As the election campaign in the UK hots up, we watch as the tired Labour Party limp towards the polling booths with a seemingly revitalised Conservative party readying themselves for 10 Downing Street, after 13 years in the political wilderness. But is all as it seems?
Britain's first-ever televised leadership debate saw a surprising overnight development - the opinion polls had the Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, the darkest of dark horses, running down the other 2 from behind! "Now you're going to be told tonight by these two that the only choice you can make is between two old parties who have been running things for years. I'm here to persuade you that there is an alternative", pleaded Clegg. The upshot is that tomorrow's election result is definitely no lay-down misère. It's developed into a genuine 3-horse race, with both the pundits and the public tipping a hung parliament for the first time in 35 years. Indeed, you could say that in this suddenly interesting election, very little is political business as usual.

(2 May 1997) English/Nat
British Prime Minister John Major conceded defeat in the U-K election at 02:30 G-M-T on Friday 2 May.
Speaking after he was returned as the Member of Parliament for Huntingdon, in South East England, Major conceded defeat -- but spoke of the responsibilities now facing Tony Blair - Britain's next Prime Minister and the first Labour leader to hold the post for 18 years.
SOUNDBITE:
"It is perfectly clear now that the Labour party has had an extremely successful evening. I telephoned Mr Blair a little over an hour ago to congratulate him on his success and to wish him every good fortune in the great responsibilities that he will have in the years that lie ahead. This is a great country. He inherits a country in extremely good economic shape. I wish him every success in sustaining that in the interests of all the people of this country."
SUPER CAPTION: John Major, British Prime Minister
But he struck an optimistic note about the future.
SOUNDBITE:
"Tonight we have been comprehensively defeated. We will listen to the voice of the electorate. We will consider what has been said to us. I think we must reflect upon it. I know that we will, and I know when we have reflected we will begin to prepare once again for that day in the future, I hope not too far distant, when my party may once again return to government in the service of this country."
SUPER CAPTION: John Major, British Prime Minister
As the vote count continues early Friday, Labour had 342 seats in the 659-member House of Commons.
The Conservatives had won 57 and the Liberal Democrats 24.

Congratulations have been flooding in for Labour leader Tony Blair following his landslide victory in the British elections.
The Labour Party stormed to a landslide victory Friday, ending 18 years of Conservative rule.
Meanwhile, one senior British political figure said she would be watching Blair's movements closely.
Former Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher was ousted as leader by the Conservative Party and replaced by John Major.
European Commission President Jacques Santer was swift to praise incoming British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
As well as stressing Britain's important role in a united Europe, he congratulated the Labour leader for his landslide victory.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We congratulate the British Labour leader, Tony Blair, for his outstanding victory. For us of course it is very important and we look forward to working with him very closely. Of course, there are many challenges ahead in Europe, the intergovernmental conference, the enlargement process, economic monetary union also the performance and the strengthening of the single market and I hope that under the presidency of Tony Blair, the British presidency is in the beginning of 1998, we will handle all these problems to bring prosperity and peace and I must say also security in Europe."
SUPER CAPTION: Jacques Santer, E-U Commission President
The Conservative Party has been bitterly divided about the role of the European Union.
During the campaign, more than 200 Conservative candidates, dubbed "Euro-sceptics", promised to oppose British participation in a single European currency, defying Major's wait-and-see policy.
One leading British political figure offering judgement on the outcome of the U-K elections was Britain's Prime Minister between 1979 and 1990, Margaret Thatcher.
Asked whether the issue of Europe had led to the downfall of the Conservative Party, the woman dubbed the Iron Lady said both parties were divided over the issue.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Both parties are split over Europe. They're split over the single currency - Cabinet and Shadow Cabinet. What is at stake is our whole future as an independent country. Our parliamentary sovereignty is being diminished. Our legal sovereignty is being overridden.
SUPER CAPTION: Lady Thatcher, Former Prime Minister
She added that she would be watching Blair closely, but refused to comment on John Major's replacement.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Q: Lady Thatcher what is your personal view of Tony Blair and the policies he has?
"He's fought an extremely skilful campaign. I don't know whether we know very much about the policies. He's very carefully cloaked the details in soft words and phrases."
Q: Lady Thatcher, do you think your legacy is safe in Mr Blair's hands?
"I shall have something to say if it isn't."
Q: Lady Thatcher have you a view on the successor to Mr Major"
"That's not for me to decide. I've been through that once and I've no wish to go through that again, that's why I went to the House of Lords, so that I could never be a rival.
SUPER CAPTION: Lady Thatcher, Former Prime Minister
A determined Tony Blair became prime minister by forcing the Labour Party to abandon its vote-losing socialist policies and moving to the vote-winning political centre.
He has pledged to lead "a Britain that stands tall in the world".

US President Bill Clinton on Saturday (3/5) said that new British Prime Minister Tony Blair "is a very exciting, very able man" and he will look forward to working with him.
SHOWS:
WASHINGTON, USA 3/5:
Ws of Bill Clinton in Oval office,
ms of Clinton,
people listening;
ENGSOT of Clinton saying "This is my first chance to comment on this and I'm looking forward to serving with the Prime Minister Blair. He's a very exciting man, a very able man. I like him very much. But I also think the people of the United States and the people of Great Britain should know that John Major represented that nation very well in the world. I have obviously no experience and no judgement about what happened domestically because I wasn't there and I'm not a British
citizen but in all of our dealings over these last four years and several months I was profoundly impressed by his patriotism, by his willingness to take tough decisions, especially in Bosnia where they were with us all the way, and so the British people can be proud of his stewardship and the Conservatives had a pretty good long run, you know, nothing lasts forever and they were in for a very long time. But I hope that Prime Minister Major, and I hope the British people, will always feel a great deal of pride in what they did and in the way they related to the rest of the world in his stewardship because I was very impressed by it";
Cutaway ws of Oval office;
More ENGSOT Clinton saying "I also was impressed with the fact that he had the courage to start the peace process in Northern Ireland and I hope and pray now that the British election is over that Prime Minister Blair will take up the torch, that the IRA will declare a ceasefire and that we can get back on the road to solving that problem because it's high time and I can tell you that's what the people of Northern Ireland
want";
