which live within a 5-mile (8.0km) radius of the Altoona city center according to U.S. Census zip code population data. This includes the adjacent boroughs of Hollidaysburg and Duncansville, adjacent townships of Logan, Allegheny, Blair, Frankstown, Antis, and Tyrone, as well as nearby boroughs of Bellwood and Newry.

Gateway to Western Pennsylvania | Altoona, PA
Our Atlantic-Appalachia Tour has come to an end, and for our final destination we halt at a familiar environment, Pennsylvania. This time though, we explore a city located in the Keystone State's western half, a city whose history has long been about connecting the two halves of the state. This area developed as a railroad hub, where at the time, efficient freight transportation was difficult to come by. Although the glory days of the railroad have waned a bit, a variety of other industry has blessed this city. Watch as we get the opportunity to discover all there is to Altoona, the mountainous Pennsylvanian city with a blue collar charm!
