Through their wealthy planter father, LeRoy Pope, the sisters were related to the English poet Alexander Pope.
Thomas George Percy managed the affairs for his friend John Walker while he was away in Washington, D.C.. Percy stayed in Huntsville, enjoying his large library and extended family.
He and Maria named their eldest son John Walker, after his boon companion. Their second son, Charles Brown, was named after a third friend in Huntsville, Samual Brown, a distinguished physician who had studied medicine at Edinburgh. Early life
George Percy was born in England, the youngest son of Henry Percy, 2nd/8th Earl of Northumberland and Lady Catherine Neville. He was sickly for much of his life, possibly suffering from epilepsy or severe asthma. He graduated from Oxford University in 1597. While at university, he gained admission to Gloucester Hall and the Middle Temple.
Percy was part of the first group of 105 English colonists to settle the Jamestown Colony. He departed England in December 1606 and kept a journal of his voyage. He arrived in Virginia in April 1607 and recorded the struggles of the colonists to cope with the American environment, disease, and the Powhatan Native Americans. "Thus we lived for the space of five months in this miserable distress," he wrote in his journal, "not having five able men to man our bulwarks upon any occasion."

Union General George Thomas has been overshadowed by some of the more prominent Civil War generals, like Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, William T. Sherman, and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. However, he was an incredible commander and an even more amazing person. He started out being a slave owner but would end up fighting for African American Civil Rights. The Civil War became a catalyst for the change in his way of thinking and demonstrates that historical characters are not static. They change over time.
