Tule Lake (/ˈtuːliː/TOO-lee) is an intermittent lake covering an area of 13,000 acres (53km2), 8.0km (5.0mi) long and 4.8km (3.0mi) across, in northeastern Siskiyou County and northwestern Modoc County in California, along the border with Oregon.
Geography
Tule Lake is fed by the Lost River. The elevation of the lake is 4,035ft (1,230m).
Canby's Cross is located about three miles south of the lake; it is the site where General Edward Canby was killed by the Modoc chief Kintpuash, also known to American settlers as Captain Jack.
During World War II, the United States federal government forced the evacuation of Japanese nationals and Japanese Americans, including citizens born in the United States, to numerous camps built in the interior of California and inland states. They were forced to sell their businesses and homes, and suffered enormous economic and psychological losses by being treated as potential enemies. The Tule Lake War Relocation Center, a Japanese American internment camp, is located to the east in neighboring Modoc County. Following World War II, the federal government awarded 86 farm sites on land reclaimed by the drainage of Tule Lake to returning veterans using a Land Lottery. A lottery was used because the number of applicants was greater than the number of homesteads available.
Schoenoplectus acutus (syn.Scirpus acutus, Schoenoplectus lacustris, Scirpus lacustris subsp. acutus), called tule/ˈtuːliː/, common tule, hardstem tule, tule rush, hardstem bulrush, or viscid bulrush, is a giant species of sedge in the plant family Cyperaceae, native to freshwatermarshes all over North America. The common name derives from the Nāhuatl word tōllin[ˈtoːlːin], and was first applied by the early settlers from New Spain who recognized the marsh plants in the Central Valley of California as similar to those in the marshes around Mexico City.
Tules once lined the shores of Tulare Lake, California, formerly the largest freshwater lake in the western United States, until it was drained by land speculators in the 20th century. The expression "out in the tules" is still common, deriving from the dialect of old Californian families and means "where no one would want to live", with a touch of irony. The phrase is comparable to "out in the boondocks".
It has a thick, rounded green stem growing to 1 to 3m (3 to 10ft) tall, with long, grasslike leaves, and radially symmetrical, clustered, pale brownish flowers. Tules at shorelines play an important ecological role, helping to buffer against wind and water forces, thereby allowing the establishment of other types of plants and reducing erosion. Tules are sometimes cleared from waterways using herbicides. When erosion occurs, tule rhizomes are replanted in strategic areas.
A lake is an area of variable size filled with water, localized in a basin, that is surrounded by land, apart from any river or other outlet that serves to feed or drain the lake. Lakes lie on land and are not part of the ocean (except for sea lochs in Scotland and Ireland), and therefore are distinct from lagoons, and are also larger and deeper than ponds, though there are no official or scientific definitions. Lakes can be contrasted with rivers or streams, which are usually flowing. However most lakes are fed and drained by rivers and streams.
Natural lakes are generally found in mountainous areas, rift zones, and areas with ongoing glaciation. Other lakes are found in endorheic basins or along the courses of mature rivers. In some parts of the world there are many lakes because of chaotic drainage patterns left over from the last Ice Age. All lakes are temporary over geologic time scales, as they will slowly fill in with sediments or spill out of the basin containing them.
Many lakes are artificial and are constructed for industrial or agricultural use, for hydro-electric power generation or domestic water supply, or for aesthetic or recreational purposes.
Lake (stylized as LAKE) is an American indie pop band, signed to K Records, based in Olympia, Washington. Formed in 2005, they are also known for composing the end song to the Cartoon Network show Adventure Time, entitled "Christmas Island" or "The Island Song" . A version of the song was featured on their third album, Let's Build a Roof. Another Adventure Time episode entitled "Shh!" , featured their song "No Wonder I."
Musical style
Lake features male and female vocals backed by guitars, keyboards and occasionally horns. AllMusic referred to Lake as being "one of several brainy and sweet indie pop bands... to call the Pacific Northwest their home." These characteristics were also noted in their reviews by Pitchfork Media. Like many artists on K Records, their style is lo-fi.
