Electoral district of Lismore

Lismore is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is represented by Thomas George of the The Nationals.

The electoral includes all of the City of Lismore (including Lismore, Nimbin, Dunoon and Clunes), much of inland Tweed Shire (including Murwillumbah, Tyalgum and Uki), all of Kyogle Council (including Kyogle, Bonalbo, Tabulam and Woodenbong) and all of Tenterfield Shire.

History

Lismore was first created with the end of multi-member districts in 1894, when it was split from Richmond. In 1904, it was abolished with the reduction in the size of the Legislative Assembly, after Federation. In 1913, Lismore was recreated, replacing Richmond. With the introduction of proportional representation in 1920, Lismore and Clarence were absorbed into Byron. With the end of proportional representation in 1927, Lismore and Clarence were recreated.

Electoral district

An electoral district (also known as a constituency, riding, ward, division, electoral area or electorate) is a territorial subdivision for electing members to a legislative body. Generally, only voters (constituents) who reside within the district are permitted to vote in an election held there. From a single district, a single member or multiple members might be chosen. Members might be chosen by a first past the post system or a proportional representative system, or another method entirely. Members might be chosen through an election with universal suffrage or an indirect election, or some other method.

Terminology

Electoral district (Canada)

An electoral district in Canada, also known as a "constituency" or a "riding", is a geographical constituency upon which Canada's representative democracy is based. It is officially known in Canadian French as a circonscription, but frequently called a comté (county).

Each federal electoral districts returns one Member of Parliament (MP) to the Canadian House of Commons; each provincial or territorial electoral district returns one representative — called, depending on the province or territory, Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), Member of the National Assembly (MNA), Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) or Member of the House of Assembly (MHA) — to the provincial or territorial legislature.

While electoral districts in Canada are now exclusively single-member districts, multiple-member districts have been used at the federal and provincial levels. Alberta has had a few districts that returned from two to seven members: see Calgary, Edmonton and Medicine Hat. British Columbia had a mix of multiple-member districts in Vancouver and single-member districts elsewhere until the 1991 election, and Prince Edward Island had dual-member districts until the 1996 election.

The 2019 federal election is underway and all parties have launched campaigns in their drive to be the next government of Canada. Parliament was dissolved on Sept. 11, which gave the Liberals, the Conservatives, the NDP, the Greens, and the Bloc Quebecois 40 days to try to convince voters they are the right choice. During elections, we always hear about which ridings we should be watching, or which ones are likely to vote for certain parties. Why some Americans’ votes count more than others. Become a Vox member: https://www.vox.com/support-now In the 2000 US presidential election, the Democratic candidate got half a million more votes than the Republican. The Democrat lost. Sixteen years later the same thing happened again. In the US, if you run for president, it does not actually matter how many people in the country vote for you. What matters instead is an arcane system for selecting America’s head of state called the Electoral College. The Electoral College is the reason the US has something called “swing states,” and it’s the reason those places get to decide the future of the country. It’s the reason presidential candidates almost never campaign in the country’s biggest cities. And more recently, it’s also the reason th...

