Independence (Hebrew:העצמאות, Ha'Atzma'ut) is a political party in Israel. It was launched by Defense Minister Ehud Barak on 17 January 2011 after he and four other Labor Party MKs announced their secession from the caucus. In the words of the announcement, the faction aims to be "centrist, Zionist, and democratic" and to establish itself as a separate political party. It was built on the vestiges of the Third Way party. Nine days after Barak announced his retirement from politics, it was announced that Independence would not contest the 2013 Knesset elections.
History
The secession was seen as a pre-emptive move, before other Labor MKs act on their ultimatum to either let Labor leave Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition due to the stalling of a peace process, or force Labour's then-chairman Barak to face the consequences within his own party. Splitting the Labour Party enabled Barak to keep a faction of Labour MKs loyal to him within Netanyahu's coalition, preventing the departure of all 13 Labour MKs from the coalition. As of 17 January 2011, the coalition has the support of 66 out of 120 MKs, as compared to 74 before that. Since Labour was often an unreliable coalition partner in Knesset voting, the reduced number of MKs does not increase the risk of a no-confidence vote. Netanyahu was singled out by analysts as the biggest winner from the split, and was reported to have been involved in the behind-the-scenes making of the political deal. Barak said that he was tired of infighting within Labour as he accused the rest of the Labour of "moving too far to the dovish end of the political spectrum." The more leftist faction was also wary of Barak's closeness to the Prime Minister Netanyahu.Daniel Ben-Simon left the Labour party in protest against Barak's decision to stay with the government.
Following its second-place finish in a race for Governor of Massachusetts in 1907, the party set its sights on the Presidency, and held a national convention to nominate a ticket in 1908. The party garnered 83,000 votes in the 1908 election, however, and immediately dissolved as a national force.
The Independence League of New York continued to nominate candidates for office in New York state until the state election of 1914.
History
Establishment
In 1905 millionaire newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst made a high profile run for Mayor of New York City under the banner of the Municipal Ownership League. Hearst ran on a reform ticket in opposition to incumbent Tammany Hall Democrat George B. McClellan, Jr. and Republican William Mills Ivins, Sr.. Randolph narrowly missed election, losing to the Democrat by fewer than 3,500 votes out of nearly 600,000 cast between the three candidates, with the New York Supreme Court ultimately deciding the matter in favor of Tammany Hall on June 30 amidst charges of electoral fraud.

It is the second time Farage has resigned as leader of the party, but he said this time it would be permanent.

Bolton is expected to give his first major speech at the party conference on Saturday.
UKIP has struggled since achieving its aim of winning public support in a 2016 referendum to leave the European Union.
It scored less than 2 percent of the votes in Britain's June election and holds no seats in the British Parliament despite having some representation in the European Parliament.

(4 Jul 2016) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: AP CLIENTS ONLY
UK POOL - AP CLIENTS ONLY
London - 4 July 2016
1. SOUNDBITE (English) Nigel Farage, UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader:
"I came into politics from business because I believed that this nation should be self-governing. I have never been and I have never wanted to be a career politician. My aim in being in politics was to get Britain out of the European Union. That is what we voted for in that referendum two weeks ago and that is why I now feel that I've done my bit, that I couldn't possible achieve more than we managed to get in that referendum and so I feel it's right I should now stand aside as a leader of UKIP. I will continue to support the party, I will support the new leader, I will watch the re-negotiation process in Brussels like a hawk and perhaps comment in European Parliament from time to time."
2. Audience applauding at the end of Farage's speech
STORYLINE:
UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader Nigel Farage on Monday said he is resigning as the head of the party, arguing his political ambition to have Britain leave the European Union (EU) had now been achieved.
Farage said he will retain his seat in the European Parliament to see out the negotiations for Britain's exit from the EU, following the country's June 23 vote to leave the bloc.
It is the second time Farage has resigned as leader of the party, but he said this time it would be permanent.

The UK Independence Party (UKIP) is on the verge of having its first MP in parliament.
Claiming that traditional political clans which have dominated British politics for generations have had their day, the party wants Britain to pull out of the EU and stricter controls on immigration.
A by-election for Clacton-on-Sea in eastern England, to be held on Thursday, was caused by the defection of an MP from Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative Party to UKIP.
Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee reports from Clacton-on-Sea.
The head of the U.K. Independence Party, Nigel Farage, resigned Monday as party leader, the latest political leader to tumble amid the political turmoil following the country's vote to leave the European Union. (July 4)

(29 Sep 2017) The weakened UK Independence Party on Friday announced that former Army officer Henry Bolton will be its fourth leader in just over one year.
Anne Marie Waters, an openly anti-Islam candidate who had divided the party, finished second in the leadership contest.
She leads a group called Sharia Watch UK that characterizes the spread of Islam as a threat to Britain.
Bolton said after his unexpected victory that securing Britain's rapid exit from the European Union is the party's "core task."
He said Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative government had so far failed to deliver on the Brexit mandate that voters wanted.
Britain and the European Union are currently negotiating the terms of their divorce.
"We want the right to self-determination," Bolton said, calling for an end to decisions affecting Britain being made in a foreign capital.

We've heard a lot about Reform UK recently, especially as their polling is similar to that of the Liberal Democrats - at around 10%. But, where has Reform come from, and what do they even stand for?
