United Nations Development Programme

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the United Nations' global development network.

Headquartered in New York City, UNDP advocates for change and connects countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. It provides expert advice, training, and grant support to developing countries, with increasing emphasis on assistance to the least developed countries.

The status of UNDP is that of an executive board within the United Nations General Assembly. The UNDP Administrator is the third highest-ranking official of the United Nations after the United Nations Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General.

To accomplish the MDGs and encourage global development, UNDP focuses on poverty reduction, HIV/AIDS, democratic governance, energy and environment, social development, and crisis prevention and recovery. UNDP also encourages the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women in all of its programmes. The UNDP Human Development Report Office also publishes an annual Human Development Report (since 1990) to measure and analyse developmental progress. In addition to a global Report, UNDP publishes regional, national, and local Human Development Reports.

National Union for Democracy and Progress (Cameroon)

The National Union for Democracy and Progress (French: Union Nationale pour la Démocratie et le Progrès) is a political party in Cameroon, drawing its main support from the north of the country. It was established as an opposition party in the early 1990s and won the second largest number of seats in the 1992 parliamentary election. The UNDP's National President is Maigari Bello Bouba, who is currently a Minister of State in the government.

On May 25, 1990, former Prime Minister Maigari Bello Bouba, then in exile, announced the formation of a new party, the National Union for Democracy and Progress in Cameroon, in Paris. The party was officially established in Cameroon, as the National Union for Democracy and Progress, at a meeting in Douala on February 9, 1991. A request for the legalization of the party was filed on February 18, and it was accordingly legalized on March 25, 1991. Bello Bouba returned to Cameroon on August 17, 1991. The UNDP's First Ordinary Congress, at which the party's leadership and the membership of its organs was elected, was held on January 4–5, 1992 in Garoua. At the Congress, Bello Bouba became President of the UNDP, ousting its previous leader, Samuel Eboua. Eboua subsequently left the UNDP and formed the Movement for Democracy and Progress (MDP). The UNDP is considered by many, including the party itself, to represent the legacy of Ahmadou Ahidjo, who was President of Cameroon from 1960 to 1982.

When UNDP launched its digital strategy in 2019, we never expected just how important digital technologies would be to the world in 2020. Virtual became the new normal. To cope with the crisis, digital transformation was urgently needed, and accelerated rapidly. UNDP rose to the challenge. First, we digitized ourselves. We moved the entire workforce online within 6 days. Then, we helped governments digitize. We supported over 60 countries with critical technologies, video conferencing services, and hardware supplies. We assisted governments as they moved their critical services online. Across UNDP’s global network of country offices, over 250 digital responses to COVID-19 emerge. The use of digital helped countries rise to meet new challenges posed by the pandemic. An inclusive digital transformation means providing access to affordable internet, helping citizens with digital literacy, and raising awareness of challenges such as data privacy and misinformation. Digital has an impact on all of us: governments, businesses, and citizens. Digital can not only improve the lives of people impacted by the pandemic, but also presents a new way and a better future. We envision a future where everyone has access to affordable internet. We strive to help countries be inclusive digital nations.   The world spends an astounding US$423 billion annually to subsidize fossil fuels for consumers – oil, electricity that is generated by the burning of other fossil fuels, gas, and coal. This is four times the amount being called for to help poor countries tackle the climate crisis, one of the sticking points ahead of the COP26 global climate conference next week, according to new UN Development Programme (UNDP) research. The amount spent directly on these subsidies could pay for COVID-19 vaccinations for every person in the world, or pay for three times the annual amount needed to eradicate global extreme poverty. When indirect costs, including costs to the environment, are factored into these subsidies, the figure rises to almost US$6 trillion, according to data published recently by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Instead, UNDP’s analysis highlights that these funds, paid for by taxpayers, end up deepening inequality and impeding action on climate change. The main contributor to the climate emergency is the energy sector which accounts for 73 percent of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. Fossil fuel subsidy reforms would contribute to reducing CO2 emissions and benefit human health and well-being, and they are a first step towards correctly pricing energy – one that reflects the ‘true’ and full cost of using fossil fuels to society and the environment. But UNDP’s analysis shows that fossil fuel subsidy reforms can also be unfair and harmful for households and society if they are poorly designed. While fossil fuel subsidies tend to be an unequalising tool - as the lion’s share of the benefits concentrate among the rich - these subsidies also represent an important portion of poor peoples’ incomes that otherwise must be paid for energy consumption. Fossil fuel subsidies’ removal thus could easily become an income- and energy-impoverishing strategy. This contributes to making fossil fuels reform difficult, and imposes a key barrier to transitioning to clean and renewable energy sources. The Don’t Choose Extinction campaign features a collective intelligence platform, the Global Mindpool, to help tackle the most important issues of our time. In response to the growing speed and power of new technologies, the United Nations Development Programme set out on a journey of digital transformation. When UNDP launched its digital strategy in 2019, we never expected just how important digital technologies would be to the world in 2020. Virtual became the new normal. To cope with the crisis, digital transformation was urgently needed, and accelerated rapidly. UNDP rose to the challenge. First, we digitized ourselves. We moved the entire workforce online within 6 days. Then, we helped governments digitize. We supported over 60 countries with critical technologies, video conferencing services, and hardware supplies. We assisted governments as they moved their critical services online. Across UNDP’s global network of country offices, over 250 digital responses to COVID-19 emerge. The use of digital helped countries rise to meet new challenges posed by the pandemic. An inclusive digital transformation means providing access to affordable internet, helping citizens with digital literacy, and raising awareness of challenges such as data privacy and misinformation. Digital has an impact on all of us: governments, businesses, and citizens. Digital can not only improve the lives of people impacted by the pandemic, but also presents a new way and a better future. We envision a future where everyone has access to affordable internet. We strive to help countries be inclusive digital nations. We pursue a whole-of-society approach, where everyone benefits from digital transformation building a better future that leaves no one behind.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the United Nations' global development network.

Headquartered in New York City, UNDP advocates for change and connects countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. It provides expert advice, training, and grant support to developing countries, with increasing emphasis on assistance to the least developed countries.

The status of UNDP is that of an executive board within the United Nations General Assembly. The UNDP Administrator is the third highest-ranking official of the United Nations after the United Nations Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General.

To accomplish the MDGs and encourage global development, UNDP focuses on poverty reduction, HIV/AIDS, democratic governance, energy and environment, social development, and crisis prevention and recovery. UNDP also encourages the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women in all of its programmes. The UNDP Human Development Report Office also publishes an annual Human Development Report (since 1990) to measure and analyse developmental progress. In addition to a global Report, UNDP publishes regional, national, and local Human Development Reports.