국회, 광역의원 증원·선거구 획정 법안 '지각 처리' On June 13th Koreans will head to the polls for local elections. And better late than never,... rival lawmakers managed to pass a re-districting bill on Monday... the 100 day countdown to polling day. Given this is the first election to be held since President Moon Jae-in took power last year,... watchers say the June election will be a barometer of the administration's popularity. Kim Min-ji reports. The National Assembly on Monday passed a long overdue redistricting bill for the June 13th local elections. By law, the electoral map has to be finalized six months prior to the election -- meaning December 13th last year -- but political wrangling kept lawmakers from having the bill ready on time. The new map adds a combined 27 more positions for city and provincial councilors -- except for Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and the administrative city of Sejong -- for a total of 690 posts. As for council members -- there will be 29 more posts for a nationwide total of 2,927. That's more than 3,600 positions up for grabs,... not counting the key posts of mayor, governor and education superintendent in 17 cities and provinces. A mini general election is also in the works... as about 10 parliamentary seats are going to be vacant -- with some lawmakers giving up their posts to run for local office plus some who have been stripped of their position. "With just three months left, the priorities of the rival parties will be to field the best possible candidates in hopes of at least keeping the posts they have now -- or if they're lucky, adding new ones. On top of that, it's the first nationwide poll under the Moon Jae-in administration -- meaning the results will be a barometer of how the public assesses the young government." Preliminary registration is open for candidates running for mayor, district office chief, education superintendent and local councilor. Registration for county council members will start in April. Once registered,... candidates can start campaigning,... open their election offices,... and start sending material to voters in their constituencies. Kim Min-ji, Arirang News. And more recently, it’s also the reason that Republican candidates have been able to eke out victories in the presidential election without actually getting the most votes. The Electoral College makes some Americans’ votes more powerful than others. In fact, that’s part of the reason we have it to begin with; in the country’s early years, the Electoral College helped give the votes of Southern Whites more weight than the votes of Northerners. The idea at its core, that certain votes simply matter more than others, is baked into the American tradition. In our elections, it decides the winner. Further reading: The historian Alexander Keyssar’s book “Why Do We Still Have the Electoral College?” takes you through the history and function of the Electoral College: https://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674660151 For the bite-sized version of that history, Keyssar also wrote this piece in the New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/03/opinion/electoral-college-racism-white-supremacy.html The Times also had a great interactive feature on where the 2020 candidates actually spent money: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/10/17/us/politics/trump-biden-campaign-ad-spending.html Pew has a breakdown of how democracies around the world elect their head of state, which really shows what an oddball the US is: https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2016/11/22/among-democracies-u-s-stands-out-in-how-it-chooses-its-head-of-state/ More on why today’s Electoral College gives Republican presidential candidates a structural advantage: https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/9/17/20868790/republicans-lose-popular-vote-win-electoral-college Vox.com is a news website that helps you cut through the noise and understand what's really driving the events in the headlines. • Canada election: How are federal electoral districts determined?

The 2019 federal election is underway and all parties have launched campaigns in their drive to be the next government of Canada. Parliament was dissolved on Sept. 11, which gave the Liberals, the Conservatives, the NDP, the Greens, and the Bloc Quebecois 40 days to try to convince voters they are the right choice. During elections, we always hear about which ridings we should be watching, or which ones are likely to vote for certain parties. Canada's federal electoral map is being redrawn later this year, which will increase the number of seats from 338 to 343, while updating the boundaries of more than 270 existing ridings. This update happens once per decade following each census, and the process is overseen by independent, non-partisan commissions. David Akin breaks down some of the updates coming, and why the changes aren't popular with everyone. An electoral district association has to fill certain positions before applying for registration. It must appoint: a chief executive officer, a financial agent and an auditor. The registered association may also appoint electoral district agents to perform certain financial tasks. In this module, we focus on the financial agent, electoral district agents and auditor, because they are the ones performing financial tasks. Let’s take a closer look at the financial agent. A registered association can have only one financial agent at a time. The financial agent is responsible for administering the association’s financial transactions and for reporting them as required by the Canada Elections Act. To ensure proper financial administration, the registered association should open a bank account to be used exclusively for the association’s finances. All monetary transactions should go through the bank account. The financial agent and authorized electoral district agents can have signing authority to manage the account. Let’s look closer at the electoral district agents. The registered association may appoint any number of electoral district agents to help the financial agent perform various financial tasks. When informing Elections Canada about new electoral district agents, the registered association has to specify the terms and conditions of each appointment. Now let’s discuss the main responsibilities of the financial agent and authorized electoral district agents. They can accept contributions or loans on behalf of the registered association and they can issue receipts for contributions. Note, however, that the registered association must obtain written authorization from the party leader before issuing tax receipts. As well, the financial agent and authorized electoral district agents can incur or pay the registered association’s expenses. But keep in mind that only the financial agent can do the following: • transfer money, property or services to another entity or accept a transfer, and • prepare and submit the association’s financial return. Finally, let’s look at the role and responsibilities of the auditor. While the registered association can have only one auditor, the same person can be the auditor for more than one registered association. If, in a fiscal period, the registered association receives contributions totaling $10,000 or more, or incurs expenses totaling $10,000 or more, the auditor examines the association’s financial records and prepares a report stating the auditor’s opinion as to whether the association’s financial return presents fairly the information contained in the financial records on which it is based. To learn more, please take a look at our other modules and resources. ***** Elections Canada is an independent, non-partisan agency that reports directly to Parliament.
