The Well is a Miles Franklin Award winning novel by Australian author Elizabeth Jolley. It tells the story of two women, Hester and her young ward Katherine, and their relationship with one another. Hester, who has lived alone on a farm with her father for many years, is possessive of the much younger Katherine. The relationship between the two women becomes strained after an incident where Katherine hits a mysterious creature with the roo bar on their four-wheel drive. It is left unclear whether the creature is an animal or an intruder who has stolen a large sum of money from the house. When Katherine begins to hear voices from the well and becomes racked with guilt, Hester goes to extreme measures to maintain her influence over her young ward.
The Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link, normally shortened to The WELL, is one of the oldest virtual communities in continuous operation. As of June 2012, it had 2,693 members. It is best known for its Internet forums, but also provides email, shell accounts, and web pages. The discussion and topics on The WELL range from deeply serious to trivial, depending on the nature and interests of the participants.
History
The WELL was started by Stewart Brand and Larry Brilliant in 1985, and the name is partially a reference to some of Brand's earlier projects, including the Whole Earth Catalog. The WELL began as a dial-upbulletin board system (BBS) influenced by EIES, became one of the original dial-up ISPs in the early 1990s when commercial traffic was first allowed, and changed into its current form as the Internet and web technology evolved. Its original management team—Matthew McClure, soon joined by Cliff Figallo and John Coate—collaborated with its early users to foster a sense of virtual community.

Don’t talk about this novel
The first rule about this book is to not talk about this book and the second rule about this book is to not talk about this book.
Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk is a super original novel—and its themes will probably always be relevant. The David Fincher film adaptation starring Helena Bonham Carter, Ed Norton, and Brad Pitt is really well done.

Apparently James Douglas of the Sunday Express newspaper thought that the rest of the country should follow his own ant-lesbian views and campaign for Radclyffe Halls' fifth novel THE WELL OF LONELINESS to be banned. Thankfully, most media was actually okay with it, and didn't see the harm (what harm?!) - notable figures such as Virginia Woolf actually campaigned for it to remain within public consumption - but court overruled, and so the novel was banned in the United Kingdom shortly after its publication by Jonathan Cape in 1928 until after Hall's death in 1943.
Okay, so things were different back then. I dare say we still have a long way to go until lesbianism and homosexuality in general is accepted without any passing comment at all. However, it's still outrageous that one's artwork - which has been so beautifully penned to express the conflicted yet honest emotions of Stephen from her childhood to adulthood as she grows to discover her love for the same sex - could ever be considered anything other than worthy of merit.
Still, it was available in Paris still, where the novel is partly set; if nothing else, that simply highlights just how behind the UK was with its out look in the middle of the twentieth century. Have things improved since then? I don't know.
Whether you're interested in lesbian fiction, keen to delve into works of literary and historical note, or just wish for an enjoyable read, then THE WELL OF LONELINESS is one for which to reach.
