During the extremely active windstorm season of 2019-20, multiple significant windstorms were witnessed. One of them is Dennis. This windstorm originated from a small mesoscale convective over the midwestern states of the US. The system was named by MetOffice (UK) on February 11 due to extremely large model support for a potentially dangerous windstorm affecting the country. This happened almost a full week before the storm peaked in intensity near Iceland.
The system rapidly developed over the eastern US, causing blizzard conditions before undergoing extremely rapid strengthening over the open Atlantic. Strengthening from a Moderate Windstorm to a Severe Windstorm in a time span of fewer than 24 hours.

Walkin' in the Wind: People blown over in streets as Storm Ivar hits Norway | euronews 🇬🇧
People christmas shopping in downtown Aalesund had troubles crossing the street today. The storm "Ivar" was blowing things and people around and police had to assist people in moving around.
One man blew off the sidewalk and into the street in an intersection downtown Aalesund earlier. An ambulance was required and the police is now present in the streets, to follow the development and help out where needed.
The storm is continuing towards Trondelag where 20 000 people now have lost power, and buses and boats are suspended. The police are also urging people to stay away from the downtown area in Trondheim.

Storm Alex, rated as a Severe Windstorm along the RGWSS, Force Thirteen EU's windstorm scale. It brought large amounts of flooding to many areas across France and the United Kingdom. Winds of up to 115mph were recorded, with a gust of 116mph recorded in Belle-Île, France.
Storm Alex claimed 16 lives, and was a stark reminder of the damage and danger some windstorms can cause.

Over this weekend European wind storms have again been headline news.
Following in the path of Abigail, Barney and Clodagh, Desmond has caused significant destruction across Cumbria and the Borders.
However, a recent survey carried out by Post and the Met Office saw European windstorms ranked behind flood as a factor in assessing natural hazards. Only 27% of respondents considered it ‘very important', compared to 63% for flood.
So why is this? How do insurance companies currently assess this peril? And how is this evolving.
These were among the subjects discussed in this docu-video featuring a number of key representatives from Aon Benfield, Met Office, RMS, Willis and XL Catlin.

During the extremely active windstorm season of 2019-20, multiple significant windstorms were witnessed. One of them is Dennis. This windstorm originated from a small mesoscale convective over the midwestern states of the US. The system was named by MetOffice (UK) on February 11 due to extremely large model support for a potentially dangerous windstorm affecting the country. This happened almost a full week before the storm peaked in intensity near Iceland.
The system rapidly developed over the eastern US, causing blizzard conditions before undergoing extremely rapid strengthening over the open Atlantic. Strengthening from a Moderate Windstorm to a Severe Windstorm in a time span of fewer than 24 hours.
As the system strengthened it subsequently grew massively in size, spanning over almost the entire Atlantic with an estimated length of 5962 Nautical Miles. This is the same distance as the distance between Florida and mid-Sweden.
Between 13 and 15 February, multiple NOAA aircraft reconnaissance flights flew into the storm to conduct research into extratropical cyclones. On the 15th of February 2020, one of the flights that flew into the storm entered it at peak intensity. Measuring wind gusts of 120 knots (222 km/h) and an estimated sea level pressure of 923 hPa and dropping. A few hours later, the same flight measured a sea-level pressure of 921 hPa as well as incredibly powerful flight-level winds that caused dangerous turbulence for the plane. These estimates were later confirmed by surface observations in Iceland, with one of them measuring an estimated sea-level pressure of 919 hPa. However, this was the only estimate supportive of it. Meaning that the storm peaked with a pressure of 920 hPa.
Windstorm Dennis severely affected Iceland and Ireland as well as Greenland. These areas experienced hurricane-force hour averaged winds. As the system occurred not even a week after windstorm Ciara ravaged the islands, many were not prepared or lost most if not all of their progress on repairs. The extreme amounts of rainfall led to multiple floods in the United Kingdom, bringing further misery to those heavily impacted by windstorm Ciara. In the Benelux, strong wind gusts affected the countries, prompting national meteorological institutes to issue wind warnings. The Netherlands experienced a moderate storm surge of around one meter alongside the strong wind gusts. A Code Yellow was issued by KNMI for strong wind gusts. Advising people not to go outside.
Windstorm Dennis also subsequently brought an end to the already warmer than normal winter in Central Europe, with temperatures rarely dropping below zero degrees centigrade on the coldest days.

