Timothy Michael "Tim" Kaine (born February 26, 1958) is an American politician currently serving as the junior United States Senator from Virginia. A member of the Democratic Party, Kaine was first elected to the Senate in 2012.
As all Virginia governors are limited to one consecutive term, Kaine declared his candidacy for Governor of Virginia in 2005, in a bid to replace Mark Warner. Kaine won in an uncontested Democratic primary, and faced RepublicanAttorney GeneralJerry Kilgore in the general election; Kaine won with 51% of the vote, to Kilgore's 46%. Kaine served as Governor from 2006 to 2010. Upon becoming Governor, Kaine gave the Democratic response to the 2006 State of the Union Address. He was considered a top contender for running mate in Senator Barack Obama's successful 2008 presidential campaign, but instead became the 51st Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, serving from 2009 to 2011.
"Look back to 2001, ... President Bush was at his all-time high, it was just after Sept. 11, and Virginia elected a Democratic governor."
"I was the legal counsel in the effort to amend the Virginia Constitution to give Virginians the right to hunt and fish constitutionally, and we are one of the few states in the country to protect that right."
"We spend at least $5 for remedial education right now for every dollar we put in early childhood education. All the studies on early childhood education show this is going to pay for itself."
"I am focusing on things where we can build on this management tradition that we have, advance smart priorities and do so in ways that save us money on the back end."
"I feel the momentum is going the right way. Virginians have been happy with what Mark and I have done. They don't want to do a U-turn and that's really helping me."
"I think he realizes that if he has to stand up and (answer) that, folks aren't going to like the answers he gives."
"It wasn't close a few months ago."
"God grants life, and God should take it away. [Do] horrible, heinous things deserve incredible punishment? You bet."
"We can't just tax and pave our way out of traffic. I'll give your community more power to stop out-of-control development that increases traffic."
"Often, money is taken out of that fund for other projects. I'll make sure that stops."
