Illinois Route 176 is an east–west state route in northern Illinois. It runs from Illinois Route 23 (State Street) in Marengo to the southern terminus of Illinois Route 131 (Green Bay Road) in Lake Bluff. This is a distance of 41.28 miles (66.43km).
Route description
Illinois 176 is a two to four-lane arterial in northern Illinois. The eastern terminus of Illinois 176 is unique in that both Illinois 131 and Illinois 176 terminate at that corner; neither state route extends beyond that point in any direction.
While not part of Illinois 176, Rockland Road becomes Scranton Avenue east of Illinois 131, and then becomes Center Street east of Sheridan Road. With an average of a name change every 5 miles (8km), Illinois 176 is a state route probably easier to refer to by number than by its name.
History
SBI Route 176 originally ran from Crystal Lake to Lake Bluff. In 1941, the designation was extended westward to Marengo, replacing IL67, redundant to the newly-designated US67.
Construction began on phase one in the spring of 1997. The first segment of the Industrial Parkway extended a little over three miles (5km) to a new industrial park. A trumpet interchange was constructed at milepost 179 on Interstate 64. Along the Parkway are two at-grade intersections for this segment, both of which can be upgraded to full folded-diamond interchanges in the future if traffic counts warrant an upgrade. Phase one included four bridges and cost an estimated $50 million to construct.
In 1998, another five miles (8km) of the Industrial Parkway was constructed. This extended the Parkway from the end of phase one to Culp Creek Road, and opened in late-2001 to local traffic and officially opened in early-2002. Extending the progression of the highway northward, the third phase opened to traffic in the fall of 2002. Construction began in early-2001 and included a bridge over a small tributary and a folded-diamond interchange with KY 207.
US 69 begins at its southern terminus with SH 87 in Port Arthur. This intersection is also the southern terminus for US 96 and US 287, which are concurrent with US 69. US 69, US 96, and US 287 continue in a northwest, then west, route until its intersection with Interstate 10 in southern Beaumont. At this intersection, US 69, US 96, and US 287 merge with I-10. I-10/US 69/US 96/US 287 continue in a northerly direction through Beaumont for several miles. Just after the intersection with US 90, I-10 splits from the multiplex and resumes its easterly course, leaving US 69, US 96, and US 287 heading northwest through Beaumont. US 69 north of I-10 is also known officially known as Eastex Freeway, and is an official evacuation route, just as Interstate 69/US 59 heading north from Houston is known as Eastex Freeway as well.
U.S. Route66 (US66 or Route66), also known as the Will Rogers Highway and colloquially known as the Main Street of America or the Mother Road, was one of the original highways within the U.S. Highway System. Route66 was established on November 11, 1926, with road signs erected the following year. The highway, which became one of the most famous roads in America, originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before ending at Santa Monica, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940km). It was recognized in popular culture by both the hit song "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66" and the Route66 television show in the 1960s.
Route66 served as a major path for those who migrated west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and it supported the economies of the communities through which the road passed. People doing business along the route became prosperous due to the growing popularity of the highway, and those same people later fought to keep the highway alive in the face of the growing threat of being bypassed by the new Interstate Highway System.
The highway begins at an intersection with US 10 and WIS-96 southeast of Fremont. It heads north from US 10 for about half a mile before turning westward. It passes through Fremont and heads to the northwest before turning to the south toward US 10 and WIS-49.
The highway then runs concurrently to the north with US 10 and WIS-49 for about 5 miles (8.0km). It then splits off and heads northward into Weyauwega. After it leaves the city, the highway continues to the northwest, where it will meet with WIS-22 and WIS-54. It runs concurrently to the north along both highways before WIS-54 splits off. WIS-110 and WIS-54 continue concurrently northward, passing through Manawa. North of Manawa, the highways split and WIS-110 continues to the north. Further along, it enters Marion, where it terminates at US 45.
U.S. Route 67 runs parallel to Interstate 30 from Texarkana to Benton, where it then runs concurrent with I-30 to North Little Rock. It then runs east, concurrent with I-40, for about 2 miles (3.2km) then branches off to the northeast as a freeway to near Swifton. Temporarily, US67 travels west for about 6 miles (9.7km) along Highway 226 at the end of the freeway to its old 2-lane alignment, where it continues north toward Hoxie. Just south of Hoxie, US67 is routed east along the US63 bypass for a short distance, then north on a short section of freeway bypassing Hoxie and Walnut Ridge. This section of freeway will eventually be connected to the interstate-style freeway that currently ends at Arkansas Highway 226. It is currently under construction and will open in the next two to three years.
