Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery - VATS
Video-assisted thoracic surgery, or VATS, is a minimally invasive lung treatment now offered at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Jason Shaw, Director of Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery, explains this groundbreaking technique and the benefits to patients undergoing surgery.
With this innovative approach, a small videoscope (thoracoscope) is inserted into the patient's chest cavity via a port created by three small incisions. The videoscope transmits images of the lung onto a computer monitor, allowing the surgical team to view the operative area. It is particularly useful when performing a lobectomy or lung biopsy.

Cardiothoracic Surgery is an awesome specialty. There’s a high degree of prestige that comes with it, as well as a level of precision, detail, and technical skills needed that I love; like operating the da Vinci. That being said, it wasn't for me. Choosing a specialty is one of the most important decisions you'll make during medical school and everyone has their own reasons for choosing the specialty that they do. Here’s what I liked about cardiothoracic surgery, what I didn't like, and why I ultimately chose not to specialize in it.

Hi, I'm Christopher Scott. I'm a thoracic surgeon in the Department of Surgery here at University of Virginia. As a thoracic surgeon, I have the unique opportunity to see patients that have both benign and malignant processes, mostly of the chest and upper abdomen. This would include disease processes like lung cancers, and esophageal cancers, and cancers of the chest wall. In addition, I see a multitude of benign disease processes. This includes things like gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD.
The areas that I've really focused a lot on and specialized in within my field of thoracic surgery, the first would be robotic minimally-invasive surgery. I was very fortunate early on in my career to gain the knowledge and expertise in this particular technique.
But I think the second area that is a little bit unique for most thoracic surgeons is my interest in a disease called chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. Here at UVA, we've been very fortunate to have the collective expertise and interest to form our multidisciplinary team here and to offer this surgery for patients.
When we see a new patient at UVA in our clinic, we will explore every possibility, we will have an honest discussion about what the options are, and then together, we'll make a decision about what the best recommendation is for each patient.
