Tropical Depression One is a number of the Tropical Depression numbering system it has been used many times in the Atlantic Ocean. For a Depression to be named tropical depression One it has to be the first cyclone of an Atlantic hurricane season and not become a tropical storm or hurricane.
Tropical Depression One brought severe flooding to Jamaica in June1979. The second tropical cyclone of the Atlantic hurricane season, the depression developed from a tropical wave to the south of Grand Cayman on June11. Tracking generally northward, the depression passed west of Jamaica. On June12, the depression peaked with maximum sustained winds of 35mph (55km/h), never having reached tropical storm status. The following day, it made landfall in Cuba, where minimal impact was recorded. Early on June14, the depression emerged into the western Atlantic Ocean and then moved parallel to the east coast of Florida for a few days. The depression made another landfall in South Carolina on June16 and dissipated shortly thereafter.
The slow movement of the depression to the west of Jamaica resulted in torrential rainfall, peaking at 32in (810mm) in Friendship, a city in Westmoreland Parish. Throughout western Jamaica, about 1,000homes were destroyed or severely damage, while up to 40,000people were left homeless. The city of New Market was submerged for at least six months. Crops, electricity, telephones, buildings, and railways also suffered damage during the disaster. There were 40deaths and approximately $27million (1979USD) in damage. The depression also brought heavy precipitation to Cuba and the Bahamas, while farther north, light rainfall and rough seas plagued the East Coast of the United States. One individual in South Carolina went missing and was later presumed to have died after their boat was torn loose from its mooring.
Tropical Depression One was the first tropical cyclone to develop during the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season. Upon being declared a tropical depression on May28, it marked the third time that a pre-season storm formed in three consecutive years. Originating from a disorganized area of low pressure off the coast of North Carolina, Tropical Depression One quickly developed over the Gulf stream. After attaining winds of 35mph (55km/h) along with a minimum pressure of 1006mbar (hPa; 29.71inHg), the depression began to weaken due to increasing wind shear and cooling sea surface temperatures. During the afternoon of May29, convection associated with the system was significantly displaced from the center of circulation; this led the National Hurricane Center to issue their final advisory on the depression as it had degenerated into a remnant-low pressure area. As a tropical cyclone, Tropical Depression One had no effects on land; however, the precursor to the depression brought minor rainfall and light winds to parts of coastal North Carolina. Its track, formation, and timing were relatively similar to Tropical Storm One of the 1940 Atlantic hurricane season.
A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system characterized by a low-pressure center, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produce heavy rain. Depending on its location and strength, a tropical cyclone is referred to by names such as hurricane (/ˈhʌrᵻkən/ or /ˈhʌrᵻkeɪn/), typhoon/taɪˈfuːn/, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical depression, and simply cyclone.
Tropical cyclones typically form over large bodies of relatively warm water. They derive their energy through the evaporation of water from the ocean surface, which ultimately recondenses into clouds and rain when moist air rises and cools to saturation. This energy source differs from that of mid-latitude cyclonic storms, such as nor'easters and European windstorms, which are fueled primarily by horizontal temperature contrasts. The strong rotating winds of a tropical cyclone are a result of the conservation of angular momentum imparted by the Earth's rotation as air flows inwards toward the axis of rotation. As a result, they rarely form within 5° of the equator. Tropical cyclones are typically between 100 and 2,000km (62 and 1,243mi) in diameter.
Tropical Depression was a Filipinoreggae band formed in 1990 by vocalist Dominic "Papadom" Gamboa (1965-2013), guitarist Lito Crisostomo, bassist Pexx Holigores, keyboardist TJ Espinola and Mike Llacar and drummer and back-up vocalist Lala Lejeune. The group disbanded in 2013 following the death of original lead vocalist Papadom Gamboa. Gamboa died a day before his 48th birthday. The wake of his burial was held private as per his family's request. The cause of death was said to be due to kidney failure.
The band was one of the several bands who spearheaded the 1990s Pinoy rock explosion and popularized the songs Kapayapaan, Bilog Na Naman Ang Buwan and Alaala.
Tropical Depression Nine was a weak tropical depression that developed and dissipated in the eastern Caribbean Sea in August 2003. It formed from a tropical wave on August 21 to the south of Puerto Rico, and was initially forecast to strengthen to tropical storm status, due to the favorable conditions for development in the area. However, wind shear developed over the system, and the depression degenerated to a tropical wave on August 22. The system produced moderate to heavy rainfall throughout its path. In Puerto Rico, the rains flooded tenhouses, while in the Dominican Republic the precipitation led to overflown rivers and two injuries.
Meteorological history
A strong tropical wave exited the coast of Africa on August 14, moved westward as a disorganized system, and passed through the Cape Verde islands on August 15. On August 17, a weak area of low pressure developed in the system about 750miles (1,200km) west-southwest of the Cape Verde islands. Convection increased over the western portion of the wave axis, and the system began to become better organized on August 18 while located about 1,250miles (2,000km) east of the Lesser Antilles. However, convection around the system diminished on August 19, and later that day it began to move through the Lesser Antilles. Despite favorable upper-level winds and falling atmospheric pressures, there were initially no signs of a circulation at the surface. Convection again increased early on August 20, and it gradually became better organized. Based on a ship's wind report of the system, it is estimated the wave developed into Tropical Depression Nine on August 21 while located about 260miles (415km) south of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