You don't have to live far inland to avoid hurricanes. Just move to Europe. It rarely sees full-on hurricanes. But that may soon change. Following is a transcript of the video.
Europe hasn't had a hurricane reach its shore in over 50 years. Now don't get the wrong idea. Hurricane season still brings a hefty dose of wind and rain. But Europe has something that North America doesn't, when it comes to protection against hurricanes. Location.
Hurricanes usually form off the coast of West Africa, where warm water near the Equator and high humidity create columns of rapidly rising rotating air. It's the perfect recipe for a storm. Now the more warm, moist air that the system picks up, the stronger it becomes. That's why a tropical storms can quickly grow into a full on hurricane as it marches across the Atlantic. Now normally hurricanes are propelled on a westward track by the trade winds, caused by the Earth's rotation. That's why Europe as well as the West Coast of the US, rarely experience full on hurricanes. But that's not the whole story.
After all, since the year 2000, remnants of around 30 hurricanes have reached Europe. For comparison, Florida has seen 79 real hurricanes over the same time frame. By the time these remnants make landfall, they've went from a hurricane force, to a tropical storm or weaker. And that's where Europe's location comes into play. In order for a hurricane to head towards Europe, something crucial has to happen. It has to travel really far North by about 200 miles. Once a storm system reaches 30 degrees north, it encounters the subtropical jet stream. Which moves in the opposite direction of the trade winds. And therefore, blows the storm East But because the storm is now farther North, the waters underneath are colder by up to about five to 10 degrees Celsius. Which means less energy available to feed the storm. And as a result, it starts to die down by the time it's headed for Europe. Even though it's no longer a hurricane, it still packs a punch when it hits shore. In fact, most of these hurricane remnants will combine with other nearby cyclones and weather fronts, that create high winds and rain that mainly hit Ireland and Great Britain. But have been known to reach as far as Greece or even farther in Northern Russia. Typical damages include power outages, flooding, and occasionally casualties. Most recently the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia made landfall in Ireland and Scotland in 2017. About 50,000 households in Northern Ireland lost power. Three deaths were reported and downed trees closed many of the public roads and highways. This was the worst storm that Ireland had seen in 50 years. And it may be a sign of what's to come.
As global surface temperatures rise, it will also increase the sea surface temperatures in the Northern Atlantic. Which researchers estimate could contribute to an increase in the number of hurricane force storms that reach Europe. Some experts predict that by the end of the 21st century, Europe could experience, on average, 13 powerful storms each year during hurricane season. Compared to the two per year it sees now.

Hurricanes usually form off the coast of West Africa, where warm water near the Equator and high humidity create columns of rapidly rising rotating air. It's the perfect recipe for a storm. Now the more warm, moist air that the system picks up, the stronger it becomes. That's why a tropical storms can quickly grow into a full on hurricane as it marches across the Atlantic. Now normally hurricanes are propelled on a westward track by the trade winds, caused by the Earth's rotation. That's why Europe as well as the West Coast of the US, rarely experience full on hurricanes. But that's not the whole story.
After all, since the year 2000, remnants of around 30 hurricanes have reached Europe. For comparison, Florida has seen 79 real hurricanes over the same time frame. By the time these remnants make landfall, they've went from a hurricane force, to a tropical storm or weaker. And that's where Europe's location comes into play. In order for a hurricane to head towards Europe, something crucial has to happen. It has to travel really far North by about 200 miles. Once a storm system reaches 30 degrees north, it encounters the subtropical jet stream. Which moves in the opposite direction of the trade winds. And therefore, blows the storm East But because the storm is now farther North, the waters underneath are colder by up to about five to 10 degrees Celsius. Which means less energy available to feed the storm. And as a result, it starts to die down by the time it's headed for Europe. Even though it's no longer a hurricane, it still packs a punch when it hits shore. In fact, most of these hurricane remnants will combine with other nearby cyclones and weather fronts, that create high winds and rain that mainly hit Ireland and Great Britain. But have been known to reach as far as Greece or even farther in Northern Russia. Typical damages include power outages, flooding, and occasionally casualties. Most recently the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia made landfall in Ireland and Scotland in 2017. About 50,000 households in Northern Ireland lost power. Three deaths were reported and downed trees closed many of the public roads and highways. This was the worst storm that Ireland had seen in 50 years. And it may be a sign of what's to come.
As global surface temperatures rise, it will also increase the sea surface temperatures in the Northern Atlantic. Which researchers estimate could contribute to an increase in the number of hurricane force storms that reach Europe. Some experts predict that by the end of the 21st century, Europe could experience, on average, 13 powerful storms each year during hurricane season. Compared to the two per year it sees now.

However, a recent survey carried out by Post and the Met Office saw European windstorms ranked behind flood as a factor in assessing natural hazards. Only 27% of respondents considered it ‘very important', compared to 63% for flood.
So why is this? How do insurance companies currently assess this peril? And how is this evolving.
These were among the subjects discussed in this docu-video featuring a number of key representatives from Aon Benfield, Met Office, RMS, Willis and XL Catlin.
